Good books on the history of the Bible? Origins, translations, alterations
by somebodylovesme ini'm looking for good scholarly books that address the bible's history -- its origins, translations, alterations, suppressions ... in other words, the history the elders never told you.
;) i'm not a religious person (i would probably be classified as a weak atheist if i cared much about classifications), but i am very fascinated by religion and would like to expand my own historical knowledge.
bonus points for any books that address the similarities between judaism/christianity and zoroastrianism.

oklahoma city -- oklahoma's senate judiciary committee has approved a bill that would give juries the option to sentence repeat child molesters to life without parole or even death.

Personal views aside, I don't think that law would last; the state's courts (and up to the US Supreme Court) should and would strike it down. Coker v. Georgia (1977) held that the death penalty cannot be imposed for any crime other than murder. That particular case offered the death penalty as punishment for rape, and that was found to be Unconstitutional.
/just my two cents. :)

JW Pseudo-Vegetarians
by kristyann inwe don't talk to them anymore, but a couple of years ago when we did, my boyfriend's jw mom and sisters all of a sudden decided that they were "vegetarians.
" they decided it was wrong to eat jehovah's animals, and plus, they said it was "healthier" anyway.
i found this to be pretty ridiculous for a few reasons.. one, they were not really vegetarians.

I'm a vegetarian, and my JW mother-in-law just can't wrap her head around it. She constantly tries to serve me chicken and fish ... sometimes even beef ... usually saying, "Well, you'll eat some meat, won't you?"
The best was when she said, "Well, I know some vegetarians who eat chicken and fish!"
- to which I said, "Yes. They're called meat-eaters."
*shrugs* I just don't like meat.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF CHILD BEAUTY PAGENTS?
by Mary ini was watching dr. phil yesterday and they had these women on there who have their daughters entered in beauty pagent contests looking like miniture hookers.
i was stunned when i saw pictures of the one 8 year old girl: more make-up than tammy faye baker, hair pieces, false teeth, fake tan and totally slutty outfits.
she looked like a plastic barbie.

Just to throw in a personal experience ... (note that I was never a Witness)
When I was a kid, I didn't do pageants -- but I did dance, baton, and modeling, which is a lot of the same stuff. Make-up, "flirty" dance moves and poses, very short and shiny skirts, hours spent on hair (I got a perm twice a year from the age of 7 until the age of 11) ... all of that stuff. It wasn't quite as obsessive as pageantry is, but my dance teacher was a pageant mom. Her little girl was a national beauty queen and actually ran in the same circle as JonBenet Ramsey.
Hours in the car to go to a fashion show ... missing the occasional school day to go be in a magazine ad ... practice sessions every day after school ... until I hit adolescence and wasn't skinny and beautiful anymore, and then it all sort of went away. I focused on school instead and, if I may say, did just fine for myself.
The end result? Actually, when I watch these documentaries about pageants, I see a lot of my childhood in them, and all I remember is how much fun it was. I LOVED doing it. I loved being on stage, I loved dancing and twirling my baton, I loved putting on make-up and getting pretty outfits and listening to the audience applaud. I think if the KID -- not just the parent -- truly loves doing it, then so be it. There has to be balance, though. I knew growing up that brains were important, that this was just a game for fun, and hey, it put some money in my college account, which I subsequently used.
The little girl who was the national beauty queen is now a very ordinary adolescent who's outgrown pageants and is instead focused on school and going to college. She seems pretty normal.
Can it be extreme? Yeah. Does it go too far? Yeah. Do some parents pursue it for the wrong reasons? Heck, yes.
Should childhood pageants, modeling, dancing, et cetera, be banned? I personally don't think so. I would compare those obsessive pageant moms to the obsessive soccer moms I see down the street, screaming about how hard their kid can kick. I could complain about the cheerleading moms and the violin moms and the theatre moms and the equestrian moms ...
All of it is about balance and making sure a kid has a hobby because THEY want it, not because their parent does.

JW Children, Holidays, and Memories
by somebodylovesme inmy husband and i were walking through the store today and we passed a display of valentines -- you know, the kind that school kids buy and exchange in the classroom.
i paused and glanced them over, remembering how much i used to love holidays at school.
(husband is an inactive/faded jw; i was never one.

'my parents don't just wait for one day a year to give me presents -- everyday is like christmas
Another ex-Witness friend of mine used to say that. The problem, I later learned, was that "every day being like Christmas" really meant that no day was like Christmas, and there were rarely, if ever, presents or celebrations or happy times at all.
Heart-breaking.

The
teacher had none, but later asked Lesley to come to her house to answer
some questions she had- condition: No adults. Lesley studied with her
teacher for a year.... Oh, yes, let's encourage our twelve-year-olds to go to strangers' houses alone without adults. I realize this story takes place in a culture different than our (or at least, my) own, but that statement just struck me oddly.

Wow. All of these stories ... the collective experiences ... have just brought tears to my eyes.
No kid giving a Valentine cares about how it might have come from a different tradition two millenia ago. It's about taking a moment to create or give something to your friends, to think about each person individually, and as we get older, to take a few extra minutes to turn that love we feel into a little tangible reminder. I'll never understand what's wrong with that.
Thanks for sharing, everyone.
