Would you marry not for love but for a visa?

a friend of mine was approached by a asian family living here in the u.s. that wants to get a family member, a 18 year girl living in the south east asia region here to america.

they want my friend to get married to this girl for a year or two so she can eventually become an american citizen.

the family living here has offered to pay for all expenses; my friends air ticket over there and back along with any other expenses incurred plus a lump sum payment upon her successful immigration here to the u.s. my friend is maybe considering it but he hasn't even seen a picture of the girl yet and he is somewhat older(about 9 year difference) than the girl.. now if they fall in love or consemate the relationship, that's totally up in the air and i guess open to bargaining and my friend would totally be free to get a divorce once the girl gets to the u.s. i did ask some of my friends what they thought, and everyone pretty much said no.

ok, so many of us thought we would one day soon be on easy steet.

the new system would be here, no more problems, health or financial.

we would all have our own house and life would be bliss.

Ok, so many of us thought we would one day soon be on easy steet. The new system would be here, no more problems, health or financial. We would all have our own house and life would be bliss. So, we were off and the reality is that life will always pretty much suck. Somewhat disillusioned with the future, I still however look for ways I can enjoy my life to the fullest and not have to work for the rest of my life.

I'm currently going to college but the process is so slow. I love the learning aspect of school but I still have another 3 years before I have a regular job and I will still be working lots of hours. Thus, I wish there was a way I could retire now, at age 24. I don't really want to do very much, kinda of like the guy in Office Space, you know just relax, watch T.V., hang out. I then began to think that if I worked really hard for the next 2 years, sold my house, and liquidated everything I had, I could then move abroad. I would move to a poorer country like Peru or Vietnam, buy a house and live off the interest that my savings would accrue. I figure that in a country like Peru, I would only need like $5000 a year or less to live comfortably. Is this a crazy idea or am I just completely disillusioned?

Had the 'talk' w/ my dad last night.....

if y'all remember, i posted a couple of days ago that i'd had the 'talk' w/ my mom and it went really well.

well, at her request, i had the 'talk' w/ my dad.

mind you, he's been in the truth since the mid-50's, elder, pioneer, etc, etc.

How I defeat the JW's

well, yesterday sure was interesting.

i had my jw parents over to my house for a party along with my mom's jw sister.

there was a steet festival going on in my town called jubillee day so my wife and i invited friends from work and some relatives on her side of the family as well.

Well, yesterday sure was interesting. I had my JW parents over to my house for a party along with my mom's JW sister. There was a steet festival going on in my town called Jubillee Day so my wife and I invited friends from work and some relatives on her side of the family as well. One of the friends I decided to invite was a DF'd girl from my old KH who now lives in the area. She was DF'd like two years ago for apostasy and my dad was one of the elders on the Judicial Committee that DF'd her. So, it was exciting to watch, my JW parents and this DF'd girl along with other worldly people all in my house congregating together, I loved it. Hey, and the DF'd girl and my parents actually talked together and were cordial.

In addition, when we walked through the street festival with my parents, we stopped at a John Kerry booth, got a bumper sticker, my parents didn't say a word. On the way back to the house, my wife and I stopped and took a tour through a new Non-Denominational church (we just wanted to see how they had fixed up the old church), my parents didn't say a word.

How is this possible? I possess the ultimate bargaining chip, my 2 year old son. Is this right or just what has to be done in order to level the playing field?

i have been what?s known on this site as a lurker for the past 2 plus years.. however, i could not resist the opportunity to solicit your feedback on an e-mail i received from a co-worker who is a j-dub.. i no longer consider myself one, although i was in the org.

How many of you gave up a college scholarship?

how many of you gave up a college scholarship to appear "spiritual"?

jt's thread about "homegrown lawyers" and the wtbs willingly sending certain ones to college started me thinking about that question.

i know i for one, relinquished that scholarship to show how "spiritual" i was at 18. .

Actally, it was because of the WT that I've gotten scholarships and grants. In a twisted ironic fate, delaying school has given me a free ride. Since I'm now married with a child I'm considered an independent student. I filled out my FAFSA 2 years ago and I've been going to school for free ever since. Now, I'm almost 25 and I have about 2.5 years to go but just because tuition is free does not justify the fact that I did put off going to college when I was younger.

I would rather be $40K in debt and have my good job now than struggling full time to support my family and going to college at the same time. Plus, I missed the whole living on campus wild party scene, bums me out.

WTBS attitude towards vegetarians ...

having flirted with meat off and on through my life, but mostly conforming to the vegetarian standard (due to the obscenity for the most part that is the meat industry) - i noticed when serving with the society, that i came under fire from the brothers.. my moral arguments about cutting down on meat consumption based around the factory farming methods were cast aside and often sneered at.. "well god gave us the right to eat meat" was the usual line i had to swallow down.. have any of you guys faced the same situation?

I was a vegetarian JW for awhile and many in the congregation thought it was a good idea, you know me, just getting ready for the new system. However, I think the main reason there aren't many JW vegetarians is time and then money. It takes more time to plan out a vegetarian diet and some time more money to buy the food that is required. Those are two luxuries you usually don't have as a JW, plus Jeh. is going to fix everything in the near future, so why bother. Eat that steak for tomorrow it will all be over

Just As A Matter Of Curiosity..........

just as a matter of curiosity i was wondering if any of you know of anybody who has read raymond franz' 'crisis of conscience' and who actually remained a jw?

i have sent and lent this book to a number of people within the wts, even a co, all of whom left eventually.

one person remained due to domestic issues, but resigned from all his duties and remains as such.

Having read C of C and other books like it, I can say it may help but I don't think any book can change your attitude or mind for that matter. For me, change came from within, that which made me leave in the first place before knowing anything, UN, new light, etc. I just knew the JW thing wasn't right and C of C only helped me confirm my doubts.
