it's a written argument a non-party to a legal controversy files when that non-party nonetheless will be affected by the outcome of the court's decision - filing one requires special permission from the reviewing appellate court

jimmy swaggert - gasp!
by seesthesky inwhy do ex-jws/jws get so disturbed by the fact that the wts filed an amicus brief in the swaggert case?
do you suppose those miffed by that fact do not know how the filing of an amicus brief works and its purpose?

Where are JW's most vulnerable?
by PopeOfEruke inwhat's the more effective method to try to open the dormant organ most jw's have as a brain?
is it tackling them on biblical issues and inconsistencies, for instance the "great crowd" dilemma from revelation, or the isaiah "new world" problem recently posted by leolaia?
is it the blood issue, either based on a scriptural attack or else a humanistic "value-of-life" approach?

Two types of elder?????
by chuckyy inits my experience after actually being an elder for a number of years that there are in fact...two types of elder.. type 1....genuine, actually cares about the people in the congregation and wasn't actually bothered too much if he became an elder or not.. type 2....very legalistic, cares more about organizational laws rather than people and lacks compassion and empathy.
this type is more of a spiritual policeman.
he wanted desperately to be an elder and now that he is, he loves the sense of power and prestige.. this has been my experience and if there are more type 2 elders on a body, the results can be disastrous.. what has been your experience???

on a somewhat related note - isn't there a giant leap of faith going on when we assert certainties about anything related to our mere existence - even our existence
now, that degree of skepticism could, perhaps, undermine present order and function - and, given its impracticality - i don't keep it at the forefront of my mind
but certainties seem quite absurd when they concern the distant past - hell - even certainties about the near past, e.g., the u.s. civil war, seem foolish to me

Education - How encouraging low self esteem creates better witnesses.
by BigG infunny title you might think but consider this point and apologies if i am covering old ground here...its not intentional.. i was raised by my mother who was and is a devout jw and as such until i was 20 (10 years ago) i was the same...trying my best to fit into the social environment i clearly was not made for but benefiting from good wholesome association with fellow brothers and sisters (note the sarcastic tone...make what you will of it).. althought at the time i didnt realise it but i was what others consider intelligent and quite academically able; i had a mind like a sponge and would spend hours in the jw library at the kh (which surprisingly enough contained non jw literature)...it was this that i read and would digest endlessly where i could.. one of those books (why it was there i dont know), was what i later undertood to be criminal law reports concerning cases that had gone before the courts.
my childish thirst for knowledge was intrigued...(i was then about 12).
the legal arguments i hadnt a clue what they meant but the facts surrounding these crimes were good reading.. i then knew i wanted to be a lawyer and that was what i said when an elder asked me what i wanted to do when i grew up; i mentioned trusting this man that i had read a book in the kh library and found it interesting...and that i wanted to be lawyer...i remember him smiling and saying that it was better to pioneer rather than seek a highly paid job...personally i didnt know what he meant properly but i felt a bit sad...and demotivated...i later in the week went back into the library and found the book had gone...!!.

it sucks how jwism forced some people to refrain from pursuing higher education! - isn't such force against the law or something?

Do you know of any "baptized" JW's that committed suicide or attempted?
by booker-t ini remember one of my childhood friends was found dead and the police said he committed suicide.
i just could not believe it because my friend was a "devout" jw almost franatical about it.
now years later since i have seen both sides of the coin i am beginning to wonder if my friend did indeed kill himself.

some here, but not all, have drawn or suggested the inference that jay dubyaism causes suicide - others have indicated a belief that the causes of suicide are quite complex and that the act likely results from multiple factors including even genetic predisposition - i side with this latter group - the position of the former seems illogical and myopic - any opinions on this?
p.s. if possible, please guide your responses with logic and reason only -

"Makena and Sabine's daughter is another, but I met them a couple of years afterward. That event and the aftermath is what finally took them away from the WTS. She was 21 and a regular pioneer................hers was the result of a botched elder visit."
yikes - "the result of a botched elder visit" - ?
seems like a misuse of language more than likely - the elder's visit did not actually cause the attempt, did it?
perhaps the visit was the trigger or one of many - but the actual cause? -

"Captives of a Concept" --book online
by bebu inon another thread, mj and garybuss recommended a rather new book to me, which, it turns out, is available online as a download as well as a paperback that can be shipped.
i think it is an excellent resource, and believe it could be recommended to many people, jw or ex jw, because it uses wt material and doctrines as its criteria for discerning if the wt really does have all the authority they claim.
(if you are a jw, do you know what proof you supposedly rely on that the wt is the faithful and discreet slave?
