cult marriages
by No Apologies inok, i had a thought the other day, and since that is a relatively rare event, i thought i would share it.. .
remember the moonies and their mass weddings?
i don't know enough about them to know just what the point was, or the rationale for something like this.

Remember the moonies and their mass weddings? Maybe they still have them, I don't know. I don't know enough about them to know just what the point was, or the rationale for something like this.
They do still have mass weddings but I believe Moon does them via satellite now. It cost the couples $3000 to be wed or to renew their vows by Moon. That buys Rev. Moon lots of expensive properties, Rolex watches and Mercedes Benz. My brother has been a moonie for nearly 30 years now. I went to his mass wedding at Madison Square Garden years ago where he married a German woman whom he was matched up with by Moon. I can remember he was pretty miserable for months after the wedding because they just didn't get along. He was the over-zealous, proselytizing obnoxious fanatic and she was pleasant and passive (and didn't speak much English). My family actually liked being around her more than my brother! My family background is German, thus the main reason for the match, I guess. They stayed together and eventually became friendlier towards each other. They came to some sort of an understanding but in my heart of hearts I really think my brother "made" this marriage work out because he has a tremendous ego and to admit failure would be a strike against the faith in his beliefs. I believe the reason for these marriages, at least in the Moon world, is money and loyalty. My brother and his wife (and their 2 children) have devoted their lives and salaries to the "church" and still pay enormous amounts of money to go on "spiritual guidance" seminars in other countries (mainly Korea). astro_girl

Hi Heathen!
I did not actually watch Kingdom Hospital but 2 of my girlfriends did and said it was pretty wacky. Not very scary at all. I'll give it a try. I have a high tolerance for Stephen King. One of my all time S.K. favs is the cheesy movie version of Salem's Lot with David Soul and James Mason. I liked the way Tobe Hooper directed it and the vampires were very creepy!

Hey Tal! I think Rollins will be in your neck of the woods (or at least in the same country) with his Spoken Word Tour. Here are some dates I found in case you're interested: March 22 Vancouver, BC @ Vogue Theatre, March 23 Calgary, AB @ MacEwan Hall, March 24 Edmonton, AB @ Francis Winspear Theatre and March 26 Winnipeg, MB @ Burton Cummings Theatre.
Tom Morello is a GOD!! His guitar solos, especially some of the ones on the new Audioslave CD make my knees give out...
I hear ya, joannadandy! He's positively Masterful! I had this thing for Zack myself... (now I must go slap the 1st RATM CD in the player and thump the walls down!) I do like the Audioslave CD (I liked Soundgarden mucho) especially the hypnotic "Like A Stone". Any Johnny Thunders fans out there? I used to go see him all the time at Max's Kansas City. It was a gamble on whether he'd be sober enough to perform but it always made for an entertaining evening! Astro_Girl

Hi Huxley!
Yeah, I'm feeling old these days too! My 16 year old neice has her little "punk" band buttons all pinned on her jacket (Blink 182, AFI...need I say more?!) She has absolutely no interest in listening to any bands that I suggest she add to her "punk rock playlist". Kids these days! No respect for the elders, heh-heh! The last band I really really liked was Rage Against The Machine. Not exactly for their views but mainly for that kick-ass guitar playing! I haven't been to a show in so long! I think the last show I actually went to was Iggy (still buff and put on a great show!) and I forgot what year that was (pathetic!) And now I can always hear an Iggy song on a Carnival Cruise commercial! Arrrgghhh! Oh well, he is approaching retirement age! It seems like these pseudo-punk bands get signed, promoted, labeled and packaged so fast these days they all blur together. I'm sure there are some really interesting bands out there...somewhere. Hi Heathen! Geez! This punk band thing got a bit wild there with the groupie offers! Um, I'm sure this is just a mild case of paranoia but just to set the record straight, most of the girls (myself included) were not groupies or even drank or did drugs, just music fans. Alot of us had boyfriends and went to the shows to support the bands. Many of them were our friends and a decent amount had an anti-drug and drinking stance! There were bands that contributed profits from their records to community services and gave free shows to raise money for different charities etc. It was very cool, very positive! There were of course a small percentage of groupies that would sleep around but for the most part, we were all in our teens and just having a good time. I think we looked pretty low key compared to what some of the trends and styles are today. The Beastie Boys (when they were a loud obnoxious punk band) used to open for my boyfriend's band at CBGB. The Saturday Night Live show was on Halloween 1981 and there were alot out of town bands in the city to play gigs. I was with some friends from NYC, Ohio and DC and we were meant to be the "slam dancers" (hate that term) but things got a bit out of hand, someone threw a pumpkin (that was really funny!) and some equipment was ruined. John Belushi was friends with Lee Ving from FEAR and that's how they got the spot I guess. I saw John in the green room but never got to meet him. He was acting pretty weird and looked really wasted. I do not have a scanner right now but I will try to locate some pix on the web. Astro_Girl

I always wanted a raven. There is a pet store near me that has some very neat birds like snowy owls, a rooster, tons of different varieties of parrots and this big beautiful shiny black raven named Dante. He's not for sale but I visit him as often as I can! He's very personable and likes to nibble on my rings!

My good friend used to have a Supra (I forgot the year) and he LOVED that car! I have a Mitsubishi 3000GT and I really love the way it looks. Nice curves! Now I'm attached to it and just keep shoveling money in for repairs. I always wanted a '69 Firebird. That's my dream car! Just imagine the $$ I'd have to put into that one!

Hi Huxley & Heathen! You are both super cool! I never did meet any members of The Gun Club but "Fire Of Love" was always a fav! No tattoos or piercings (unless you count my earlobes) Back then I think we tended to look more creepy. Pale skin, dark eye makeup, spiked or teased up hair (like Siouxsie). I used to wear my plaid kilt, combat boots, fishnet stockings and whatever band t-shirt was clean. I was a punker since the late 1970s when I heard those life altering bands like Wire (Pink Flag!) The Misfits (we knew the Jersey boys way back in the day), The Damned (we met Dave and the boys one night when they played NYC back in the early 80s, Dave Vanian was good friends with The Misfits and is super cool, very friendly!) Motorhead (we hung out with Philthy Phil and Lemmy when they played in New Jersey at some dive...Phil was the coolest, Lemmy had 2 sleazy broads hanging on him the whole night and this was when Brian Robertson from Thin Lizzy was in the band...he was pretty nasty and sloshed and I remember his nose was really red...but he was in Thin Lizzy so all is forgiven) The Clash, The Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers, The Stooges, New York Dolls, The Ramones (our homegrown favs!), Patti Smith...uh-oh this list could get really really long! After I saw Black Flag for the first time (I think it was around 1980 or 81) it really was an experience never to be forgotten! They were so raw, so intense and so loud! It was like they slapped you in the face with every song they played! There were some really great scenes around the country like DC: Minor Threat, Bad Brains, SOA, Boston: SSD, FUs, Gang Green, Mid-West: Necros, Meatmen, Negative Approach and even Texas had their share with the likes of the Big Boys, The Dicks, MDC and Toxic Shock! Cali of course had tons of great bands (I was on that infamous Saturday Night Live when FEAR played and brought "slam dancers" in for their act) Some of the old flyers I made back then for gigs at CBGB are in a book called "F*cked Up and Photocopied" and it's a great testament to the "do it yourself" spirit and comradery that was so prevalant back then. Those scenes were cemented by dedication, creativity and a lot of bored, frustrated kids giving society and the music industry the finger! It was my whole life back then and I have nothing but fondest memories! Thanks for listening to me ramble on! Astro_Girl

I want to contribute to the band too! I will make crude cut and paste flyers (out of real paper images, NO COMPUTER GRAPHICS!), xerox them and hand them out when you guys play New York! You all can crash on the floor of our apartment too! Here's some fond memories I'd like to share: back in the early 80s when I was a "very involved in the scene" hardcore punker, we lived in Brooklyn and we always had bands that played in the city over our place to catch up on some sleep and feed them some super thick deli sandwiches from the Italian place around the block! We put up members of Black Flag, Social Distortion, The Minutemen and that was when D.Boone was still with us, Minor Threat, SSD, GBH, Meatmen, Necros...I could go on and on (but I won't) Some of the best times I can remember were those hc gigs outside of A-7 with 15 bands on the bill and getting home at 6:00 a.m. with some very tired and sweaty rebels against society!
