Donations for Literature?

i know that there is a variety of posters here from different places.

i have seen some from canada, the u.s., and australia, and england.

so i wanted to ask about the "donation" arrangement for literature.. somebody in another thread mentioned the "double" payment thing.

I posted a link to this thread over on the site where I was discussing things with this other brother. He is from Australia and he seems to think the society doesn't make anything on their literature.

I told him to check out this link, but I don't know if he will or not. He thinks that everything that is made just covers the cost of printing the magazines. He says that in his congregation nobody has EVER told them they have to put the money collected in field service back in the box.

Now I know we have at least one poster here from Australia. How does your congregation work this arangement out? Have you had a talk about donating when you pick up the literature, and then putting all donations in field service back in the donation box?

The 1914 Generation change

i was over on the thread about the blood policy and got to thinking how easy it is to just accept a change and after awhile people even forget all about how important it was at one time.

if the society does change the blood policy how long will it be before it is just accepted, and brothers and siters don't even recall the previous stance on the issue?.

this got me thinking about the change in the 1914 generation.

How true. I have never heard anyone question what was said at assemblies or conventions. All they ever do is say how GREAT the information was.

I have had some brtohers and sisters question things going on at the local level, but as soon as the elders get wind of it, and they always do because SOMEBODY always runs to them trying to get some points, they have a local needs talk about "never question" the elders. They would say how they were "handling" things, and don't get involve, don't talk with anyone else about how you feel, etc.

I think this was usually a sore spot with them, because usaually it had to do with something that and elder or MS or their wives or family were doing that they SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN DOING!

Oh well, I guess if we all just stick our heads in the sand and pretend that everything is PEACHY, we wouldn't have to think about all the problems![:l?]

ok, since it was so easy to get on here i'm assuming that this place is also over run by wts critics...but anyway!.

i've read a plenty of wt mags and got sucked in enough by the whole thing to go to a few meetings and do a bible study( which i wouldn't really call a study, since we just read one of their books).i soon broke of the whole thing and didn't even read another mag for about 6 years...6 months ago i wandered into h20 out of curiosity and ended up reading up on the arguments against the wts.. i have a simple question, and its probably very naive to ask this...but why is wts so afraid of debate?...there are plenty of sites arguing against the wts...but none for, apart the official site which doesn't address the issues raised by so called "apostates" anyway.. if the wt has the the truth why dont they just refute the the arguments against them instead of shutting up shop and labelling anyone who questions them an "apostate?

" or from satan or something.. i'm really beginning to think that all this wt business is just waste of time, that if i were to go to kh and ask questions that i have, i'm more likely to be labelled a trouble making agent of satan rather than be taken at face value as someone with serious questions.

Oh yes, the no debate policy. If you can't answer a question ignore it and maybe it will go away. Or change the subject, that was always a good way to get out of answering something you couldn't.

I have been on the internet for almost 2 years now, and these tactics are widely used. Many times on boards when faced with a question that can't be answered, brothers and sisters just fade away. Sometimes the come back hoping that the question has been forgotten, but many times they never returen, at least under the same name.

The society has trained them well!

This got me thinking about the change in the 1914 generation. I remember how this was a very important point when I was studying back in the late 80's. It was explained to me over and over that this system would defenitly end before the generation of 1914 passed away. It was the key point used to show me that the END was just around the corner.

I can remember to this day when the change came out. I couldn't believe my ears. They were changing something that had been preached for years, and that they used to prove that the end was close. Everyone else seemed to just accept it no questions. I can remember brothers and sisters being so excited because of the "new light". I was having a hard time with it, but everyone else seemed to be OK with the change. I thought that maybe I was missing something.

Over the last year or so I have come across brothers and sisters on the internet who are fairly new in the organization that don't even know what was taught about the 1914 generation. It hasn't been that long ago, but it seems like it has faded into the sunset so to speak.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Hi Waiting;

I bet the same kind of conversations went on back when "organ transplants" were a no no. I can here them saying the same thing, "No way would I get an organ transplant, and anybody who does should be DF'd or DA themselves!"

Of course today if a brother or sister needs an organ transplant, most go right ahead and get one. Many don't even know that at one time they were as bad as getting a blood transfusion. Today it is just another major medical procedure that is up to the INDVIDUALS as to whether they get one or not.

I wonder what it will be like say 20 years from now when a brother of sister needs a blood transfusion?

Someboyd brought out a point once on another site about the fact that every magazine they print gets paid for.

All 6 million JW's, and their children, each pay for their copies, and then they pay for ALL the magazines that go out the door. So if you look at it that way then it has to be profitable.

As for the cost of printing I have heard different qoutes, one site says that they make about 500% profit on the magazines. If that is right, and since EVERY magazine is paid for by publishers, and then extra money is made when people donatate, I would say they are doing pretty good in the printing department!

I know that there is a variety of posters here from different places. I have seen some from Canada, the U.S., and Australia, and England. So I wanted to ask about the "Donation" arrangement for literature.

Somebody in another thread mentioned the "double" payment thing. Where you donate at the hall when picking up the literature, and then again you are to donate what ever you get when going door to door.

Now I have a guy on another site that "claims" the society doesn't make any money because they get "free" literature, and the give it away, only taking a donation if it is offered.

I know how it is done in my area. It is the donate at the hall and donate what you get in service thing.

Is it different in other lands, or is this guy just trying to make it look like the society is being generous?

Predictions and Prophecy - Your turn baby!

we all know the organization hasn't been shy about making predictions for what could happen in the future as far as the world and world conditions go.. now its your turn to state where the organization will be in 2 years, 5 years and 10 years.

what will "conditions" be like?

what are your hopes?

Well lets see;

I would have to agree with Waiting on most points.

1. The society will have to change, and doing so I believe the numbers in the more developed countries will drop like a rock. Change will be like admitting they were wrong for so many years.

2. Yes smaller countries will grow, but the money isn't there, so this will hurt.

3. The young ones will continue to leave, and this will also hurt.

4. Like Waiting said the older ones will start to see the results of not planning for the future.

5. The elder arrangement as it is now will have to be changed. The way it is not results in to many elders abusing their athourity.

6. And last I think that if they are to survive into the distant future they will have to make apologies for all the things that were wrong in the past. This will be the tough one for them to do.

i have a conversation going on another site about hours and how important they are to a persons standing within the congregation.. one person is trying to say that hours don't mean anything.

that they are not that big of an issue whether you get them in or not.. would anyone here like to comment on that?.

Conscience Issues?

my pet issue is the conscience thing.

just whos' conscience are they talking about when they us this phrase "it's a conscience issue"?.

I have seen things that would be considered plain "wrong", but have been told it is a conscience issue. I have seen other things that I would consider to be a personal "conscience" issue and been told it was no no.

I get the feeling it all depends on who does it, and who complains. Also it depends on what the society puts out in print. Kind of like the voting thing. Last year the article came out about voting being a conscience issue, but I have yet to find an agreement on whether it is or isn't. Some say JW's can now vote if they so desire, others say no way.

Other things are a "conscience" issue, but if you do them you lose all privledges and become a marked person in the congregation.

Anybody else have thoughts on this "conscience" issue?
