  last week my ex husband sent a letter to the elders telling each and every one of them just what he felt about them.

  as they were d/f him he figured this was his last chance.

  in his letter he stated that as i had scriptural reason for divoce, so did he.

  Here is what is going on. The elder who said you could lie is not interested in helping you protect yourself. He is interested in one thing only, getting you to agree to be at a judicial hearing. By planting the idea that you could lie is to entice you to show up. Then, if you do lie (in his opinion) he will confront you with the letter your husband wrote as proff of your lie. The elders will have grounds to DF you whether they have proof of any other sin. They will have the lie.

  So, if you agree to go to the judicial meeting, nbe prepared to get disfellowshipped. They have made their minds up already. Unless, of course, you tell it all like it is, beg for mercy, and promise to return to the meetings. That might spare you beings disfellowshipped, but even that is no guarantee. - Jim W.

  WHY DO PRISONERS DISCOVER "RELIGION"?

  why is it that a number of people who commit the most henious of crimes, suddenly become "born again christians"--usually while sitting on death row?

  do they think this somehow absolves them of what they did?

  i remember when karla fay tucker was interviewed shortly before her execution (in texas) a few years ago.

  Some use the time to think, and when exposed to religious material, will convert and accept their situation. If released, I believe that they will be reformed citizens. On the other hand, all too many feign conversion to augment their parole hearings. If and when they get released, they return to crime. Jail house conversions have to be treated with suspecion, but it does happen. Jim W.

  I went back and read your posted link. I have to say that Luke 21:8 bugged me the very from the first day I was a JW. I was handing out a Society tract at the end of the day. It was part of the literature released at the District Convention in 1970. Oddly enough, someone accused me of being apostate until they were convinced by the "Servants" that I was properly handing out tracts as they all were doing. The tract is long gone, but the title still haunts me: "The Due Time has Approached." - Jim W.

  These kooks often seem to come from my home state of Oregon. There was the Bagwan Rajneesh cult leader, then the JW men who killed themselves and their families. I wish they would find another state, like the Nevada desert to gather kooks.

  An elder once told me that I can believe anything I want to in this organization as long as I keep my trap shut. In a sense, he was endorsing a type of lying to ourselves. This is not an uncommon trait among the JWs anymore. They don't have the truth to live for. Jim W.

  Is This An Urban Legend?

  i remember, many years ago possibly at an assembly, hearing the story about a baptism (may have been a family being baptised).

  upon being baptised, all members of the family cried both tears of joy (for the newly baptised's being anointed by god's spirit at that moment) and of sorrow (as they would never have everlasting life together in an earthly paradise).. is it urban legend?

  It is likely legend, because the Society make it most difficult for JWs to enjoy this feature of Christianity. If not legend, then this entire family is on the elder's watch list. - Jim W.

  talking about 1975 and the push by the society got me to looking at some older quotes.

  this one here really bugged me and still pisses me off when i read it.

  in this instance they are telling you to forget about jesus and listen to the society.

  Yes, absolutely. I always loved Freddie-isms. It was phrases like this that allowed me to stop toying with Jesus words ... as they put it ... and I became convinced that mature Christians will appreciate the urgency of the times as 1975 was so near.

  The Oct. 8, 1968 Awake! said that 1975 was God's appropriate time to act ... 1975, for JWs at time time, became a deal revealed and sealed in heaven ... God was soon to act in a matter of months or even weeks.

  I remember the summer of 1975 at the District Conventions. They said that perhaps God is keeping the door open a little longer out of his great mercy (soft peddle their failing prophecy) but not to be lulled into thinking this old system could go on another ten years.

  How long ago was that? 30 years?

  I specifically recall this article and the phrase, "unique teachings" ... and it seems that they published a very similar article in the early 1990s, or somehow, I managed to read that issue again in the early 1990s, as I was exiting the organization. It was important to me, because in the early 1990s, they published an Awake! article about how they are not false prophets ... in that article, they say that they only make suggestions as to prophecy ... yet, this 1986 articles imposes sanctions for those who do not accepts their suggestions. Thanks for bringing out that article. - Jim Whitney

They are those oh so all-important claims they make that other religions are doing such bad things ... yet they do the same thing ... but, they manage to draw some kind of technical distinction that really makes no difference.

  There are many of these hypocritical or dual standards in the JW religion. Here are two I can think of at the moment:

  Clergy Class : I fail to see the difference between Cardinals, Bishops, Priests, and Popes vs. Circuit and District Overseers, Elders and Governing Body. Except for Priest and Bishop, none of these titles are in the Bible. And frankly, except for some vague issue with the term 'father' the Bible really does not endorse or condemn the use of titles.

  Repetitious Prayers : Catholics are accustomed to certain formal prayers said from prayer cards. This practice was used by the early Christians to say the Lord's Prayer and the Apostles Creed ... a practice utterly condemned by the Watchtower organization. JWs taught me that my prayers must be from the heart only ... and never repetitious or formally by rote. Yet, JWs are exhorted by the organization to sing loudly with vigor, because their songs are a form of worshipful prayer. How many times have JWs repeated these prayer-like songs? Catholics also pray from the heart in non-formal prayers. So, what is the difference?
