Lisa,
I've always enjoyed your posts,
Thanks!
but this one I disagree with.
No problem! It's just differing approaches. There's never a one-size-fits-all way to change a dub mind. So it varies according to the situation.
Depending on the person I'm talking to, there are basically two different approaches I can take:
a) "Your God sucks": this works for some witnesses, because it breaks the mould of JW thinking in a very shocking and quick way. Some people will only wake up with stuff like that. (Farkel and Norm do it real good)
b) "Let me show you this line of reasoning": many witnesses are more suscetible to info presented that way, 'cause the communication style mymics the one they've been acostummed to. (Ray and AlanF deliver when they take that road)
When I don't know much about the person I'm talking to, I prefer to take the second one (which doesn't necessarily mean being extra nice). Although both approaches will likely close the dub mind anyway, the second one may yield some fruit in the long run, because "screaming" at him may serve as a confirmation in his mind that 'the apostates are indeed being guided by Satan', while a non-threatening approximation may leave the door open for future interaction.
BTW, I like the way Steve Hassan deals with that subject in his books.

i am curious as to why jws aren't allowed to have facial hair.
and why, then, was it okay for jesus?.

J. F. Rutherford, Watchtower's second president.
If male dubs nowadays don't wear beards, it's because of him. They don't have a clue.

i've read a few very interesting stories about people's experiences when they decided to purchase coc.i'd like to share mine and read yours also.. in 1999,not long after we purchased our first computer i started reading material about jw's.before long,i got really interested in the ray franz story because even up here in northern ontario,i had heard about the apostasy of 1980.in the fall of '99 my wife decide to take a college course(bucking the jw trend),and she would stay at her sister's place during the week.one day i called a christian book store to see if they could get me this book.i was very nervous, changed my name and i wouldn't give them my phone number.i told them i'd call back in a few weeks to make sure they had it before i went in to pick it up.. when the day came,i picked up my courage by two hands and took off for my 40 mile drive to get my book.the book store is located in a small shopping mall, which had me really nervous that another jw might see me going in or out of the store.i walked in the mall looking around, making sure there was nobody in sight that i knew.when i walked in the store,i had cash ready in my hands, walked up to the counter, gave my fake name and the book i was purchasing.now i just had to walk and make it to the car and i was home free.. i know buying a book isn't that hard,i do it all the time, but at that time the implicationsof having this book in my possesion was tremendous.. anyways,it's been 5 1/2 years and still nobody here knows.the book has really opened my eyes and mind to the realities of the wts.i would definitely recommend this book to everyone here who has yet to read it.it's worth the effort to acquire it and will take away your fear of the watchdollar.
seeitallclearlynow,
when I tried to hand my very open minded brother an email from Ray Franz, he got visibly nervous, and didn't want to be caught holding it if my kids walked in the room! I'm happy to say that after he read the email, he then sped-read C of C and commented that Ray Franz "is one of the Masters."
Great story! Though Ray wouldn't like this title very much...

last saturday an old friend of ours took her life.
she and her husband had almost been married 25 years, and we had known her longer than that.
she was like a little sister to my wife.
The Watchtower's flip-flopping New Light on funerals for those who commited suicide:
PROHIBITED:
*** w75 7/15 448 Questions from Readers ***
What viewpoint does God's Word indicate that Christians should have toward suicide?
(...)
On the other hand, where it is a clearly established suicide, members of the congregation and elders may desire not to become involved in the funeral. In such cases arrangements would be left to the family itself for a private funeral where some member of the household might say a few words for the sake of the relatives. Furthermore, some may not desire to attend a funeral of one who is believed to have committed suicide where the funeral is conducted by someone other than a member of the congregation or by the funeral director himself at the request of the family.

There is also the matter of giving a witness to Bible truths. Usually a funeral is attended by neighbors, acquaintances, business associates and relatives, who may not be believers. All these stand to benefit from a funeral or memorial service at which a discourse is given presenting the Bible view as to the condition of the dead, why men die and the hope of a resurrection. Because of such fine purposes being served, it seems that a Christian minister could see his way clear to conduct the funeral of a Witness? unbelieving relative?or even of one who, in a condition of extreme despondency or mental derangement, had taken his own life. And fellow Christians could extend comfort to the bereaved Witness by attending.

One more heart-wrenching story... There are so many stories like this one in the forum recently. That's what Watchtower Love is all about.
