My wife and I clean houses and have worked for gay couples over the years and enjoyed knowing them like anyone else, even as JWs. However, I knew Witnesses that would turn away jobs with gay couples. I always found that horrifying, but their reactions were ones of fear and it was so strange to me.

My last conversation with my dad before disassociating and subsequent shunning was him yelling at me for "loving the gays". It was a ridiculous, Bible thumping, bigoted and unreasonable diatribe directed at me because apparently years before I had mentioned things like genetics and how few of us choose our sexuality and therefore I " always took their side". He had harbored that for years.

JWs can be really over the top in their reactions. I'm glad to be away from them.

My brother died last night

i found out this morning that my brother died last night, he was also an ex jw, 73 years old and died of heart disease and kidney failure.

it was not totally unexpected, as he had been in poor health, but it's a blow, especially as i just lost another brother two years ago.

there were six of us, now only four.

I'm sorry for your loss. I just lost my dad a month ago. Death is tough, even if expected.

I'm getting baptized

i know i've started similar topics before but this time i'm serious.

my parents have been constantly pressuring me and after yesterday's watchtower study they asked me if i was going to be baptized this summer... and i said yes.

i probably should have thought about it more before making a final decision, but they're pretty much forcing me to do it anyway.

If I remember correctly, she is home schooled and very isolated other than time she gets to spend with horses. I may be misremembering but don't have time to go read her previous threads.

Just as her parents need to recognize she's just a child, so do some here. Your human rights or whatever don't mean a thing when your parents have your life by the short hair. She's in a bad position. She can't just tell her parents how it is and put them in their place, in all likelihood, without repercussions. It isn't fair for her parents to put her in a position where she MUST get baptized, and it isn't fair for us to do the opposite and apply pressure. She's a kid caught in a no win situation. Your rights as a kid go as far as those with power over you let them go, no list changes that unless she's willing and strong enough (how many kids are?) to exercise listed rights and get people in her corner.

Sweetie, if you have to play the game, then play it. Only you know what you're facing and what you can handle. You're not annoying at all. Any backlash here is just pain speaking from people that also went down a path. If your parents are threatening you, do what you have to do to get through your childhood.

Please take care of yourself. Take it one day at a time. None of us wants to see you baptized because we know what happens later, but ultimately you have to survive today before you can worry about tomorrow.

You mentioned an incident that you don't want to happen again. If you want to share you have listening ears here and we all want to help.

If baptism if in your future, I support you. I wish it didn't have to be that way but understand why it may have to be. They can never take away who you truly are underneath if you don't let them.

I certainly don't want to add more pressure, but if you don't stand up now you'll be forced to endure more intense ugliness later when you leave. The easy path today will lead to a much more difficult one later. You're a kid, so whatever you do today shouldn't have such far reaching consequences, but it does. I'm so sorry.

We accept you no matter what, but we all hope you can speak to your parents and let them know you're not ready and only said yes because they pressured you. They won't kick you out. Ugh, I'm sick just thinking of the pressure you're under.

Had a weird love-bombing throwback today......

my wife is having her first birthday party in july, and we're looking for a place to hold it.

we found an episcopal church online that offered their fellowship hall for such occasions, and we went to check it out this morning.

when we arrived they were having something in the hall and were setting up for it.

Thanks! I passed on the good wishes to my wife. She never had any friends as a JW as she grew up in a KH with no young people her age. She had 4 younger sisters and that was it. I love my wife and want the best for her and feel bad that she has always lacked confidence because of what her messed up parents and the organization did to her. She is the type of person that loves to be the center of attention and never has had that opportunity (other than parts on the TMS/assemblies and being bullied in school). She would have been in theater and plays if she had a fighting chance as a kid. We're doing our best to come up with fun ideas for her party so that she gets what she wants. We aren't likely to do a big party every year, but I want her to have fun and be herself and to realize that is okay.

Let me make it clear here that I have NO intention of going to any church and am not looking. The trip to the Episcopalian Church was only to see about renting their detached fellowship hall for the birthday party. I'm glad to hear that at other religious entities they are maybe more genuine than the love bombing at Kingdom Halls, but it still gave me serious flashbacks.

My wife is having her first birthday party in July, and we're looking for a place to hold it. We found an Episcopal Church online that offered their fellowship hall for such occasions, and we went to check it out this morning. When we arrived they were having something in the hall and were setting up for it. I'm guessing a Mother's Day event, small and for the church members. My wife and I walked in and it started, just like the days of yore with the J-dubs. People were asking if we were new to the church, very friendly, but very friendly with that desperate look in their eyes like you would get when visiting a rural Kingdom Hall where they desperately wanted new blood. They offered us cupcakes and other snacks that they had out and were very welcoming, to be sure, but we both got thrown back to the old experience of walking into a new congregation.

I do think we'll end up renting their place. My wife likes it, and she admittedly likes the thought of throwing a birthday party in a church hall just as a way of throwing it in the face of what her whole life has been like. It feels so wrong and so right at the same time. You only get one shot at your first birthday, and most people never remember theirs, but my wife wants one day to be just about her and to have fun and I want to make sure that she has it, even if renting places isn't cheap.

I hope we don't have to agree to a Bible Study to use their rental hall, lol. That would be awkward.

my son graduates with his bachelors degree, cum laude!.

he is the first in my family to graduate with a four year degree.
