Yes, they love them some MLMs. I just listened to a podcast called Household Name about Amway (also was kind of a preview of another podcast all about MLMs) and it was all just about as culty. Basically humans have a need and fill it with hopes and dreams and emotion instead of solid reality. I haven't had a chance to watch the video above yet.

Great video! Essential oil cults and the similarity to religious groups
by stuckinarut2 inhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsdriasvgtq.
this is a great video- well worth watching.. it shows how a multi-level marketing group that peddles psydo-science can be compared to a religious group..

Xmas, love it or leave it??
by DATA-DOG ini have to say that i’m not enjoying the xmas season.
i have no emotional ties and i’m spending money that i have not set aside for xmas during a slow work season for my trade.. i’m not happy about it, because it’s foolish to spend money when you aren’t making any.
then i feel like i’m expected to do all this, and to be happy about spending money and time on persons that i’m not that involved with.

We love it. There are gifts, sure, but that's not the focus. The tree is cool and has new memories on it as we go on in our new life, the people we will hang out with are fun, there are Christmas cookie exchanges and white elephant games and people are generally pretty happy unless their focus is on material things. You don't have to buy into the commercialism and can make it what you want. We don't have old attachments but we decided to have fun decorations and good times and to appreciate our freedom and what we've got.

Child sexual abuse suspect arrested in T.O.
by Tahoe inhttps://www.vcstar.com/story/news/2018/12/13/child-sexual-abuse-suspect-arrested-t-o/2305199002/ .
a 69-year-old thousand oaks man facing multiple sexual abuse charges by the ventura county district attorney’s office was arrested last week, authorities said.. steven skyler abbott was arrested dec. 6 after months of investigation into the reported sexual abuse of two thousand oaks girls, according to the ventura county sheriff’s office.
in november, the ventura county district attorney’s office filed multiple felony sexual abuse charges against abbott, including two counts of continuous sexual abuse, one count of lewd acts upon a child and one count of forcible lewd acts upon a child.. he is also facing multiple felony enhancements and special allegations related to his charges.. the investigation began in september, when the sheriff’s agency received a report of suspected child crimes.. a 16-year-old victim alleged that she was sexually abused by abbott when she was between the ages of 5 and 11, sheriff’s officials said.. sexual assault unit detectives subsequently identified a second, 24-year-old victim who reported that abbott had abused her when she was between the ages of 3 and 7, authorities said.. the sheriff’s agency said the victims and their families had come into contact with abbott through the kingdom hall of jehovah’s witnesses in newbury park.. investigators submitted their findings to prosecutors, who filed felony sexual abuse charges against abbot on nov. 16, officials said.. on nov. 28, an arrest warrant was issued for abbott.. the suspect was eventually arrested at his home on dec. 6 and booked into ventura county jail.

Yikes, that guy went after victims when they were pretty young. I really hope that doesn't mean that there are many more out there that were just too young to know what was really happening or to speak up. One sick person can inflict pain on so many.

The Reasons for Cart Witnessing
by Simon inwhatever we think of it, you have to admit that it's quite "genius".. the door to door ministry as done in western developed countries where the jw quirky religion has probably reached their saturation level was a complete and utter waste of time in terms of the effort expended to recruit people.. at the same time, it was rarely something that anyone enjoyed which led to people being labelled as inactive, being pressured to doing more and maybe ultimately deciding jwism wasn't for them and leaving.. there was also the issue that many jws are actually pretty bad at knowing and articulating their beliefs so were pretty incapable of getting any meaningful message across.. they solved all this with the cart witnessing.
the real point isn't to recruit, it's to make life easier for jws.
now they can stand and chat with their friend, have a coffee, not talk to anyone or make eye contact and still act as a walking billboard for jw.org.

A friend of mine has a take about the carts that I find interesting. He sees it as a way to reinforce the us vs them complex by sticking these people out in crowds while essentially remaining invisible other than with their partner. So it reinforces both the us and the them. It's kind of more isolating even with all the people around and makes them rely on their partner out there more. I can see that as an effect of it.

Do You Ever Wonder Where Certain Posters Are?

From what I hear Wake Me is just living life right now and taking care of her kiddo.
I think the site just runs its course for people. The goal for most is to become an ex-ex-JW I think. At a point there's not much more to say. I like to help people and get into the personal stories but otherwise there's not much more to talk about, nothing new coming out from the Borg to work through, it does lose some degree of interest. I think activism helps maintain that interest. You can do that here too by helping new ones. Interest does wane over time. It is nice to see familiar faces here though. Well, some of them. ;)

This is "just a rant" and he's just a jerk. I hope you directed this same rant his way. He needs to know how he makes you feel, also the kids.
The sad reality is that the cult will always come first if he's in it. I know what it's like to be that kid as a child and an adult. I'd try to take my dad fishing but we could never go in the morning because he had to go in service every Saturday without fail and then he'd have an elders meeting or something after. We pretty much always fished in the heat of the day but that's all that was left. You always get whatever leftovers there are after the cult comes first.

"Do not make any graven image" (oh except the one on the Ark of the covenant of course!) Huh??
by stuckinarut2 inso we all know that the first few commandments state that "there should be no graven images made" etc.... but, the very "ark of the covenant" had two angelic figures on the lid!
so the very box used to carry the 10 commandment tablets, broke those same laws!!!.
this observation, plus many other hilarious ones is highlighted in the latest episode of the how-to heretic podcast (episode 063).

I listened to that episode last week and learned a lot. I never was big on the stories in the Bible and a lot of stuff slipped past me. Stuff that probably would have opened my eyes way before I actually woke up. I love their podcast. That's a great share.

Charges against Jehovah's Witness accused of molesting a 4-year-girl in church dismissed
by Rattigan350 inhttps://www.ydr.com/story/news/2018/12/04/charges-dismissed-against-jehovahs-witness-accused-molesting-4-year-girl/2203041002/.
harges against a man accused of molesting his 4-year-old cousin in a york county jehovah’s witness kingdom hall in 2005 have been dismissed partly because the alleged offenses occurred when he was a juvenile.. john logan haugh, now 26, who now lives in delaware, was charged in may of this year with two counts of indecent assault of a person under the age of 13 in a case that shed light on the how the jehovah’s witnesses handle child sexual assault cases.
when john haugh appeared in court tuesday morning for a pre-trial conference, his attorney and the prosecutor had a discussion with judge maria musti cook out of earshot of the gallery in courtroom 7006. when court resumed, the prosecutor moved to dismiss the charges.

Well, though dismissed it was more legal technicality and as he said, they did more than the elders ever did. It also doesn't mean it didn't happen, plus there's still a civil suit for whatever that's worth. I'm sure that sometimes JWs are falsely accused. I'm not sure this is one of them but I guess it could be. Hard to prove much at this point.

Two witness rule: who cares?
by _Morpheus ini find people railing against the so called “two witness rule” puzzling.
i think its a complete and total non issue.
for those that protest, argue or advocate for change in that rule, why?
-
dubstepped
The two witness rule does matter in that it gets to how serious they view a thing but ultimately if they'd just say "this is a possible crime, we should have the police investigate" then the two witness rule wouldn't matter. I think it matters, but I think it's become the focus of many and really it's not the answer. They will hold to their "scriptural teaching" on the number of witnesses but regardless of what they do internally there needs to be external involvement as well. Nobody is going to change their internal policies but external forces can hold them accountable and enact mandatory reporting with penalties for failure to do so.
So it all matters, just at different levels.
