You know, I remember the whole Jim Jones/Jonestown thing when I was young. And I remember thinking "Now, THERE'S a group that won't pop up again to annoy us." The thing that bugs the bejesus outta me about the WTBS is the number of times they have been able to get away with the same kind of crappy predictions and ridiculous guidelines for Christian living for the past 130 years. There is NO COLLECTIVE MEMORY among the membership. You'd think that some of these folks would have said "Doggoneit! They told my grandpa that Armageddon would be over by 1914! WTF are they trying to pull on me?!" or "Hey! These clowns told Grandpa that aluminum cookware and vaccinations were deadly 75 years ago. Now they're telling my wife it's 'porneia' if she gives me a blowjob? WTF are they trying to pull on me?"

Looked forward to it - didn't know "new light" theory
by A Paduan inin 1983 the witnesses came to my door and assured me, with publications, that "this generation who was there at 1914 "would not pass away" - indeed they pushed it, trying to scare me into witnoidism if nothing else.
at the time i do remember thinking, "oh well, it's the end of them when they get that egg on their face" .
but i didn't know about the "new light" lying recovery technique - maybe i wasn't "as wise a serpent", or rather "thinking like a snake".

America does send a lot of Aid to the rest of the world.
This is not really true. Actually America is one of the developed countries that sends one of the lowest percentages of the national product as aid to the undeveloped countries.I've looked at the statistics on this one from several sources, and all I can think is "Too bad. So, we as a nation donate a smaller percentage of our GDP to aid the nightmares of the world. We still donate a huge number of dollars, and as we were told about two thousands years ago 'The poor will always be with you.'
We do it within our own country as well. We aid the poor here. But the definition of "poor" keeps expanding. There will always be a percentage of the populatiion who are 'behind the curve'. The average family here who might still meet the 'poverty' profile owns at least two color TVs and at least one automobile and may even own their own home. But we still call them poor. And some think we should do more to help them.

What really bothers me about my JW research.
by ithinkisee insome of you may know, but i have been on a serious journey through watchtower "theology", and by association, have gone back all through the history of christianity.
i know many on this list have gone thru the same thing.
i have checked out probably 100 archeological, religious, and history books from the library.

Then the Society changed their mind.
Yeah, I remember when it became a 'matter of conscience'.
I suppose all I really needed to do was to read with a discerning mind the books my father had on the shelf when I was a teen in the late 70s ... ones my grandfather had studied 40 or 50 years earlier. And had I compared some of those writings to the ones I was forced to study as a teen, I would have identified clearly the things which 'just didn't add up. I'm still glad that I walked away a long time ago, even though back then I couldn't put my finger on the exact reason why I did it.

Recycling: Not for True Christains
by jeanniebeanz inso, i'm sitting here sorting out my recycling since tomorrow is trash day, and i remembered something that happened years ago that gave me a chuckle.. it was a sunday botchtower study and the topic was things that we should be doing to prepare for life in the new system.
even as a child, i didn't answer from the magazine and they never knew just what i was going to say; they would usually not let me hold the mic myself just for that reason... .
i had been learning about recycling to preserve our natural resources in school (6th grade, i was 10) and had my comment ready to go:.

They probably just didn't want you encouraging the recycling of aluminum, which might have been melted down to make cookware ... which, as we all know from Borg publications of 70 or 80 years ago, leads to disease and death.

JW at my door this weekend
by Dawn inmy neighborhood gets worked about 1 or 2 times a year - and since i have been out a long time, and moved from another city, the jw's here do not know that i used to be one.. so - this poor unsuspecting man stopped on my doorstep saturday morning to share a scripture with me about the "last days" that we are living it.
i took the opportunity to point out that his organization has predicted armageddon more than once and it did not happen (of course - slipping in deut 18 about the false prophet .
he started to try and explain the whole 1975 fiasco when i stopped him and said that i was referring to their claim that armageddon would come before the generation of 1914 had passed away.. would you believe - he sat there on my doorstep and lied to my face telling me that the jw's never taught that armageddon would come before the generation of 1914 passed away .

He wasn't LYING to you. He was SHARING NEW LIGHT. :-P
I actually had a dub-ette knock on the door today. Unfortunately, I was on the phone with a customer at the time, so my wife took the Watchtower & Awake instead of allowing me the priviledge of sending her off with her tail between her legs. I suppose I should thumb through the magazines to find out firsthand how much wackier they have gotten since I left. -

The fairways are lined with trees. After leaving Dubdom, we became Druids.
