six human needs.
1. a need for certainty.
2. need for variety.
I wish one could make the pursuit of "god" a personal quest, not inflicting their personal, existential discoveries on others, while being intellectually honest enough to acknowledge what they can and can't prove. Maybe I am a bit of a heretic, but thats where I am at right now.
Jeff...that's just straight out poetry right there. I agree wholeheartedly!

It's the same question one might ask regarding the jws. If the religion pushes people to live a better life, then why is it so difficult to embrace the organization? The difficulty lies in the enforcing of a mindset. ..in expecting everyone to march in lockstep... and not question.
Coffee...actually it's not the same question. Different animal altogether, but I do understand the "enforcing of a mindset" and "expecting everyone to march in lockstep...and not question". I too have problems with that and that is why I am keeping an open mind with the global change debate. But what is it about the global change debate that forces you to march in lockstep? The fact that the government is spending money to fund the research? That goes on with all sorts of things that I don't agree with, so why would people that don't believe that there is global change draw the line in the sand there?
I guess that's the hard part for me to understand. I hear more anger directed at the global change debate than I see directed toward the wall street bailout! I just don't get the whole hatin' on the global warming thing...
You can work towards alternative energy, and conservation without the "sky is falling" mentality that is so common among global warming followers. Just because I don't believe in man made global warming/climate change does not mean that I have a problem with weaning ourselves off fossil fuels.
I agree, however you can also work towards alternative energy without the "drill baby drill" mentality that is so common among global warming naysayers. I don't have a "sky is falling mentality", but I do believe we need to do as much as we can to change the impact that we have on the earth and we need to start doing it individually as soon as possible.
As far as Ted Kennedy is concerned, I am aware of the Cape Cod "not in my backyard" position that all of the folk on Martha's Vineyard have taken and I think it is hypocritical. You won't get an argument from me on that one.

Even though I believe we are changing the climate, I keep an open mind to articles such as the one you posted. Here is where I feel things veer off course right in the beginning, before he even gets to the debate:
How did we ever get to this point where bad science is driving big government to punish the citizens for living the good life that fossil fuels provide for us?
That is just ignorant. We know that we have a finite amount of fossil fuel. We know we are dependent on foreign oil and need to change that. We know that fossil fuels cause quite a bit of pollution. So, knowing all of that, we know we need to change our approach to energy needs. However, the more we have people calling the global warming theory a hoax (which is also a theory, not a fact), the longer we will sit and do nothing. Change needs to happen, and is happening now. As I mentioned in an earlier thread, wind farms are a reality and are functioning well.
Here are some questions I ask people who believe global warming is a myth and they don't have reasonable answers for them, so perhaps you would like to help: If the global warming theory is pushing us to make changes to be energy independent and to seek methods that will deliver clean alternatives to fossil fuel, while at the same time cleaning up the earth (and yes, helping us not impact the earth quite so much)...what is wrong with that? Why is this so hard to embrace? Do you have a problem with weaning ourselves off of fossil fuel? Do you deny that we will eventually run out of fossil fuel? If so, when would you want to begin looking for alternatives to fossil fuel, after the wells start drying up?

saw robert f. kennedy, jr. give a lecture on "it's not easy being green" and "crimes against nature" last night at utc.
he really knows his stuff about what is going on with the environment.
he talked about how the coal mining in west virginia has torn down large mountains because they dump the rocks and soil into the rivers then the mountains are gone.
We know that other countries have reduced or have no ties to dependency on the oil from Saudi Arabia. The US could do it, too. Maybe in as little as three years.
If it is any comfort...we are already starting to do this in a large way. I work in the telecom industry and one of the hottest growth markets is in wind generation for power. I met with a customer yesterday who is in the middle of a huge wind generation project in Las Vegas, California, and locations in the Mid West that are building wind farms as we speak.
My customer mentioned that just one windmill (one blade of one of the propellers on these things requires a railroad car on it's own for transport) supplies enough electricity to power 10, 000 homes. Some of these are up and running now. Florida Power & Light has been supplying wind power for a few years now and is continuing, as is PG&E. Progress Energy in NC is looking into it now. If you listen to certain political rantings you might think that this is impossible and that we must drill in ANWR, but I don't believe this is true. We are heading in the right direction...let's just hope the "winds" of change continue.

i'm not a seahawks fan, nor am i anti-steeler.
i watched this super bowl just wanting to see a fair game.
and it could have been an exciting, close match- except that every time the seahawks got close the refs made a questionable call against them.
Memo to Patriots Haters: GET OVER IT!

you know what's really neat?
"seeing" people on here transform themselves over the years, healing from misbelief, gaining confidence in themselves, becoming strong enough to face the truth, educating themselves about logic, triumphing over toxic influences in their lives, etc.
there are some people here who have grown so much.
The longer I live, the more jaded, cynical, and apthetic I become about just about everything. I guess you could call that change.
That's because you are a Republican...try the other team JD, you might like it!

here's something i've never been clear on, being raised as a jw: what is the standard, "orthodox christian" if you will, teaching with regard to where the soul goes after death for each of the following 3 scenarios:.
1) a 3 month old baby, born to believing, saved christian parents, dies;.
2) a 3 month old baby, born to non-christian parents, dies;.
Is the question not important? ........( Don't sweat the small stuff.. it's all small stuff except God's love ) (My acknowledge personal opinion only )
Yeah...it's all small stuff until the "loving" bible god wants to punish you with everlasting torment for not knowing the rules of the game, or if you choose to not play that particular game. So...Cal, let's just say I told you to go play buzkashi. However you don't know the rules and you have no idea how to play, or maybe you would choose to play another game. I now tell you that you are forced to play the game, and play according to the rules or I will kill you or burn you forever in hell. Oh..and by the way??? I LOVE YOU. I am sure you would cry foul...but then that's just small stuff, isn't it Cal?
I am always amazed at how obtuse and limited the christian mind and philosophy is. It reminds me of my neighbor who, while a christian, cheated on her husband several times, snorted cocaine, abandoned her child to carry on the things that she wanted to do..but alas who went back to church and had been back for about a year and informed me that I was going to hell because I no longer believed in christianity. I explained that I had been married for 27 years, have always been faithful, don't take drugs, work very hard, and help others to the best of my ability and finances (all which she knows to be true as we have been neighbors for a long time). Nope, doesn't matter. I am still going to hell because I don't believe in Jebus or the Bible Tyrant. I laughed and said that maybe that might be a problem if I believed in god, or hell, in the first place. But considering I don't I pretty much have nothing to worry about.
exjdub (who is tired of all the christian bullshit that gets passed around)
Ps: Buzkashi for those who would like to play:
The object of buzkashi — a popular game in Afghanistan — is to grab the goat, gallop round the pole with the carcass in hand, race back toward the circle and drop the goat inside.
the world champions can't win a game anymore!.
who do you think will win the championship this year?
if i were to have answered that question a month ago, i would've said celtics all the way!.
In the 70s and 80s, everyone I knew was a basketball fan. Now, it's only baseball and football.
I used to be a rabid basketball fan and went to the Boston Garden 3 or 4 times to see the Celtics play when Bird, Parrish, McHale, DJ, Cedric Maxwell, Ainge played. But now, I don't even watch the playoffs anymore. Why? I think it started when great teamwork went out the window and too many players started missing wide open shots. Also, as much as Jordan was a great player, how many times can you watch the rest of the Chicago Bulls stand over the other side of the court to clear out the lane and watch jordan go one on one every time?
Other than Jordan and a handful of other players that were noted for shooting, you had a bunch of "pros" at that time who came to the league after the Bird/Magic era that would miss wide open shots from 15' to 20' away. That was almost a layup in the 70's and 80's!! If you left someone open from 15' away back then you would count the 2 points before it left their hands, and I am not talking about just the star players. Any Journeyman in the NBA could hit a wide open shot back then.
God I sound old...I remember the old guys talking about Cousy, Russell, Wilt, etc. when I was watching Bird and Company and I would roll my eyes..too funny. I miss the old rivalries between the Celtics, the Lakers, the Washington Bullets, the 76'rs, the Rockets, the Supersonics. Who could forget the finals when the Lakers came to the Garden and the air conditioning wasn't turned on (clearly an oversight!) in the Lakers locker room and it was very hot outside? When the Lakers got spanked they cried like babies and the papers had the story all over the place. I hated the Lakers and the Sixers, but I respected them immensely. I would be on the edge of my seat every time Magic, or Andrew Toney (the Boston Strangler) would have the ball in their hands. When Michael Cooper would cover Bird (the only person to ever have consistent success doing it) I would get nervous as a cat. Man the memories...I might believe in the Bible god again if he could bring those basketball days back!

ever notice vista thrashing the hard drive like there's no tomorrow for no apparent reason?
ever notice how vista will do this forever and without end?
every try to get work done but vista is too busy thrashing the hard drive and sucking up precious resources causing the system to slow down so much that you can't get anything done?.
Marking for later...thanks Elsewhere!!
