Anyone else like to sew??? What kind of Machine do you use???

i'm ready to get my sewing machines out of hiding, and will be sewing once again this winter.

i'd like to start quilting again, as it is fun to do, eases stress, and is healthier than just sitting in front of the tv.

i have even designed a few items of clothing in the past that i have sold, although i am by no means another madeleine vionet or issey miyake-lol.. i've always liked sewing machines even as a child (much to the dismay of my parents-lol), and there are a couple favorites that i have had for many years.

Hello Still thinking! You made a Roman Shade using iron on tape, and it turned out? Interesting. I tried making Roman Shades with a machine and they just didn't turn out right. Perhaps I'll take a look online to see if there are instructions for doing it the way you did. Thanks for your input!!!

Good evening Mrs. Jones! I have a box with a bunch of attachments, and when I dig it out I will drop you a note to let you know what ones I have to see if I have something that you are looking for. I'm sure that most if not all are Singer. It would be a pleasure to gift you any that I have as I never really use them, and would be grateful that they are going to someone who can make use of them!

A jeans company would be sooo cool! Whenever I'm out, I always look at the jeans section of thrift stores to find the rare "Big E" Levi's products and any unusual jeans. In all my years of looking, I've only found 2 pairs of jeans and one jacket with the Big E label. It's fun to look on Ebay to see how much a pair of jeans can go for, and it is not uncommon for them to go for over $1,000 for unusual jeans.

Take a look at this pair of 1940's Levi 501's. They recently sold for over $6,000 on Ebay!!! The lucky person who sold them probably got them for a song from a thrift shop or yard sale for some outrageous amount like a dollar or something. If we could only luck out like that we'd have it made!

Glander, I bet your wife is very Happy with her Husqvarna Viking, the Rolls Royce of Machines! The Kangaroo sounds adorable, and will be a nice hand me down to future generations! My Grandmother and Mother used to crochet and make nice afghans too. I still have one that my Grandmother made me in the 70's when I was but a wee lad, as well as one that my Mother made for me a few years later. They too used to make them while watching TV. They are real keepsakes, and I wouldn't trade them for the world.

Clarity, yes, this is a fun thread. It's neat to learn new things about each other, and helps show our human side rather than just words on a computer screen. I'm glad that you are feeling at peace, I am too!!!

Hello Mrs. Jones! I hope that you are doing very well! It's nice that you became interested in sewing at such an early age! I'm so happy that you got your degree, especially when higher education was frowned upon in the Org. It sounds like you have an eye for things too, which is just as important and is the perfect compliment to higher education. I worked with a guy who went to school but still didn't know how to blend colors or how to properly mix pattern and texture so that they go well together. He just couldn't get it. The fact that you have the eye, the talent, and the schooling is something to be very proud of and I know you would go a long way if you went into business! Have you designed and come up with a name for a clothing label yet? Have you thought about what your clothing lines would be called?

I bet it's cool that your Hubby shares your sense of fashion. Have you made anything together? You are truly blessed to have someone who shares your interests. I usually have to go at it alone when I am in a creative mood, as my Partner usually doesn't share the same interests that I do. He's more of a couch potato, lol but he does always encourage and compliment me, so that in itself helps make up for it.

If there is a certain type of machine or attachment that you are looking for, let me know and I will keep an eye out. Seriously. I run across lots of things. and I just may be able to get what you are looking for. I've shocked a couple of my friends as they have tried to find certain things over the years but have had no luck finding them even on Ebay, etc. but I have been able to track it down for next to nothing since I know lots of antiques dealers in different states.

The last belt that I got for my treadle machine is made of rubber. I have found it better than the leather belts, as it grabs the flywheel better and doesn't slip near as much or need adjusted like a leather belt. Even better, they are usually cheaper than a leather belt. It's been a few years, but mine cost under 12.00 with shipping, whereas the leather would have been just over 20.00.

PaintedToeanail, I think I know the old Westinghouse that you are talking about. Is it the one with the rounded wooden case? They were popular in the 20's. I'd be willing to bet that you can buy any parts for it on Ebay, as Westinghouse was a fairly common name in houselhold appliances. If not, you can part out the one you have, and use the money to buy yourself one that is in working order! The Carpet making attachemt must be cool as heck! I bey it would be fun to make your own rug!

I'd love to have another Toy Singer machine. I had one when I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, but I traded it for some other antiques to my friends who collects the machines. Hopefully i will find one at a good price again one day, I can't afford the $200-300 that they are now selling for in good condition!!! Here is as link to what I am talking about. The bidding is only at $30, but will shoot up to over $200...

Toy Sewing Machine

Hello Hortensia!!! I'm glad that you like knitting! I have heard that it is a fun hobby, but unfortuunately I don't have the patience with my hands due to the repetition involved, but I do know that they results can be well worth it for those who have the patience to finish. I know that there are football players who knit, and they say that it actually helps them when they are out on the football field! Who da' thunk it? lol I'd love to be able to do something intricate like Petit point, etc, but again, too much repetition for me, and it is hard for me to stay concentrated on one thing. The nice thing about sewing is that it is easy to just stop the machine, get up and do whatever until I am focused again, and then it is easy to continue where I left off.

Hey Happy Dad! I haven't seen you around in a while. How have you been? That was very nice of you to donate the sewing items to a worthy cause! I bet that the momories of your wife live on every time they use the machine or any other accessories! Being a performing arts school, I bet they have used the things to create some awesome costumes. If you want something for every day, occasional use, you can find a cheap portable at a yard sale or thrift store. They even have the little hand held machines that are battery operated and do a clean straight stitch. They look kinda hokey, but they do work if you are in a pinch and just want something for occasional use for very simple things. Then again, it only cost about $10 to hem a pair of pants at a dry cleaners...

Finally awake, it's neat that you learned on a treadle machine! I think that they were one of the most important and popular things ever invented. To top it off, they are still popular, everyone still wants one!

Moshe, My jaw dropped when I saw that picture! Klinger wore some very interesting things, and it looks like polka dots are not one of his better looks! It's neat that you weren't afraid to pick up a needle and thread, a guy can really learn a lot by sewing. Because we usually have large, clumsy hands, sewing and other handiwork trains us to do intricate things with our hands that will benefit us through life, like having the dexterity to put things back together or fix things that we break with hose same hands-lol.

Heather, the sewing box sounds like quite the treasure! I alwys look for them at estate sales, but they are usually among the first things to go as they are so popular. I've found some incredible things in old sewing kits, ie; 14k gold or sterling silver thimbles, bird shaped shears and other ornate sewing accessories. Even the baskets and boxes that the sewing items are stored in can be worth a lot of money. Yours is priceless though, as it holds a great sentimental value for you because it was given to you by your Grandmother. You should post some pictures of the flags!

Perhaps we are kindred spirits in the fact that we both love things of yesteryear, and we both like to incorporate those things in modern settings, giving them new life! I love antiques, and have been collecting since I was 12! Good luck with your shop, if I'm ever in Colorado, I'd love to stop in and see what kinds of treasures I can find! If you ever get any authentic furniture from the 1700's, or accessories from that time such as candlesticks, copper cookware, etc. let me know!!! The biggest item on my wishlist now is either a single or pair of Queen Anne period brass candlesticks from circa 1710-1725. They have to be authentic though, I'm not much into repro's...

Bsmart, thanks for the info about the tie quilts. I know it will be a challenge as silk can be tricky to work with. I will also be using real cotton batting, I just can't see using polyfill for handmade quilts when real cotton is still available, even though it is higher in price. I like to stick with the same natural things that our anscestors used. Do you have any pictures of your friends quilts?

Hello Ziddinia! Yes, you are right about the oil. You should never use 3 in one oil as it is much thicker than regular sewing machine oil. Sewing machine oil is a very light oil of low viscosity and any other oil can seize up the machine, and even cause parts to snap and break. Also, one should never use anything like WD 40, as it is not really a lubricant, but a moisture displacer.

The motors in older machines do not need much oil at all. Just a drop or 2 is all that is needed.

After oiling, make sure that you run an old piece of fabric through the machine before sewing, or else you run the risk of oil getting on your good sewing project.

It sounds like you must do a lot of sewing with having industrial machines. What kinds of projects do you do?

Here's a funny story about my experience with industrial machines. My Uncle had a friend who was a Dominatrix. Her name was Mistress JoJo, and she owned a leather store which made their own leather goods. I worked for her for several months, and learned how to make all kinds of unusual items. We used heavy duty machines to sew the leather. It was an interesting job! I was allowed to use my creativity and imagination to make my own designs to sell in the shop. Needless to say, I met some "Interesting" customers, and I even got to "Model" the things I made for a few of them! I still have a pair of leather motorcycle chaps and a harness that I made.

Clarity, the Pandemonium quilt is Awesome! I don't think I would have the patience to do something so intricate with so many pieces. I can see why they call it Pandemonium!!!

Here's a hint if you want to get some really good top of the line quilting fabrics-Go to Interior designer studios and furniture stores. They have books of designer fabric samples, and the books get replaced when new fabrics come out. Many times they just throw away the old books, and if you ask really nicely and maybe get in good with someone there, they will save the fabric sample books for you. Each book contains anywhere from 50-100 or more swatches or samples. You wouldn't believe what you can get-for free!!! Many of the fabrics in those books are designer fabrics, ie; Kravet, Schumacher, Manuel Canovas, Osborne and Little, Chanel, etc. that cost sometimes $200-400 per yard, and you can get the swatches for free!!!

When I was an Interior Designer, I hated to throw the books away, and I would put them out in front with a free sign, and they would be gone in a heartbeat. The really cool thing is that the fabric samples in the books are already cut into standard squares!

Whenever I would do work for a client, I would keep any leftover fabric for myself, and would make throws, throw pillows, drapes, etc. for myself. Just one of the perks of the business...
