A "Sobering" idea for New Years: to benefit Asian Tsunami Victims/Survivors
by Fleur ini just had a rare moment of clarity and i wanted to share this idea with you all.
i plan to pass it along to everyone i know, hoping that it might, just might, catch on.
i am proposing a totally painless way for people to reach into their hearts, and wallets, to help those so desperate for aid following this weekend's tragedy in asia.

Thanks! I think that people have big enough hearts that they will want to do something really meaningful this New Years...I know that in the wake of this event I hardly feel like partying...I feel like doing something more significant and meaningful.
Thanks for caring, and reading. Please help pass the idea on.
hugs,
Esmeralda
Toast with clean drinking water...and donate the party funds to Asian relief efforts...please!

My idea is simple. Instead of toasting the coming New Year with champagne, or other alcoholic beverages or party events; what if people instead just get together with those they hold most dear, toasted the new year with a glass of water (Which we are all so lucky to have available to us in most of the world, but millions of Asians do not have access to right now.) and contributed all the money we would spend on snacks, and alcohol for that night or other entertainment items/activities to Asian tsunami relief efforts?
I may be crazy that people would go for this...but I just have to put the idea out there. It came to me in a flash of thought, and seemed too simple, and too effective, to dismiss.
Might just cut down on some drunk driving accidents, too.
Please consider...and share this idea with anyone you think might be willing to give it a shot. Even if you pass on one 5.00 beer at the bar that night and contribute the money...how fast it will all add up.
Thanks for listening,

WITNESS MENTALITY TOWARDS THE TSUNAMI DISASTER
by Mary ini feel like screaming right about now...........the dickhead who takes our bookstudy group just came over and said "...i wonder how many brothers and sisters died in the tsunami disater.
" while that's a natural concern, his next comment blew me away "....it figures that the media hasn't bothered mentioning jehovah's witnesses helping out in this disaster!
" i looked at him stunned for a minute and said "and why on earth would they mention jehovah's witnesses?

Stuff on the tip of most JWs' tongues:
- They now have the hope of resurrection and working toward everlasting life (disgustingly, this translates to "they're better off dead")
- We do our charity work by giving so much of ourselves in the ministry work ("you ain't gettin' a dime outa me")
- We are seeing the fullfillment of biblical prophecies. To mourn them would be to mourn Jehovah's purpose. (They are really looking for the bright spot and hoping that it signals the long-awaited slaughter of 99.9% of the world's population)
Ugh, those are right on and so sickening!

I found this fascinating, I heard this on the local news and then looked it up on the Americares website:
Financial Reports
If you would like to request a copy of our latest annual report or Form 990, please email our Finance Department here or view our 2003 annual report
In fiscal year 2003, every $100 donated enabled AmeriCares to deliver $2,880 in emergency relief - everything from medicines like antibiotics and analgesics to medical supplies like bandages, syringes and nutritional supplements. With a global reach that has extended to more than 137 countries since 1982, AmeriCares has delivered more than $3.4 billion in aid.Imagine, being able to send almost 3000 dollars worth of medicine to asia for a 100 dollar donation. Pretty incredible work that the do.

RE: SASSY'S PLEA FOR HELP WITH TSUNAMI DISASTER
by azaria inconvince me that i'm wrong.
i am extremely disappointed with the response.
but the same thing happened during the crisis in the caribbean (haiti etc) a few months back.

Giving and bragging dont go hand in hand
true. most people who give don't like to publicize it. You can't know what your fellow posters here have done/are doing.
I didn't even see Sassy's post...threads move so fast here it's hard to keep up. I've been seeking out posts on the tragedy to respond to them and somehow missed that one. I will look for it now.
Please don't judge others by the responses. many may have missed the post too and have likely already donated but don't want to say where or how much because they don't want any attention for just doing the right thing.

Does God Really Care
by Undecided in.
when i read of the many natural calamities that have killed billions of people over the centuries i wonder if god is interested at all?
when i see the importance that the bible makes of just one death of god's sons, when he was resurrected and given a higher position just 3 days later, what about all those millions of human sons.. i guess we are like an ant hill to god, if you happen to step on it, who cares.. ken p.

God is not responsible for our dreams of separation and death.
This phrase caught my attention and I wonder if you would elaborate. Like the Toltec 'Dream of the planet' Don Miguel Ruiz writes about?

They ruin childrens lives.I have been told by both my parents"well at least you werent molested"-because they had been. What kind of statement is that to make to your kid.I have since cleared up many of these issues with my parents, but I still dont think they'll ever understand what they did to our family. My older sister{25}is stuck in a crappy marriage she was forced into by herself,my parents and the religion-clearly brainwashed. My younger sister(18)from what I hear is very confused and cant bring herself to leave this crap, probly for fear of losing her "friends"...........Again,i tend to rant, sorry about that.........more to come i guess
welcome STP, I hope that your sister won't be stuck in that marriage forever...and that your other sister will find her way out too. I am so sorry for all you've been through. I was 'born in' too and can relate to your post a lot.
I feel sad for your parents too, having both been molested, that is just awful. What a rotting mess hides beneath the clean cut exterior image of JW's.
