something that is really vile but I am wondering if I'll acquire a taste for it. I went into a very posh gourmet chocolate shop today, and feeling cheap got the cheapest chocolate in the shop. It was still expensive. It looked like it had nuts in it and I thought, okay, I can live with nuts. But it's NOT nuts, it's chunks of PEPPERCORN. And it's totally disgusting but it's the only chocolate I have in the house so I keep eating it. Do you think long years as a JW saps your willpower?

Favourite comic book or comic book hero ?
by El blanko ini noticed somebody said they were bored, so i thought i'd start up a ' fluff ' thread .
i have been a minor fan off and on of comic books through the years (although not as obsessed as a guy i know of who owns 1000s of the comics and delves deeply into that particular universe of artwork for spiritual insight) and have a favourite book that inspires thought and fires up my imagination:.
' watchmen ' written by alan moore.

I always liked, and still do but don't read them anymore, Archie and Veronica and Betty and Jughead and Reggie.
Me too! They were such idiots, but I loved them.
Definitely siding with myauntfanny, or should I say my Dear Old Aunt Petunia?
Whatever floats your boat, babe, but why? Wait, was their an Aunt Petunia in there? I've forgotten that. Has anyone read Cavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon? If you're a comics freak it is the ultimate novel, all about the history of comics, and a fantastic read besides. -

What effect did, being called "Brother or Sister" have on you?
by JH ini remember a month ago, receiving a slip at my door, saying that the memorial is this coming sunday, and it was signed by an elder, saying "your brother" elder so and so.
it was as if he and i were at the same level by writting "your brother".
the first reaction i had, seeing "your brother", acted as if we had a special bond, with a responsibility attached to it.. do you think that being called "brother or sister" is a way of manipulating you, a way of getting more out of you?

I think it's a way of creating a false sense of family and of making people assume a false responsibility for each other. That's one of the big reasons the whole stumbling argument is so powerful. If they said "don't wear a pink dress shirt because it might stumble people who attend the same church as you" a lot of people would say "yeah, and?". But if they say it might stumble your brothers and sisters, that triggers all the guilt and loyalty feelings of real family members. That's my theory, anyway.

The Soap Opera Continues
by JohnR inafter reading many stories here i guess i should have seen this coming but i would not have thought it possible with my family.. my brother and his family went over to the org over ten years ago.
we were informed recently that one of my nephew's(jeff) got out and we could not be happier.
jeff is seeing a woman who is very nice.

That's the problem with JWs, they constantly make the simplest things complicated. One solution might be to have another family dinner that includes the nephew. Schedule it before the one with your brother, then you can talk about Jeff's opinions and activities in front of his father, in a friendly spirit. That might make him miss his son, and be sad and jealous that you know what's going on with his son when he doesn't.

Is WTS wrong Christianity flawed?
by XQsThaiPoes ini notice the most qouted parts by the wts is the ot and the epistles .
all there rules are reinforcements of what is already there.
infact the letters to the early congregations are very watchtowerish.

I have to agree with you, XQ. I'm not a bible scholar but when I look at the bible I see a fair amount of justification for what the JWs do, and it just makes me dislike the bible.
Robert Graves wrote an interesting book about Jesus called "King Jesus" in which he goes through a lot of historical evidence that the story of Jesus was a reworking of the pagan Fisher King pagan mythology that had been around for centuries.

JW Lingo..
by Sassy inwe've talked about this subject several times since i joined this site... .
time and again i will get together with xjws and they still refer for instance to being a jw as being in the truth.. .
i've talked to people who have been out 2 or 5 or even 10 yrs and they still refer to it as that in their conversations... .

I've been out 30 years and sometimes I'll find myself starting to say "The Truth" while I'm talking about JWs. It's a very freaky feeling.

What was the silliest thing they told you NOT to do?
by goddess_baal inthere was some really piddily-crap that i remember.. for instance, when i was about 17 toe-rings became popular, and one of the sisters bought one....wore it to the kh during the summer with her sandals.
my best friend in the hall wanted one, which of course caused this huge debate about whether it would be okay 'in jehovah's eyes', and didn't it go against the scripture that counsels women against "bodily adornment", blah-blah-blah.
toe rings??!

A man in my congregation one time was publicly reproved for having cuffs in his trousers, and his wife for wearing a granny dress.
