Totally Blown Away

hi all.... i started reading and posting here some years ago, as my stepchildren were being raised jw's by their mother, and at one time in my misguided life i had studied w/the jw's.. anyway, time went by and we had less and less contact with the kids...until a couple of weeks ago.

my stepdaughter j swung by the house and we noticed something very different about her.

she was lively, talkative, fun!

First...sorry for the double post...

We don't know the "whole story" of why she left...she's been seeing a young man who's a Christian...and we think he "rubbed off" on her. We truly don't care...She seems to have a plan and purpose in life now...I can just imagine the chaos though...her mother must be fit to be tied. We're planning to invite her and her boyfriend for dinner next weekend (we're out of town this weekend attending the family weekend for my son who's at army basic training).

I don't know if she was ever actually baptized...I don't think so. She wasn't really "into" the whole JW thing for quite a while, but actually leaving is more than we had hoped for. She seems to have shed the whole mindset.

Anyway, she called the other night and said something about "church" and "Easter". THEN she dropped the bombshell..."didn't I tell you? I haven't been to the Kingdom Hall in quite a while and have NO intention of ever going back". Needless to say we were completely blown away! She's a nursing student, a lifeguard, she teaches lifeguarding and swimming,

So...one's out...YAHOO!!! We'll keep hoping for the other one!

We might be moving to Mississippi-any advice?

a job offer has come our way that looks excellent.

however, it is located in pascagoula, ms. i am wondering how the area is faring since katrina.

does anybody know this area, and if so, what is your view of it.

My husband and I explored transferring to Pascagoula. I have some friends who transferred down there. The advice was to live on the west side of Mobile AL. From what my friends have said, the cost of housing is fairly low (especially compared to where I live now). We looked at real estate in Ocean Springs, and the homes we saw in our price range were close to twice what we have now...for example, we found a 5 br/3.5 bath 3000 sq ft home on 3/4 acre, inground pool, nice landscaping, about a mile and a half from the gulf for what we could sell our home for now, approx 350K. There was a lot of new construction in the 175K to 250K range. If it wasn't for certain family complications (taking care of my elderly mother, and my aunt being in a nursing home here), we would have jumped on the opportunity.

Soup Recipes Needed

This is how I use the last of the turkey carcass at holiday time:

1 turkey carcass with some meat on the bones, and all that jelly stuff that's in the bottom of the roasting pan

onions, celery, carrots

Put the carcass in a big stock pot, cover w/water, chop veggies, throw those in. Add seasoned salt, pepper, whatever

Boil it until the carcass comes apart

strain, add back veggies and meat if you desire

toss in some corn, peas, pasta, potatos, whatever you have handy, and some left over meat

Simmer until added veggies are done

serve

This can be divided up into 1 gallon containers and frozen. I pull out a frozen container, dump it in the crock-pot on low and it's ready when I get home from work.

this usually ends up being about 5 gallons of soup...

Meetings are very children unfriendly

i guess the parents can appreciate this one, and this is a very imporant issue since kids are a huge part of your lifel.... have you noticed that meetings are so not children friendly?

you are expected to keep you children, regardless of age, quiet for 2 hours.

the expectation is that they are as quiet as an adult.

My stepdaughters who are JW could sit, silently for HOURS! When my husband and I started dating, they were 11 (twins). They could sit on the couch and say nothing at all or just whisper for hours on end. It was unreal. Now that we have little ones of our own, it's been hard explaining to him that normal children run, jump, play and make A LOT of noise. Evidently his girls never did. Strange...

By the way, my husband never was a JW and his x-wife being one contributed to his divorce, and the fact that we never see his girls now (they're 22) unless they want something. I hope they're not expecting a Christmas invite this year...it ain't happening.

Is the "My Book of Bible Stories" appropriate reading for Little Ones?

my little boy, aged 4 1/2 loves his bedtime stories, and also loves "jesus stories" as he calls them... .

now, i have never gotten around to going to a book store and actually buying a childrens bible story book from the shops (yes...i still have a bit of a mental block and some deep seated issues about any religious literature).

my mom gave my kids a copy of the bible story book, as well as listening to the great teacher (the new soft cover book - think it is called that?

I bought a book called "The Children's Devotional Bible". It has something like 150 Bible stories in it. I got it at the grocery store. My girls love it! It skips over the really gory stuff, and is pretty kid-friendly.

Wife abuse

some days its so far in my past, i can hardly recall it.

this morning it was very close.

i can go along for months, sometimes years and not think about it.

I wasn't a witness, but I also was an abused wife. He made me believe I was fat, ugly, worthless and stupid. He finally did me a favor by throwing me and the kids out on the street. We were homeless but we were FREE!!! 10 years later, we're STILL paying for what he did. I have problems with my older children, they learned at their father's knee that I was not worthy of respect. One is locked up because she never learned to respect herself or expect a man to respect her. My older son treats me like dirt, laughing at me when I tried to lay down the rules. My younger son spent years trying to come to terms with his father saying he loved him but hated me, knowing that he was as much a part of me as he was of him.

I've lived that nightmare and I swore when I got free that it would NEVER happen again...it didn't! But to this day, if I have to deal with the X, I get physically ill.

To all (abused wives and children) who might be reading and lurking...PLEASE...get out of the situation...there IS a way out. It isn't easy, it isn't fun...but you are NOT what he says you are. You are beautiful, smart, wonderful and worthy of respect and love!

Know this...life CAN be wonderful...

Purps, thank you for writing what you did...I sit next to you and cry, for us, for all the wives and for all the children, for what was taken from us, for what we've fought to regain.

For mother's out there...cleaning a son's bedroom!

my son is twenty years old, a good kid, is doing great in college so i usually keep the door closed to his bedroom so i don't have to look.

today he took out a huge batch of laundry for me to do and the odor from that bedroom had me reeling.. here is my humorous but deadly serious post on the matter:!!!!!.

after vacuuming, enough dust to fill the entire dust bin in the vacuum.. enough change on the floor to keep him in fast food for a week.....(don't ask me for money).

My youngest son is 17. I closed the door about a year ago...when the dog refuses to enter his room, then I tell him he needs to clean it up...and yeah, the smell is indescribable. Thank goodness for the airwicks in the hallway!!!

Stop college or keep plugging on?...opinions please.

here's my situation...i'm doing college online because i can't very well do college the traditional way with a 2 year old.

anyway, my computer has been acting really funny and it's not reliable anymore.

my ex worked on it for almost 4 hours and the darn thing still crashes saying my "virtual" memory is too low.

Keep going! You can do it! I went back to school in 1999 at age 35. I finished a 2 year degree, AAS in 2001. I'm now completing a 4 year BBA degree online. Life will only get more hectic as time goes on. I'm doing online too. I'm finishing my first quarter and so far so good, I have an A average. Next quarter, I'll be taking 2 classes. Financially, it's not much of a strain for me as I do have tuition reimbursement from my employer, but books cost anyway. Is there any way you can find what text they're using by the ISBN number and order from Barnes & Noble or Amazon?

I have 3 kids at home, ages 2.5, 4 and 16, take care of my mom, and work about 50 hours a week. YOU CAN DO IT!!! Just think of the opportunities when you're done! Find out about the FASFA, student loans, grants, etc. There's also a website for scholarships, I don't have the URL on me, but google scholarships.
