I think I had seen an article in the Awake about Sly and the family stone being witnesses.....
You may be thinking of the article in the Awake! about Larry Graham becoming a JW. The other members of the group were not JW's.

this just in on tonight's grammy's ,,,,,,
but perhaps the loudest applause -- and certainly the most amazement -- greeted sly stone as he joined a tribute to his music in the middle of "i want to take you higher.".
the onetime leader of sly and the family stone, who has avoided the public eye for many years, appeared with a bleached-blond mohawk haircut, not to mention a metallic greatcoat, sunglasses and a giant "sly" belt buckle.

the april 1st watchtower has an interesting section on : 'meeting the requirements for christian baptism.'.
paragraph 9:.
in the case of youths, come develop a measure of spirituality at a relatively tender age, while others take longer.
I knew a child who was baptized at the age of 7. This child answered fluently at the meetings, was conversant at the doors, kept up on her own return visits, could explain anything in the current literature to anyone who asked. This child didn't need anyone to prompt her, the knowledge was her own. She was a great little kid, well-behaved, a joy to be around, the youngest of five children being raised in a one-parent household (all the other kids were just like her).
When the child was 8 she ran away from home. There followed a huge custody battle, and when it was over the child was taken to another state to live with her dad.
I met up with this child again when she was 14 and in legal trouble. I saw her several times in the course of a few weeks. It was obvious that she was no longer living as a JW so one day I asked her what had caused her to change.
Her sincere response was "When I was seven and a half I found out I could do bad."
Was her baptism the result of an informed decision?

i know mine has.
i went back to my flat earlier this afternoon to pick some things up, i am moving out of there slowly, and was carrying a heavy box out to my car when i stumbled and dropped it on my foot.
it wasn't too painful, thankfully, but i came out with a stream of expletives, most of them beginning with f. when i was a jw, even thinking those words would have filled me with shame.
I've dropped the Theocratese but other than that, no, my language is the same.

my ex-bf is a baptized jw, i've been studying for about ten months already and i'm about to start in the school.
when we were together, we were very intimate, there was never any penetration, but there was pretty much everythings besides that.
not that its anyone's business but this included oral sex and such.
If you are not yet an "Unbaptized Publisher" then you are not in a reporting relationship with the elders. They would have no right to ask, you would have no obligation to tell.
he also said that anyone who knew of a baptized JW that had participated in such things had to confess it, and that that JW would possibly even be excommunicated
This is an unusual statement. From my perspective it looks like the elder (using his wife as the "second witness") is out to get your ex-bf. Unless you come across the same information in print in a WT publication, why not take his statement as his personal opinion and let it go? Best wishes,
Nina
of the 10 points mentioned that the wtbts is not a corp, which one do you not agree on and why?
personnel committee symposium.

unclebruce, you stated:
I can put up a long boring post examining and tearing apart everything the GB man had to say but have prefered to waste as little time as possible getting directly to the point & stating the glaringly obvious.
My original statement still stands. "Corporation" and "corporate attitude" are not the same thing.
How many years were you a student at the University of Awake?
Nina (NOT a COP)
Ozziepost: Where I come from it's considered good form to keep on topic when posting to a thread.
Without further ado......

One of many descriptions of the Straw Man fallacy can be found at: http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/straw-man.html
Description of Straw Man
The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply ignores a person's actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position. This sort of "reasoning" has the following pattern:
Step by step here:
1. In the original post the subject line read as follows: 10 Reasons why the WTBTS is NOT a CORP... Bethel Lecture by GB Member Losch
2. You, unclebruce, edited the subject line to suit your purpose: 10 Reasons why the WTBTS is a CRAP TRAP... Bethel Lecture by GB Member
3. Next you attacked, not the original position but your own distorted version : " Mind if I wade through the Watchtower double speak to try'n decode what the man really said?"
4. Refer to #4 above.

Come on, unclebruce, you can do better than to attack a straw man....or maybe you can't.

In this lecture Losch isn't saying that WTBTS isn't a corporation, in fact he does say WTBTS is a non-profit corporation.
"... a "non-profit corporation"? "
He is speaking against adopting a "corporate attitude" (which he then goes on to define).
"does not endorse a corporate attitude"
Take care,

i can just imagine the faces of the elders if i arrived at the field service meeting with this.....
What is it?
i dont know if you guys noticed or not.
but there is a general consensus among my friends and some witnesses that i talk to that there is something almost inherently wrong with californian witnesses.
(i'm on the east coast) .
I "got the truth" in Hollywood congregation and I can't say that there was anything too wild going on there!
Lemme think.....there was a brother who wouldn't play any music other than Kingdom songs, there were several verrrry old people, well-respected as being "of the annointed", there were several self-employed Elders raising families, a few musicians, the occasional famous JW (but they weren't actually in Hollywood congregation).
There was a "sister" baptized the same day that I was who never appeared at the Kingdom Hall after that date. The brothers went to check up on her and found her living in an apartment on Hollywood Blvd., um...."plying her trade". Sheryl S., if you're reading this, we missed you at the baptism party that night!
