Letter to elder, does it make any sense?
by PinTail indear steve, since our last study together at our home i have had a few perplexing questions concerning the lunches and other communications with my wife pat while i was left at home, along with my never being asked to participate notwithstanding of who is paying for the meal; besides being her husband and head.. i have wanted to send this letter of inquiry concerning this matter, because it has weighed heavy on my mind, and also in view of the fact that don said at my door earlier with the other fellow that was with him, that you really liked me.
i feel you are a very good teacher as i mentioned to you on the phone as well as a wise man, so it is in this spirit that i have sent this letter to you.. after the last lunch that you and your wife had with my wife that was at lest two or three in number, me and my wife discussed why the questionings and mysterious arrangements that were apart from me appeared to be planed that way?
ever since that time i have mulled it over in my mind even at times waking up at night wondering just why there were these coordinated lunches to discuss studying or possibly other subjects, when i would never have restricted my wife?s desire to study even if i do have misgivings concerning some congregational policies.

72% Voter Turnout in Iraq
by Elsewhere inthe voter turnout for the 2004 us presidential election was 60.7% (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/a10492-2005jan14.html).
despite being threatened by terrorists, iraq's voter turnout was much greater than the last us voter turnout!
i'd say it was a far greater success than expected!

Yeah, that's my main objection - those sweeping generalizations. Even if we exclude Spain, France and Germany were a minority in Europe with Italy, UK, Poland (and Ukraine) sending troops. It makes little sense to say European countries have done nothing to help US if you just mean two major countries.
Unfortunately, many Americans subscribe to the John Kerry school of thought. Also, say that the allies were coerced doesn't help either. From the 2004 presidential debate:
KERRY: The United Nations, Kofi Annan offered help after Baghdad fell. And we never picked him up on that and did what was necessary to transfer authority and to transfer reconstruction. It was always American-run.
Secondly, when we went in, there were three countries: Great Britain, Australia and the United States. That's not a grand coalition. We can do better.

This thread is now are you a Democrat or Republican? Do you support Bush or not?
Can't we just be happy for the Iraqi's having their first democratic election in a very long time?
Back to the original question, did you watch the Frontline about al-Qaeda that is airing on PBS this week? -

This is a bit harder. The idea that the first were the students in 1980 in Iran is ludicrous.
That was the first direct attack against the US. Before it was Westerners in general. Terrorism in general has been around for a while.
In fact, they could be classed as terrorist insurgents because, as history documents, there were even incidents of terrible attrocities against British soldiers as well as civillian loyalists. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
To be honest, I really find your analogy of our country's independence egregious. Are these terrorists trying to form their own country from occupation. Keep in mind that the majority of Iraq's insurgency is being done by foreign fighters (Jordan, Syria, Iran, etc).
So, we bombed the crap out of Afghanistan to corner this dude...but then, when we nearly had him, Rummy tells our boys "Okay....now stand down...we're going to hire the "Northern Alliance" to go in and ge him....so that doesn't work. What do we do? Oh, what the hey...let's just invade Iraq
There was never any any evidence bin Laden was in Tora Bora. Even Gen. Tommy Franks (the commander at that time) said so.
So what to do? Well, teaching tolerance and providing steps to reduce poverty are always a good start. People who have their basics and some meaning to their lives tend to be much more peaceable.
Even if that were to happen, it would still take a long time to sink in. -

Who besides WTS believes in 607?
by ezekiel3 inthis is a genuine question on my part.
i understand the arguments for 587 vs 607 regarding the destruction of jerusalem.
what i want to know is, are there any organizations (religious or other) besides jws that believe 607?

When I was researching this question, I found only one non-JW reference to 607 on the Internet. Even then, the site seemed to be from an x-JW who formed his own church.
I spent hours going to libraries and book stores looking at their history books for 607. I couldn't find any reference. The Watchtower hasn't found one either as you cannot find any quote or reference in any JW publication that says 607. -

I have seen so many opinions on this, and experts on each side discounting what the others are saying that it makes the head ache.
I really haven't seen any experts say there isn't a problem. They only vary on how grave they think the problem is.
Can someone summarize please?
Radical muslims are creating terrorist cells in Europe. They have already tried to carry out many attacks including the train bombing in Spain. Many Muslim immigrants are coming to Europe. They can't find a job and turn back to religion and some find an extremist mosque/peope/iman.
Who attacked who first?
Depends on how far back you go in time. Some say the first act of terrorism was in Iran in the 1970's when a group of students took over the US embassy.
What was the response?
The US sent an ill fated Special Forces mission to free the hostages and had many problems. For years US foreign policy simply ignored a growing threat. This was up to and including the Clinton administration. After 9-11, things changed and these extremists were given more attention.
How did that go?
Just look around. There is a growing fundamentalist movement. It will keep on getting worse because it would be polically incorrect to target a certain group or religion.
Finally, what in the blue blazes can someone like me do about it?
Arm yourself and learn how to use those firearms in self-defense. In reality, there is nothing you can do. According to their fundamentalist beliefs, they can kill anyone who is not a Muslim without blinking an eye.
Hope this helps Jean. -

We need someone to police the world. They could be called Team America: World Police.
