i get asked point blank if we're witnesses anymore.. and i said "no we're not".

Your post hit home to me. I had no problem letting the kids go see the JW family. Now, after looking at it like you stated in your post, I can see how this sends a message, and not a good one.
My (12 year old) Daughter really loves her trips to see the family though. They are loaded and she always has a great time. So, I am kind of torn, because while I agree with you, taking her yearly trip away would hurt her. We always take the time to explain our position, and the (junk) reasons why they act the way they do. We have two younger children, whom have not had the experience of the JW side, and we can keep it that way for them.

i must say, i enjoyed it.
although it is deeply religious, it is also very interesting.
I just finished reading the novel "The Shack", by William Young. I must say, I enjoyed it. Although it is deeply religious, it is also very interesting. I enjoyed reading the authors take on the Trinity. I would suggest renting it from your library. It only takes 4-5 hours to read it through.
It is kind of neat because some churches love the book, while others hate it. Of course, the WTS would consider it a big no-no.

The point is on this thread that many of us are hurt by the whole shunning deal.
If I believe this right, shunning is supposed to make the shunned ones realize that his error has caused him to miss everyone important to him. How many times does this BACKFIRE? Shunning worked one time for me, I was disfellowshipped, and due to the shunning, I went back and was re-instated. Several years after that, we faded.
Now, our family hardly ever speaks with us. We are not disfellowshipped. They know that we do not go to meetings, and that we have done some "worldly" things. So, they are actively shunning us.
So, we are supposed to be hurt (we are) and clawing our way back to the "truth" (we are not). If anything, we hate the WTS far more than ever! Seeing this treatment is reason enough to Never, Ever go back. It has backfired. No one is better off. Everyone loses.

correct me if i'm not understanding this phrase, 'spirit directed organization'.. my understanding is that the watchtower has recently taught ( someone may remember the exact watchtower that this was taught ) that the anointed and every jehovah's witness has the same holy spirit, no more no less.. nothing special is directing the watchtower society when it comes to understanding the scriptures.

why then do they keep on using this phrase, that they are being directed by holy spirit and still use it when asking one of the baptism questions.. if they have no 'special knowledge', how is it that they write talks about being directed by holy spirit especially when it comes to distrct convention talks.. blueblades.
I am glad this post was started. I was having dinner with my witness in-laws and my faded family. I try to avoid any religious topics, but I had a few beers before we arrived at the restaurant, and was feeling pretty loose. Anyway, somehow the subject came up and I was asking her if she believed that god directs the "organization". A simple question that I thought she would quickly agree with a "yes". Turns out, she said "no". I was taken aback, I must have re-stated it twenty different ways, and she denied it each time. Like, "you don't think god is leading the Watchtower?", and "the governing body does not receive instructions from God?", and on and on. And her answer was repeatedly "no", "I don't know what you've been reading, but no". So we arrive back at their house, and I sneak into their library, to help her understand. I drunkenly scan the big green insight books, and look up Faithful and Discreet slave, and WTF, it backs up her argument! Right in that book, in the FDS part, it brings out how they are NOT direct by God. So, I slip out of there, and have some more beer. : )
I was trying to go down this path. Organization led by God? -> God is never wrong? -> Jesus chooses Organization 1919? -> Beliefs in 1919 way off from current? -> Jesus would not have chosen the Watchtower in 1919? (captives of a concept)
I did not have the resources to find anything quick enough. I must have made an impact, because the next day she was texting me about some elder that would be glad to discuss this. I told her we should drop it, cause I had too many beers. (truth is, I want to keep the peace.)
I should be ready if this comes back up, so I am looking forward to your further posts...

I am not, however, I spoke to my step-father today, and he is going. It will be Friday Saturday and Sunday. I thought it would have been better if they made it Saturday, Sunday and Monday, because of the holiday.
The convention is is a different town than I went to when growing up. He said that there are limited hotels, and the brothers are being asked to drive if they live less than 50 miles from the convention. He said he had the choice to spend a hundred dollars a day on hotels, or on gas, and he chose gas.

when i was a teenager (especially when i wanted out of the org) i made up excuses to miss the meetings.
i always made sure i brought home lots of notebooks, textbooks, etc so it looked like i had a load of homework to do on meeting nights.
i sat on my bed doing my homework (or writing in my journal) just to get out of another night at the meeting (this didn't work on sunday).
I know what you mean, I feel like that too. Now that were out, it really doesn't matter, but when we were in, for so many years, we "had" to go to that crappy little meeting. While I was growing up, our home hosted the BS for many years, which made it even worse.
Our family was the type that had to "study" the lessons before the meeting. So we would have to go through the lesson twice. And, just to make it that much better, our BS seemed to consist of the most Elderly and most Faithful bunch. This means boring, and consistent, week after week. And, if only ONE person showed up for the BS, that meant that the show must go on, and we basically had a second family study, with the addition of one other person, usually a dull, elderly person.
Now that its going away, I too feel "jipped" that now the "faithful" won't have to sit through that crap. I mean, they should have to go to get their ticket to "paradise". The bar is being lowered. Whats next?
