I wonder if this will give a jolt to many who are desperately clinging to the hope that the end will come before they die. It seems the WT is starting to condition that most JW's should hope for a resurection. The "life is short" comment and the idea of looking forward to the afterlife as their future is new to most JW's from our time. Are they ready to accept that leap of faith to continue busting their humps only to be rewarded after death?

When I first read this thread, I mentioned it to my active JW wife and asked her what she thought of this comment. She said she already heard it at her convention in Dekalb, Illinois - so either it was the same speaker or someone who copied off him or it was in the outline.

Hello OTWO
Come to think of it - I beleive you've mentioned before how educated she is. Maybe you can plan a visit to a natural history museum with a focus on the absurdist biblical dates.

I think your admiration is misplaced. Russell didn't "walk out" of his prosperous life to lead people to moral beleifs. Mother Theresa doesn't predicate absolute obedience in order to receive her generosity. Russell wanted a group who thought like he did. Whether or not he beleived he was right doesn't earn him my admiration. Leave your business and join doctors without borders, amnesty international, or any other non-demoninational help group - then you've earned my respect. Help people make this a better world without a quid pro quo of religious belief.

If you claim your decisions are guided by holy spirit, but feel nothing, barely study, and most times see your past decisions were wrong - don't you know in your heart that 'god' is not using you? Aren't you the most reprehensible for continuing to convince people that you are special and being used by god? Does anyone grieve for Jim Jones and claim he was just misled?

Cargo cult celebrates 50th anniversary
by Nathan Natas incargo cult celebrates 50th anniversary residents of the south pacific island of tanna worship an american "messiah" named john frum who first appeared to them in the 1930s.
according to a village elder quoted in a recent smithsonian article, john promised to someday return and "hell bring planeloads and shiploads of cargo to us from america if we pray to him.
radios, tvs, trucks, boats, watches, iceboxes, medicine, coca-cola and many other wonderful things.

This was the subject of a portion of Dawkins' The God Delusion. Interestingly, even though this whole religion appeared and evolved in one generation, there is still confusion as to whether someone named John Frum ever really existed. Also he remarked that another 'Cargo' religion appeared somewhere else in the world around this time, supposedly with no connection to Frum.

I read about a new glass walkway that will jut out over a portion of the canyon so you can see straight down! My son's middle name is Canyon because he was conceived during that trip - so when he's old enough I'd like to go back and and check it out.

My wife & I took this trip pre-children. We flew into Vegas for the cheap airfare, stayed at Treasure Island and took in the Cirque de Solei show as well as the Sigfried & Roy show. Then we rented a Jeep and drove to the Grand Canyon. We had booked a rim side canyon a year in advance. Then we drove back to Vegas via Sedona and stayed in a nice resort. It was a great little art-new age community similar to Aspen or Taos. One of our nicest memories was taking the "hard hat tour" of Hoover Dam while we were in the Vegas area. It is an impressive achievement and worthy of the 1 1/2 hour drive from Vegas.

Contact after 3+ years
by mjarka911 inwell, never say never i guess.
after 3 years of shunning from my hard core jw family - my sister shows up unannounced at my firehouse yesterday to say hello.

Well, never say never I guess. After 3 years of shunning from my hard core JW family - my sister shows up unannounced at my firehouse yesterday to say hello. Although a brief visit - she said she had been driving by my firehouse for 2 years while going to her job and she finally got up the nerve to drop by and say hello. She said she believes "family is family" and she needed to reconnect with me. I don't know where this will lead, but she even said she would like to have lunch soon. It looks like the Borg is losing its grip on her at least. Will wonders never cease? Matt
