Again - thanks for the welcome chrissy and everyone.
tetra - yes and yes. The conference was a multidisciplinary one, but I presented a paper on a topic from my area.Welcome back, judging from your username I thought you lived in Poland.
greendawn,
I do. I went to Boston and I'm back in Poland now, but also back to JWD. So I'm farther away from most posters now, but back posting. That's why I got a welcome. Confusing? ;-)

kls,
Thanks for the welcome - you're a sweet monkey :).
insomaniac,
It's a pity you missed my Boston thread. Would've been nice to meet you! And yes - Harvard is really nice - much nicer than the MIT area, isn't it?

Hey EF,
It's really nice of you to start this welcome thread. I feel a bit embarrassed as I always shy away from public attention :-).
The Boston trip was a great experience. I got some really damp weather at first, but towards the end of my stay the skies cleared up. I can't really imagine how people stand all this humidity there though. Almost like in the Mediterranean countries.
As for sightseeing - I did the whole "freedom-trail" thing. Funny how everything is 'freedom' in Boston. Freedom trail, freedom ships, freedom popcorn (though not exactly free:). I also stepped into the Chinatown area. I stayed in the MIT area so I got a chance to see much of the MIT (including the museum) as well as Harvard.
As for shopping I got an Ipod, but I'll probably have to give it to my younger sister as soon as she sees it :)
Thanks for all the tips.
The overall impression of America was rather positive. The society in the Boston area is really hyper-multi-cultural for someone arriving fresh from Eastern Europe. I mean I've been in many different places before, but never had I seen so many new immigrants in one place. And Burger King tastes much better in the US than in most of Europe :).
The only funny thing was that some even very bright and well educated Americans suffered from the one-directional cultural transfer between the US and the rest of the world. Kind of confirming my stereotype :).
P.S.
My comments on JCannon are 100% serious. Check his posts from around a year ago. He is a textbook example of paranoia. :) You just have to love him for that!

inquirer,
JC is not a witness. You'd better check the guy's post history. He believes to be Jesus Christ incarnated in the body of a drag queen, which in turn relates to the Ethiopian Eunuch story found in the Acts. He claims to have seen the sign of the son of man which pertains to himself, and he's is also meeting the apostle Paul in person (who he claims is alive and to be met at gay bars). He thinks people secretly kneel in front of him to give him glory. He also witnessed the war in heaven personally, talked to Jehovah. There is lots of other stuff abotu JC which makes him a perfect paranoid case with delusions of grandeur, halucinations, seeing secret meanings encoded everywhere and other criteria fulfilled.
Otherwise he seems to be a rather congenial fellow who can 'prove' every little aspect of his messianic mission

Any coloured people here?
by Hellrider innow that i got your attention, here`s a quote from the wt, february 1952:.
"really, our colored brothers have a great cause for rejoicing.
their race is meek and teachable, and from it comes a high percentage of the theocratic increase.

I'm a slightly brownish pink.

That reminds me of "A Passage to India" - great classic by Forster:
"The so-called white races are really pinko-grey."

Which Fits the Facts... Evolution or Creation?
by dorayakii ini recently dug up my old copy of the "creation" book, which i haven't looked at for almost 7 years.
as i was flicking through, i caught a glimpse of the table on page 112 and remembered how at the time it thoroughly convinced me that evolution was not factual...
time and experience has passed, and i now agree more with the evolutionary side of the arguement... so i was thinking of various ways to refute what seemed to me at the time to be water-tight reasoning.

Point 6: "Language contemporaneous with man; ancient ones often more complex than modern."
1) Modern languages are at least as complex as ancient ones (we can't say if they're more complex though).
2) Historical linguistics, which covers the last couple of thousands of years yields very little if any evidence for or against evolution. Historical linguistics can only study 'cultural evolution'. There are other fields of linguistics which deal with the biological evolution of language (by examining the 'languages' of other primates for instance). In any case the WTS writers shouldn't have used this argument.
Instead they should have focused on how Jehoovah miraculously mixed the tounges of men at the Tower of Babel, thus creating a huge mess which later prevented people from understanding the Bible in the 'original' languages. LOL.
