World mobilises to aid US victims
More than 44 foreign governments and international organisations have offered aid to help with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
Sri Lanka and Indonesia, who were recipients of US assistance after the tsunami, were among the list of potential donors.
Cuba and Venezuela put aside their differences with the Bush administration to offer assistance.
The US state department said all the offers were being examined.
Returning a favour
President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela - a major oil exporting country - said he had offered to send cheap fuel.
The state department has not decided whether to accept it.
The United States is so often at the forefront of international aid efforts to help less fortunate nations
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer
Singapore sent Chinook helicopters following a request by the US to Fort Polk, Louisiana, to help to ferry supplies and undertake airlift missions.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wrote to President George Bush offering medical teams, saying they could be ready within 24 hours.
Sri Lanka said it was donating $25,000 (£13,500) to the American Red Cross, while Japan has pledged $200,000 and Australia, $8m (£4.3m), to the charity.
"The United States is so often at the forefront of international aid efforts to help less fortunate nations," Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said.
Developing nations, normally recipients of US aid, offered to become donors, such as Honduras, Guatemala and Jamaica.
The Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA), representing 26 countries, agreed to release the equivalent of two million barrels of oil per day from emergency reserves.
The extra supply is aimed at helping the markets deal more effectively with the disruption caused by Hurricane Katrina, said the IEA.

:The fact that finally the world is sending help is good but why did it take so long!!! Many news reports have said it was not untill we asked the world for help that help has been promised. Many here in the USA feel why did we have to ask for help anyway. Why is simply we wrote our congressmen and demanded that others in the world help because we allway's help them
Skyman, you're spouting complete utter BS again. Help was offered imediately. It was the US state department that was hesitating whether to accept it. That's all Europe waited for for so long: a permission from your government.
I can't believe you have such strong opinions knowing so little.

:WHERE IS THE REST OF THE WORLD NOW THAT WE NEED YOUR HELP? We have our faults but we correct them. THE rest of the world lays at our door and crys when they our help. Let CHINA go after the world like Hilter did and see who you call on to defend you right to hate us!!!!
You'd better quit ranting about WW2 and check the facts.
There's a lot of help coming from Europe in the form of aircrafts, food supplies, medicines and oil reserves. This has been partly discussed on this thread:
http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/14/97505/1675777/post.ashx#1675777
Now I've heard the US has officially asked the EU and NATO for help. This is good. Even Fidel Castro offered you a 1000 doctors and medicines. So, don't rant. Europe and other parts of the world are showing sympathy and support.

Danny,
Gas prices in Europe are twice as high as in the US, but you must have got something wrong. Unless by "driving to work" you meant you're a farmer driving your little tractor to the field and plowing all day long ;-)

Is this true in the UK and Europe?
by Eyebrow2 in.
i heard that in the uk and europe there are more cars that run on diesel.
right now, i think the only new car (not counting trucks, you can usually get a bigger pickup in diesel if you want here) that is usually offered as a diesel is the vw...like the tdi and jetta, here in the us.. the reason i ask, is i am wondering how many of you that have diesel are or would consider using biodiesel, or using waste veggie oil, etc...so that you can cut your fuel expenses?

There's a big 1 billion euro research project currently considered by the EU Comission. Germany, Poland, Czech Rep and other countries are planning to master a technology of obtaining hydrogen from coal. Hydrogen is already used experimentaly as car fuel. Coal is obviously not a renewable resource, but the technology is expected to be very material-efficient.
Let's hope there are more such initiatives in the near future.

Probably, you've heard that diesel cars are becoming even more popular than they used to. This is true according to car-dealer statistics. Still, cars with gasoline engines are more popular, probably because they are 15% cheper than the diesel versions on average.
In some European countries LPG installations are quite popular too, although a lot of Western Europeans look down on them. They're more economic and ecological. I have a VW Polo (2001) which runs on gasoline, but it also has an LPG installation. I only use gasoline when going abroad. In Poland I use LPG 90% of the time.
I save about 5 American bucks per 100km!.
$ 50 per 1000km
$ 500 per 10000km
$ 1750 per 35000km! which is my average annual kilometrage.
The cost of the LPG installation was abour $600.

roybatty,
Either way an individual can be jailed for up to 4 months without having a trial. IMO the right to a fair and speedy trial is a basic freedom.
I don't think the Dutch could get away with Guantanamo even with this opressive law of theirs ;-). And I think the judge's obligatory consent does make a difference. I wonder how often the Dutch system makes use of this law. Ya know there is a state in the US where you may theoretically get jailed for not having a bath for a week, right ;-)Pole, I'm not a lawyer and I don't know what rights are covered by the EU and which ones are covered by national law. The "116 day under Dutch law" was something I saw while watching CNN. I was always under the impression that the Dutch were the more "liberal" minded people, so I was a bit shocked when I heard about this.
And you know how national TVs tend to blow things out of proportions. I'm sure the Dutch are much more liberal than most Europeans and most Americans.Regarding state to state laws, yes, thats sort of true. However, the basic rights of a U.S. citizen (trial by jury, right to speak to an attorney, etc.) are guaranteed by Federal law, not state laws.
There are very few common legal requirements for the EU members in the area of criminal law. One of them is the "no death penalty" requirement. Otherwise things differ a lot from country to country.
Cheers,

:WOW! I don't know how differnt it is from country to country in the EU but it's my understanding that in Holland they can arrest you, throw you in jail and let you sit there for months on end without any charges being brought against you.
And what do you base this understanding of yours on?
It seems like it's a technical difference (judge's decision vs. being charged)
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Joran-van-der-Sloot
Joran can be held without being charged up to 116 days if a Dutch judge determines police authorities have reasonable cause, according to Dutch law.
Also, the Netherlands are a very small part of Europe. Like one state in the US. In most countries you have to be charged within a few days of being arrested. And in any case, I would never say the Dutch justice system in general is stricter than that of America.

JH,
:I love Americans period because they are friendly, their gas is less expensive..lol, they speak english, and I love their way of life and freedom that comes with it.
Ya mean the freedom (not) to smoke pot? I shrink when GW uses this word ;-), but you must mean something else.
Personally, I think if there has to be a world policeman and if it can't be any other Western country because they're wimps compared to te US, then let it be America. It's way, way, way better than China or Russia.
And I like a lot of things about America and Americans too ;-).
