LT - I think your "face" looks a little sinister in the current avatar and slightly reminscent of the beginning bits to the video for Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen!
either that, or he's finally ready to join the dark side...

Which avatars ''appeal'' to you (credit to jt stumbler)
by MidwichCuckoo inafter reading jt stumbler's topic on avatars, i recognised that certain avatars appeal to me, and i'm sure others feel the same.... .

hi mc, i don't have a good sense for posts (at least in english) as i usually unwantedly provoke controversies, but i seem to pick good avatars :-)
when i first registered i had a baphometh avatar with a pentagram... guess it was that good-bye-god phase i was in back then. interestingly that bearded scottish progressive christian uberapostate who announced his disassociation on stage (what's his name again?) liked it.
glad you like mine :-) used it after long desillusionary arguments within my family... -

i need some skeptic input... dreams that come true
by googlemagoogle inlisten to this: the other day my wife was talking in her sleep and she said "sister xyz died".
i just thought, well she's dreaming.
the next day one of my friends told me "sister xyz died yesterday".

great reply abaddon, as always. now noone tell me weed has a negative effect on human brains.
tetrapod, this is an interesting approach, but i'm not sure if it is always applicable. this rule is another version of "the simplest answer usually is the right one" if i understand it correctly. while this is true very often, some things simly are not that simple... however, the more unproven assumptions the less credible, this surely is true.
evilforce, yes it's the matrix. can you get me a red pill? -

The worst thing we can do is come up with complex theological/religious explanations for things we don't quite understand. This is where you may start wasting your life.
this of course is true. there's just this automatic reflex, learned by indoctrination, that makes one connect pure coincidence with supernatural stories.
the first thing i thought was "what if there really are supernatural beings". this thought lasted for almost 3 seconds... scary. -

well, i don't believe in anything supernatural. but there's so much influence from my JW past (and pseudo JW present), urban legends and media, so after events like that you got a lot of "possibilities" to chose from.
for example when i read posts on this board about people experiencing crazy things while performing a ouija session, i sometimes really wonder what to think about it. you know, there's still that little demon the JWs planted in my head when i was a child. -

yeah i was explaining it to me like that too... my grandfather died some weeks ago, so things probably mixed in her dream. it just sounded pretty creepy for the moment. won't change my worldview though until the same thing happens again.

listen to this: the other day my wife was talking in her sleep and she said "sister XYZ died". i just thought, well she's dreaming. the next day one of my friends told me "sister XYZ died yesterday". so i thought, well, maybe someone called my wife and told her, so she dreamed about it. when i came home i told her, did you know sister XYZ died? she said, no what, really?
thing is she didn't know about it. she only knew that sister XYZ was in hospital. now i firmly believe in something we call "coincidence", but this felt a bit confusing...
what do you think about it?
edited to add: that sister is not very close to us. so it's not like she'd think a lot about her or being in sorrow about her. -

Races - where do they come from?
by googlemagoogle inthis one goes out to all the evolution maniacs out there, king james bible bumpers are also welcome to present their view.
even when i still believed in the bible as god's word, i never understood how (at least) three races came from 2 persons.
i sometimes thought, maybe adam was black and eve white, but where does the mongol race come from then?

ah, that's interesting leolaia. human races don't exist, never thought of that but makes a lot of sense. i'm very interested in the multi-origin theorie, because of the neandertal and homo-florensis. do you have any links?
[edited to add:] didn't see your last post. i'll go googling. thanks. -

ok, sorry if i touched some nerve there, as i used a stereotype for all races. thought this would be clear...

well, this is not about racism or ethics, it's about evolution. maybe another question would be: do we all originate from the same animal that lived a few hundret thousand years ago, or did evolution towards humankind take place several times and got all mixed along the way?
