Huge news! Now I think I understand why you said you were going to share "That Voice."
Best,
Confession
when in kenya it becomes clear: obama is very much the rock star here.
when people find out you are an american, they bring him up.
when you discuss politics of any sort, they bring him up.
When in Kenya it becomes clear: Obama is very much the rock star here. When people find out you are an American, they bring him up. When you discuss politics of any sort, they bring him up. T-Shirts, vehicles, banners, bearing his name and likeness are very prevalent. But I got a chuckle while sitting in my wife's sister and brother-in-law's living room a couple of weeks ago. They were watching TV when news of Obama's winning the Nobel Peace Prize was reported. Either they had the all-Swahili station on or the volume was too low for me to hear, so they had to explain it to me.
"Wow. Obama won the Nobel. How nice!" Rachel's sister, Mumbi, said.
There was a long pause. Then her husband, Wachira, said, "But what really has he done?"
Rachel's dad seemed puzzled over it too. Do they love him like crazy here? Yes. Do they consider him their man? Yes. Was he a shoe-in to win the Nobel in some later year? Yes. But for all their love and adulation, some people in Kenya still don't understand why they'd give it to him now.
i haven't been contributing here in some time, probably because so much time went into preparations for our trip to kenya.
i thought some of you might want to read the blog i created to document the trip... you'll see comments and photos of rachel's reunion with her family, our incredible safari at the masai mara reserve, and more.

Thanks for reading. And, yes, my wife is ridiculously gorgeous...

it's an interview from may of 2007, and it's still stream-able.. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyid=10320391.
from his words, he is no neophyte.
check it out..
It's difficult to listen to it. You can hear how he's been caught in the loop most of us were before we looked at all the facts objectively. It's particularly chilling to hear him describe the shunning practice right near the end of the interview...
"Someone makes a choice; they make a dedication that they will live their life a particular way. And...then they walk away from that way. And as a result of walking away from it, it's not them being shunned by the people; they shun the people themselves in their practices. And the sooner someone is willing to make amends in their life, they are welcomed back, you know, with both arms."

so it was time for the 25 year reunion of tawas area high school's class of '84.
because i was class president, i've been responsible for throwing all the reunions we've held.
while i come to michigan on business a few times per year, i don't usually make it all the way up to the little, northeast, lake huron tourist town where they live.
Ann was not terribly far off from where most of us are now...
Once asked her why she thought the FDS was so fearful of us having contact with dis'fed family and she said she believed it was nothing more than a tool of fear.
