  Don't put yourself down mate I don't have an accent where I come from but you would have a beautifull accent over here I'm sure. I guess the fact we hear American accents all the time on TV has the effect of being common to us but it still sounds OK. Giveme your number Ill call you up sometime.

  Gday Ohiocowboy,

  I have been called an 'Australian hillbilly' By Americans in California. I met some Americans in Europe and they invited me to spend my holidays at their place in Los Angelies. They loved my accent and as we drove along the road I was told just to keep talking because they love the sound of my voice. But then they said i sounded like an Ausralian hillbilly. I didn't take offence at that they were nice people.

  I have heard of snake handling but have never seen it practiced. I notice no one actually got bitten at that service. Maybe we should send them an Australian brown snake, one of the most poisonous in the world. There wouldn't be many paritioners after a few months. And these are white people, are they hillbillies ?

  The Anglican diocese here is very casual the priests here dress like everyone else they don't even wear a tie even in church. Its a very evangelical church we go to. Barry

  Going out with a bang

  after much deliberation, i decided to go "out" at the end of a public talk.

  it didn't go down too well, but at least i was able to give some of my reasons for leaving.. i've put some of the details on my homepage.

  Thanks Razziel, Because the SDA church is not much older than the witnesses they dont have a tradition of dressing up. The baptists are much older and for the most part their ministers wear street clothing.

  Perhaps I should explain more clearly where I'm comming from. Maybe I should have titled this post " Are white people cold and unemotional'.

  My Family is of English decent,.heard of the stiff upper lip? Any emotional reaction or affection between males is considered not appropiate. A hug with my own father would be awkward to say the least. Some members of my family have suffered with anxiety probably because of the culture. The question I asked was in the context of my background to a large degree. Someone here has said we can learn from each other and differences shouldn't be used as tools for establish racist positions. I would agree with that.

  America has been a very successful melting pot for all races of people to live in harmony I agree. Australia was behind your great country in this respect because up until the 1970s Australia had the "white Australia policy" that only permitted whites of preferably english stock to immigrate here. That law has since the 1970 has been expunged from our laws and people of all races religions and creeds have come here to frorm a truely harmonious and multicultural society one of the best in the world where the number of interacial marrages is the highest in the world. So we have caught up fast after being way behind.

  Anyway I beleive enough has been said and the reaction was not predicted by me.

  I would like to remind people here of the other question i asked If I could which has been completly ignored.

  For those of you members of churches other than the witnesses. What tradition does the wearing of the cassock and stole as seen on you tube originate? Most churches here are very casual now the SDAs wear a coller and tie as do the Anglicans.

  I don't know why people are inferring that I have racial overtones in what I have posted. I have seen a few movies from the states with gospel choirs such as Sister Act that has a black influence and others Live and let die, very bright joyfull and it seems they all have great moves.

  I have only met three African Americans in my life, one when I visited California and two rappers here in Canberra.
