DID OUR PARENTS REPLACE BIRTHDAY OR CHRISTMAS GIFTS WITH ANYTHING ELSE?
by diamondblue1974 in.
what about it...i know for me i got gifts throughout the year but i didnt get as many as my friends did on their birthdays etc....what about you...do you or did you replace b/days and christmas gifts or celebrations with anything else whilst being a jw and in particular anything as personal....

Never got any replacement xmas gift.
But my mom did secretly go around the birthday bans for about 6 years in a row. The month always varied and the gifts were usually not that expensive, so pop never suspected. But no matter how small, they were ultra cool cuz it was forbidden.
It stopped once we were in middleschool though.

The Moral Bankruptcy of the Governing Body!!!!!!!!!
by frankiespeakin in.
do you feel the gb is morally bankrupt?
to lie to those that put great trust in them is a sign of moral bankruptcy.

I once thought the GB were deluded, maybe even crackpots, but at least they were sincere in wanting to help others. But I no longer have that illusion:
- they equate being judged a sheep (ergo saved) with how well people treat/take care of them materially - What self serving god-complexed power mongers!
- being able to own property was more important than having Mexican publishers use the Bible at the KH - interesting "spiritual" priorities
- even more sickening was the double standard between what was prohibited in Malawi and overlooked in Mexico - Then they even hypocritically become an NGO for the UN.
Whatever reasons people posit for the actions of the GB, I see one common imperative - Their wants and needs take precedence to those of others, and others are just a means to their ends.

DNA - belief destuction
by donkey inthe single largest reason to decimate my belief in jw?s and all biblical faith occurred when i discovered some facts about our cells.
specifically a part of the cell called mitochondria.
mitochondria are sometimes described as "cellular power plants" because their primary purpose is to manufacture adenosine triphosphate (atp), which is used as a source of energy that the cell uses.. as humans one inherits one?s mitochondria only from one's mother, this finding implies that all living humans have a female line of descent from a woman whom researchers have dubbed mitochondrial eve.

Thanks for mentioning that study on the CD4 sequences. And I agree that chromosal DNA is a preferable for these studies. When you have historical incidences like the Black Plague or who knows what else, bringing genetic bottlenecks into the mix, its nicer to have a larger selection of markers to work with. It allows for plausible outlining of human migration patterns out of Africa which is also interesting.

Evidence from mitochondrial DNA sequencing also suggests African origins for our species. There's a greater number of sequence variations among people of African descent than among other ethnicities like Europeans for instance. Fewer sequence variations implies less time has passed for mutations to accumulate, and a greater number of changes implies a longer history for that line. So the molecular evidence supports the paleontological evidence for our ancestors coming from Africa.
Here's a side point on mitochondrial DNA, and the mitochodrion itself, that also has a bearing on evolution vs. creation. Why does that organelle have its own distinct DNA anyway? The DNA is circular to boot, very much like bacterial plasmids. The DNA in the rest of our cells is linear and at certain stages are packaged as chromatids/chromosomes. The mitochodrion (and chloroplasts in plants- which also have their own circular DNA) are about the size of typical bacteria and double-membraned. This has led to the hypothesis that mitochodria (and chloroplasts) were originally separate bacteria and they entered symbiotic relationships with other cells, eventually evolving to the more familiar eukaryotic animal (or plant) cells we're familiar with. Neat stuff to contemplate.

At around 19, I understood what I was doing. I actually enjoyed contemplating religious beliefs and story telling, but I never felt a deep certainty for any of them. I saw everybody around me, either JW or RC, being happy in their "spirituality" so I sincerely thought, I'd give this a try. Now I knew alot of the doctrinal errors from reading some of Penton's stuff, but I thought they were just good-intentioned but deluded people. So I decided to personally and quietly attribute my own meanings to the concepts of Organization and Spirit Directed and try being more religious.
Put aside the mistaken details and focus on the more important heart of it - I told myself. That was my mistake. I was really trying to deny who I was...I instead was focussing on trying to change my own lack of heart. I should have seen that there really wasn't any heart in the movement either.

What obligation do you feel towards your family who are still in?
by czarofmischief ineverybody's situation is different, of course, and everybody has their own choices to make.. but do you recall that when we were dubs, we were constantly urged to go out in service, because people needed to hear what we thought was the truth?
they would use that scripture by paul, "i consider myself a debtor to all men" etc.
to enforce the moral compulsion to go door to door.. now that we know the truth about the truth; how obliged are we to tell our family?

If the Organization were just another typical mainstream religion, then I would try to discuss it casually once, and if it met with negativity wouldn't bother again. No Big.
But I feel that this cult is an overly-parasitic structure, so I do feel obligated to talk about it with the ones I love (which for now is just my immediate family). They made so many sacrifices for me.
I've shared with my sib practically everything I've learned, but since her taking JWs seriously, she gets very defensive and loud. She's always calling me a "hypocrite" for being an "apostate" but not DAing myself. She chooses to "wait on Jehovah". She still treats me pretty much the same as always though and has never, nor do I believe will she ever, "out" me. Bless her heart (or her strong sense of darwinian kinship ).
I've shared my doubts with my Mom for almost as long as I've had them, because for at least 2/3 of my life she wasn't a JW. But she converted (strike two ) and she hasn't wanted to talk about any of it since she delved in.
My Dad, is the hardest to talk with. I've given up because he won't just shut me out but goes on a rather agitated offensive to defend the "Truth" and it never ended well.
Long story short, I struck out 3 times, so I'm settling for a quiet "fade" for now, to keep the channels open with them and hopefully something may change in the future.

I'm glad that made ya smile. Being close to the Great Lakes, my avian nemesis is the seagull. I got hit twice by those buggers at the most embarrassing of times. Once in my mid teens, at a nice conservation area (Christie's near Hamilton), with my cousin and a mix of his cool and hot friends witnessing it. Another time in my mid twenties, at Canada's WonderLand (a theme-park north of Toronto) with some JWs - that wouldn't let up on it for the rest of the day.
I really hope the arrhythmia turns out to be a temporary sitch, or at least nothing serious. Do you like eating fish? Here's an abstract you might find interesting:
omega3 fatty acids in the prevention-management of cardiovascular disease
Simopoulos A.P.
A.P. Simopoulos, Center Genetics, Nutrition and Hlth, 2001 S Street N.W., Washington, DC 20009 USA
Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (Canada), 1997, 75/3 (234-239)Epidemiologic studies show that populations who eat fish versus those who do not have a reduced death rate from cardiovascular disease. Experimental studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids affect the function of cells involved in atherothrombosis in numerous ways, including the modification of eicosanoid products in the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, the reduced synthesis of cytokines and platelet-derived growth factor, and alterations of leukocyte and endothelial cell properties. Intervention studies in patients with restenosis, myocardial infarction, and cardiac arrhythmias with omega-3 fatty acid supplementation have been addressed in several clinical studies. The ingestion of omega-3 fatty acids following one episode of myocardial infarction appears to decrease the rate of cardiac death. These effects of omega-3 fatty acids appear to be due to their antiarrhythmic properties. In fact, fish oil has been shown to reduce ventricular arrhythmias and to be more beneficial than currently used pharmacologic agents. The dose, duration, and mechanisms involved in the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease following omega-3 fatty acid ingestion or supplementation need to be investigated by double blind controlled clinical trials.
