  i made a statement to tec, that paul did not know jesus.

  in fact i challenge anyone to show from his writings, that he knew about the christ presented in the gospels.

  i believe it is fair to say the lord or christ of paul is only mentioned as a spirit being who was ressurrected for us.

  So maybe there was no Jesus- or maybe there was- what does it matter?

  The way I see it, (as an agnostic and practically faithless), any better understanding of how and why religious beliefs and myths develop can give us insight into the human psyche. Hopefully we can use that knowledge, not simply to destroy religious institutions, (although I wouldn't be upset to see a certain Brooklyn based group disappear), but to address the fears, hopes etc of most people in the here and now in a way that fits with our current world. Maybe there'd be a little more peace in this world. Then there's just the part of me that's obsessed with "origins".

  You make a good point about there being many christians before Paul came onto the scene. But John, even from early tradition, was said to be written decades after Paul (in the 90s). No doubt christians had oral traditions of different sayings of Jesus that likely were incorporated into the Gospels. But elements like the accurate prediction of the destruction of the Temple point to later times of writing.

  Some of MP's points of contention remind me of ideas from authors like Acharya S. That the Jesus story was entirely mythical, and based on the Sun and the Zodiac. Maybe thats why he's stressing a non literal understanding of the Twelve.

  Now I certainly acknowledge the amount of myth and fabrication thats gone into the Gospels, but I think there was an actual Galilean preacher that served as the basis for the earliest, and very Jewish, Jesus Movement. Paul just had a different take on the meaning of Jesus' death, and came up with a more marketable hybrid cult which drew heavily on both Jewish elements and of the pagan mystery religions.

  Ok, the passage in Galatians doesn't have any bearing on whether Paul knew Jesus or not. I believe a few of us quoted it in response to your own statement that seemed to imply that Paul never even came into contact with the apostles. Paul himself said he did meet with at least two "pillars".

  Again, I'm not saying Paul taught the exact same message of Jesus, except maybe the idea that the escatological end was very near.

  I don't think they were two separate religions to begin with. I think Paul did try to associate himself with the earliest Jesus followers but more with the attitude that he was a newly chosen apostle and was given more critical revelations that everyone should know.

  Paul did say in his letter to the Galatians, that he eventually met some of the apostles, but only very briefly. Mind you, he didn't think too highly of them. He flatly says they didn't impress him much. I'd say he had an antipathy towards the "so called pillars" or leaders of the Jerusalem Community, and co-opted the movement.

  There's no way to say for sure that Paul ever met the human/historical Jesus. My hunch is that he never did meet him and likely didn't care much about what the earliest apostles had to say about Jesus.

  He makes claims of being granted revelations and appearances directly from the being he calls the heavenly Christ, including what transpired at the Last Supper. But not everything he taught was created entirely by him, since a couple of his letters seems to include already accepted christological hyms or statements of faith. ( 1 Corinthian 15:3-7, Phil 2: 6-11)

  Unintentionally, or not , he most certainly mutated the early Jesus movement into something more like Myth-raism.

  I love those trail mixes with a variety of dried fruits.

  Prosciutto, but with those ultrathin bread sticks made with olive oil would make for decent finger food.

  someone who works at a college locally, pointed out to me that one of their scholar students was stocking shelves at a dollar store.. with this recession, are you finding that higher learning is wasting time?

  i know that it's necessary to become a dr. or a lawyer, but, with the shortage of work, even teachers are working as secretarys.. what do you think?.
