what are some of things you were deprived of as a jw kid that were not all that bad??
i remember when other kids would say 'cross your heart or hope to die' as an act of truthfulness.
i don't know the origin...but it seemed harmless enough.

I do remember the chess game rule being declared a war game come to think of it...I guess that means Metal of Honour play station game is out then.

we have had some pretty amasing classic comedy in britian over the years.. faulty towers, the office, alan partridge,ali g etc.mind you weve had some very crap sit-com 2.4 kids etc.. who does it better the brits or the yanks?.
sorry ozzies cant think of any from down under.

I didn't know that about checkers...my mum let that one slip through because we used to play it I always wanted to play Dungeons and Dragons
'knock on wood' or 'touch wood'...yeah me too.
Ring of rosie was another one...it was supposed to have something to do with witch craft or superstitious omens. I still played it...ignorance is bliss.

I don't know the origin...but it seemed harmless enough. But not for us kids...we were never allowed to say it, because Jesus didn't die on a cross don't ya know. So secretly, I used to say it, but I would only do the downward vertical stroke down the chest, and not the horizontal stroke across...how silly was that...but I felt like I wasn't being completely wicked this way.
As time went on I used to 'compromise' with my conscience on other things, like saying "have a happy new year" whenever someone would wish me a merry xmas. I hadn't actually wished them a merry xmas...but it was as close as I could go.
Did you have moments in life where you weren't quite crossing over the borderline into the 'forbidden' zones - but you sort of 'hovered'??

even though i'd accumulated 20 years of doubts and disappointments, i fought my last dfing tooth-and-nail.
if they hadn't dfd me, i'd still be "in" mentally and psychologically.
heck, i was still "in" for another year and a half after, even though i thought i was out.

I have to agree Craig, it was this forum that taught me the truth about the truth...as well as reading the COC book. But overall...knowing that you're not the only one out there helped me get over a lot of my personal issues.

they look like ciggies, they even taste like ciggies, but they smell like horse poop.
hell i don't care...they'll do me.. i've been off smokes for 2 years...but had a terrible craving (stress related) and so i surrendered to the craving and had a few drags of a peter jackson number 8...then i had another...and another.
i had some crazy thoughts about buying a packet.
Herbal ciggarettes...they can help you through your darkest hour without causing an addiction.

ps...reporting in: I have only had 3 herbal cigarettes since buying the packet. The first one was because of a genuine craving, the second and third was because they were there. *smacks self on hand, twice, no, thrice*
one of my favorite things to do when i'm not getting carpel tunnel, is going to movies.
of course that could also be because there are limited activities here in wichita.

I love movies too...and I love reading books and then watching the movie.
Last week I took my 12 year old to see Hot Chick...that was a good show if you feel like some light entertainment. I saw Ghost Ship recently...I wasn't terribly impressed with it...a bit of a strange story...but I'm not one for blood and guts.
I watched Dragon Fly on DVD the other day, that was quite good, not great, but okay. I didn't think much of The Majestic, you have to be in the mood for a slow movie before you watch that one. And I saw Snow Dogs...your typical Disney show...pretty far fetched story line, but a good kids show. I'm a bit too long in the tooth for Disney shows now
If anyone makes any movies based on Wilbur's books, I'd surely be interested cos Danielle Steele movies are so suckie!!

i was just wondering if anyone on this site has been reinstated as a jw after having been disfellowhipped or disassociated from the watchtower society for "apostasy"?
if so, would you mind telling us what it was like for you to go through the "process" of reinstatement after having "seen the light" <smile!> about the organization?
I believe you can be reinstated for just about anything...so long as you've mastered the art of lying.
You can also avoid being DF if you say the right things...regardless of how you feel inside. So much for holy spirit directing the elders huh. Its about how you put yourself across (ie. repentant or not) rather then how you personally feel.
I have seen liars smothered with love and affection by the elders and cong members because of their ability to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.
I used to get sick of hearing 'wait for Jehovah to fix things up...don't go ahead of Jehovah'...bah!!
