Anybody make New Year's resolutions/have cabbage, black-eyed peas, etc?
by Frannie Banannie in.
i don't know where the tradition came from, but down here in the south, it's traditional to eat cabbage, black-eyed peas, ham....and since cornbread seems to go so well with it...heh....wonder what it means....i know the cabbage is for luck with money in the new year, but not sure about the rest.. anyone else make any new year's resolutions?.

I considered a few, but I think I would be setting myself up to fail on them
I think mine will be to read the Bible more...(not the Witnesses' version!!)

You know, when I was your age I was as naive and foolish as you. So, there is hope.
Another miracle is how before I became a Christian I would have felt the need to insult you back

AlmostAthiest,
I could give you reasons, but you already said you don't believe those ones.
Here are a few things right off the top of my head. They are not mostly the reasons that I believe in God, but they sure help (me anyway).
This may sound familiar, (The Witnesses actually told me this) and I can't remember exactly where it was in (their) Bible so I suppose I could be wrong on this, but I remember a verse where the Bible actually said the earth is round, whereas humans didn't actually discover that for a while...
My Christian Grandma watched a documentary...where Moses was supposed to have divided the sea and walked through with all the people. There is a video of cameras going under the sea and actually seeing tons and tons and tons of carriages and other things under the water there where they settled after the sea closed in on the army. (If you are interested in this at all, I will ask her what the video is called and where to find it. I would like to see it too.)
Miracles....things that COULD be explained by sceptics....it all comes down to how much you do or don't want to believe. Little things that have happened to me or my family. I was just telling a few people in the chatroom last night how my parents and I took a vacation to WI last summer. My mom and I were driving back from an Indian reservation in the middle of nowhere on the highway when all of a sudden the back hitch to our van popped open, and she pulled over to close it. Right when we were pulled off the highway, the drivers side gasget broke in half. The only thing really holding the wheel up at that point was the weight of the van resting on it. The policeman who drove us back to the cabins said that if we had been driving it wouldn't have turned out too well. It has never before or after popped open on it's own like that while we were driving. We hadn't even opened it that day at all.
How about all the prophecies?? It's amazing to me how right on they all are. I was reading the Bible the other night about end times prophecies. It mentioned that people would be perplexed by "strange tides." I think that applies very well right now.
That's just some stuff off the top of my head...

Lying to someone on their deathbed...
by mkr32208 inis it wrong?
they are going to be dead soon right?
does it matter what we tell someone who's dying?

Here's the case in point suppose someone is halfway through the ol' bucket kick and they ask you to promise to raise their great-grandkids (your kids) as witlesses so they will see them in the new system...
I guess in that case you just say whatever makes the person feel better.

RE: SASSY'S PLEA FOR HELP WITH TSUNAMI DISASTER
by azaria inconvince me that i'm wrong.
i am extremely disappointed with the response.
but the same thing happened during the crisis in the caribbean (haiti etc) a few months back.

Azaria,
I can understand how you would feel like this...because it's a completely heartbreaking situation.
There are alot of reasons people didn't respond much, I imagine. Maybe they don't know what to say, or maybe they did donate and know that's all they can do, or maybe they are in a situation where it is impossible for them to donate and they feel guilty and sad about it. All some people can do is pray for the poor people, and hope that their suffering did not last long. Unfortunately that is all I can do right now, and I am sure that is the situation alot of other people are in right now, too. Doesn't mean their hearts didn't break over it, though.

I didn't love God enough to stop smoking
by embeth2525 inyesterday, i went to visit my friend, who is the jw that i was studying with and i told her about the problems i had had with the other congregation i had been in before.
i told her about how they had treated me not so very nice and how i had a terrible time, then quitting cigaretts.
i wasn't able to quit smoking back then, although i have since quit about 3 years now.

Some might disagree with this, but I am convinced that the addiction to smoking is at least 99% physical. Researchers are more and more starting to agree that any addiction (including smoking), is directed by a part of our brain, just like walking, talking and anything else.
I COMPLETELY AGREE with that.
I can tell you that whenever I try to stop smoking, I am almost incapable of doing anything else that is directed by a part of my brain!!!
I get completely confused and can't think straight, my mind races and head spins so bad that I end up in tears.
I wasn't able to quit smoking back then, although I have since quit about 3 years now.
Very happy for you! You must be a very strong and determined person. It's rough. ((HUGS)) and good for you!! -

Personally, I think smoking is a medical problem due to the fact that it is an addiction. And that it has nothing to do with how much you love God.
I totally agree with ya there. I smoke and am a Christian. (of course the JW's wouldn't think so)
