I don't get it....
i'm awake...and that's the least of what's wrong with me
war is hell !
that is the basic premise.
the blood, the gore, the fear, the dead, and those who will be.. as the united states of america goes deeper into the war on terror, a crusade of its own, as it were, there seems to be an unending response of those, willing to risk losing thier lives for the sake of something far larger and greater than themselves.
Well, I'm just going to throw out my opinion hear. I as you stated
There is a morbid romanticism that comes with war.
It's not only culture (in my opinion) but a human need to see what we can endure and live through. The thing is we also have self preservation and also the capacity to not take everything fed to us by our government and media.
As far as WWll goes, Kurt Vonnegut was a veteran of that war and still thinks it was wrong. Read Slaughter House 5. I think the veterans of WWll seemed bigger and better than those of the following wars because media has claimed they are bigger and better. Maybe that generation was made stronger because of the childhood they endured during the depression? Have you ever seen The Straight Story? It's not about WW2 but there's a scene where the lead character (a vet) stops in a bar and talks to another WW2 vet--it's heart wrenching.
I think there are some people serving right now that are proud of serving and are strong people but I've known one Iraq vet who killed himself on leave last year and another that returned in June that just isn't the same person. He was always telling me to smile and now all he does is start fights with strangers and talk about death.
does anyone else remember horror stories about the great tribulation and what they would do to the witnesses etc.. i remember this being the big topic of conversation for years, then like lots of jw doctrine, they quietly swept it out of the arena, and now it's never mentioned.
i remember pioneering with a girl who couldn't sleep at night and kept praying she'd be strong enough to endure it!
i actually have a talk on tape from a member of the gb where he spoke about ministers swinging from lamposts.. gruesome or what!!
mmm...well, I'm not sure that they don't use it now. BUT I do remember the stories from when I was a kid.

I keep trying to read the article but then my browser shuts down.....
Rhink I'm going to have to cut & paste and get back to you LDH.
hello boys and girls, how's it hanging?.
i have been drowned in a world of work since some point in october and have been gadding around europe on business - netherlands-uk-netherlands-romania-netherlands-france-and back home to holland again.
what started off as me being too busy to read and post became simply not being bothered enough to read or post - not that you're not all wonderful people (albeit some in very a window-lickingly special way), and of course "da bord" serves a great role in helping dubbies decompress from cultville as well as giving a nice forum for argumentative gits.
HAHA- Abaddon, that's hilarious and so true...and I think I'm one of the guilty parties when it comes to certain threads.
I don't doubt at all there's fallout. My thinking is that the JWs hit hard and not helped by the WTS are feeling the same thing non-JWs that were hit hard and not gwtting help from the US government. All leads to fallout whether it be the WTS or the Bush Administration.
hey i keep forgetting but its my birthday tomorrow!.
18th november i will be the big 30 (and i look about 11!).
i really wanted tobe completely open and celebrate it properly i never dreamt i'd be still in the position of living a double life and hiding my true feelings from my family (see my other thread).
Well first of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY
I guess by the first holiday that I celebrated it felt like a wieght off. This isn't to say it's the same for everyone. I was not baptized and still a teen celebrating for the first time.

live in concert that is ... brilliant .
can't remember the playlist but he did some real classics from the entire range of his recording career.. now, i only have to see girls aloud and have them bring elvis back from the alien base and life will be complete
cool, did he do "it aint me babe?" I loved that Scorcese documentary about him.
Thanks for the input. I guess I'm not really a social darwinist. I can see where you are coming from with your second point but I don't see that kind of nobilty taking place these days. The civil rights era showed what you describe, but today I just don't see it.
