  a week and a few days ago, we had a big event for the charity i work on.

  with just 40 percent of our building working on it, we managed to raise 20 thousand dollars worth of money and supplies for a free clinic here in texas.

  it is to air on tv maybe this next monday.

  This is sooo cool! I'm with you...if I could afford to volunteer full-time, I'd do it. One of my favorites is Ronald McDonald House. Maybe sometime we could organize something from this board for the local RMH? Just thinking out loud here...

  It's also true that if we volunteer from the heart, in the spirit of true altruism, we end up getting benefits as well. The joy of giving (and I don't mean things) is highly underrated. When we are having a rough time, and stretched emotionally/financially, nothing does more to lift the spirits than volunteering. At least, that has been my experience.

  So true! Giving without expectation of return is one of the most freeing things I experienced after my exit from the cult. As a JW, you never really learn to give without expectation of return. If there isn't a return, you just don't do it. Sad really when you think of it.

  I'M HOME

  i'll have to make this brief because it's getting late.. i've had my first batch of chemotherapy and thus far everything feels fine!

  thank you so much for all the cards (and some presents, too!!!).

  forgive me for not thanking all of you individually but i have received a good number.

  Lying

  beware.. i am basically a trusting person.

  that has cost me a lot in my life.. lately i have been caught by two lies that had bad effects on my life.. the first set of lies was told to me by a friend about a mutual friend.

  There are few things in this world that I "hate", but liars is one of them. Not the "white" lies that are sometimes necessary to carry on etiquette - "You look great in that outfit!", but the type that have agendas - "Yes, I was a Navy fighter pilot for 6 years before I moved to Wichita and settled down as a window washer." I just can't stand being deceived. Maybe it's because of the religion. Maybe it's because I've lied and I see the harm it causes. I don't know. I just know I have little tolerance for it. I do try to see a person's motivation for lying, which helps me have more empathy for what they do. I might call them on it, but sometimes that bites me in the butt too.

  All that to say, I do everything possible to be as honest as possible in everything I do or say. Even if it means I hurt feelings or am in the minority.

  one of the most difficult things for ex-jehovah's witnesses (heretofore referred to as ex-jws) to deal with is the loss of friends and family -- "loved ones.

  " rejection hurts, and the pain seems to be very intense for some.

  ex-jws seem validated to feel so awful since most humans naturally believe that love is a human need.

  A good look at their brains will find them grossly underdeveloped compared to their mates who were loved, cuddled, and coooed at.

  So if you say that these things are desires and not needs, then is my need to eat chocolate a need or a desire? What about my need for a Guiness? Need or desire?

  True. Physical needs are shelter, warmth, air, food, and water.

  If we are going to reach our true psychological potential, we need love to do that.

  Rebel, you bring up a good point. We are evolved creatures that are heads and shoulders above just the typical animal. THEY have physical needs and typically that's sufficient for them to live to their potention. But human needs are different. We have a physical, mental and emotional potential. What about true emotional potential? I find some people that are very psychologically intelligent are rather emotionally immature. Perhaps love or allowing themselves to be loved would help them grow?
