Hated...

The Full Monty - I sat and rewound that damn thing a million times trying to understand what they were saying - and that was just in the first 10 minutes. I finally got frustrated and turned it off.
Waterworld - I know, I know, it had Kevin Costner in it, I shoulda known. (I think I thought he was good just because of Field of Dreams and Bull Durham. I was wrong.)
Eyes Wide Shut - Ugh. Awful. Considering the subject matter, I should've known not to go.
Matrix - any of them - they were all bad.
Showgirls - I'm glad I'm not the only one that hated this.
American Beauty - I think I was disappointed because of the all mega-hype about how wonderful it was.
Fargo - another disappointment as I'm a pretty decent Cohen brothers fan.

Taking back my lawn

my family spends a lot of time on grooming our lawn, hedges and flowerbeds.

we live near a main street and there is a path beside our house that is often used by dog owners as part of their dog walk.. i don't know how many times i've watched people allow their dogs to urinate on our hedges and defecate on our grass, when the public park is just a few feet away.

they think that poop-n-scooping is the limit of their duty of neighbourliness.. today, i had enough.

Our neighbors have a cat that is the neighborhood bully. I've found him many times in our (6 foot tall!) fenced yard attacking MY pets. I've sprayed him with our water hose and he runs yowling home. It seems to work. Last summer I chased that stupid thing over our fence with a broom since I couldn't get the water on fast enough. My neighbor was sitting on the back porch watching me. She hollered, "I'd appreciate it if you didn't terrorize my cat." I said, "I'd appreciate it more if you'd keep it off my property. I have every right as a property owner to do WHATEVER necessary to prevent it from trespassing again." I paused and stared at her with a huge smile. Her eyes got wide and she grabbed her cat and stormed inside. I don't really see that cat around much anymore.

I'm fine with any neighborhood animal until they start attacking MY babies on MY property. Then the gloves come off. LOL

Gosh, I can only imagine if this were my child!

If I were addressing my earthly father, I would not ever call him by his personal name. I would know it, respect it, and have deep regard for the importance of it to my earthly father. But I would never use it in personal address.

Same here. I have a closer relationship to God now, than I ever did before in my life. When I pray, I say "Heavenly Father". I remember the one time I called my dad by his first name. I was quickly shut down from doing that again. LOL! Honestly, I think it's disrespectful for a child to do that.

"Josh, you see these letters here inside the front of the book? These letters are the Library of Congress code that identifies the genre of the book in case you are ever undecided what section it belongs in. For example, Romance is "G", History is "L H", the Bible is "BS"...."

I blurted out: 'IT CERTAINLY IS"

I think I mentioned it in another post somewheres, but I can't find it now. But several years ago, as I was purchasing door prizes for an Apostofest (at Half Price Books), I found a New World Translation in the "Religious Fiction" section. I found that too humorous to NOT mention at the Fest that night. Everyone got a good roar out of it!

They call themselves Christians, but are very vague about what it means to be a Christian (or at least very simplistic about their approach).

What most people don't understand is that being a Christian is very simple. "Love God with your whole heart, soul, and mind; Love your neighbor." If we followed those two rules, then doctrine doesn't matter. Everything falls under those two rules. Seems pretty simple to me. Why get caught up in whether your shirt must be white at the Sunday meeting or whether you drive a two door or four door car? Where in the bible does it say those type of rules must be followed? But many people don't like it being that easy, thus the millions of rules that different religions have. Many of today's Christianity is no different than the Pharisaical teachings of Jesus day. They are so wrapped up with following the letter of the law, they completely lose the spirit of the law.

Honestly...it's not that complicated.

Sometimes I wonder how a fervent believer would feel if, in response to their declaration that they will pray for me, I responded with "Why thank you! And I will sacrifice a goat to Satan on your behalf too!" After all, if that were my belief system, and that was how I showed my concern for people, why would they be offended? Isn't that what they believe they are doing for me?

Hey! There'll be NO GOAT sacrificing around here!!! I dunno...lately, I've felt a little burned on the fringes.

You bring up a good point. I think from here on out, instead of just offering prayers as a gift, I'll ask if it's okay to offer my prayers as a gift. But then are you supposed to ask permission when you give a gift? It is my decision and it's not doing any harm. What if they say it's okay to give a gift, but only if it's a certain thing? Is it still a gift? Or then an obligation?

If I ever say, "I'll pray for you", it's NEVER meant in a derogatory way. It's always meant as a way of saying I'll do everything in my power to help spiritually. And if there's a way I can help physically, then I'll offer that too. When a pagan says they'll light a candle, is that as offensive when you're not a pagan?

IMO, sometimes us JWs are overly sensitive to people's genuinely innocent and good intents.

If I remember correctly from my friend who's been to Ecuador, the Andean guinea pig is NOT the typical American Guinea Pig we're used to seeing as household pets. It's actually a staple of the typically poverty stricken Andean diet and supposedly tastes like chicken. They look a bit like rabbit to me, not that that makes it better.

i have been reading a lot here and there the past year about humanism, etc...and i am curious who else on this board that have left jwism has gone that route?.

it took me a few years, but this is where i am at now, and i have been looking into local groups in my area (dallas, tx) that meet together.

i will probably be going in september when the next meeting is.
