What was wrong with the 'occultic green' bibles?
by Gill inwhat was wrong with the 'green bible'?.
i understand (rightly or wrongly) that the 'green' had occult connotations that some did not approve of.. is this true and were the early jws too involved with hidden, esoteric, occult meaning that 'others' found uncomfortable and so they had to go to the sobre black bibles?.

WAsn't Russell's 'Comments on the Scriptures' or whatever they were also green. I recall seeing them in my parents 'upstairs' dubbie library along with some of the other 'classics'. Green was popular in the early days of the WT society. I think there is more to it than cheap vinyl.

Satanus - Well the JW bible is not like the other bibles so I suppose spew green, bought at an extra cheap price may well have been an attractive offer!
My mother insists on still using her 'green bible' even though some elders have made subtle hints that she should buy a new one.
However, as Blondie points out, the translation may have had 'spiritual' assistance but the colour........I still remember the comments on that.
I will try to find out about 'the green'. I just thought someone might know more about this.

I forgot to say that this green colour was pointed out to me many times during my 35 years of being a dubbie by people on the doors.
They found it strange that I didn't understand what was so bad about having a green bible.
'Don't you understand where your bible comes from?' was something I remember being asked many times but thought nothing of it except that these people must be 'friends of Satan'!

Fjtoth - But this was during the 'reign' of Knorr?
Rutherford to all intents and purposes, appears to have been a 'phoney' through and through. It is more feesible to consider that he 'might' be capable of such unpleasantness. It was during his 'reign' that women were described amongst the Witnesses as a 'hank of hair and a bag of bones', was it not. Such an unpleasant charactar as Rutherford, might well have concealed many unfortunate ways. But still interesting that you reveal that the 'neighbours' thought of the Bethel as having a brothel in former times.

Fjtoth - Very interesting. You were not there during Rutherford's reign, were you? Was it just during Knorr's?
I wonder why the locals held that idea.
Certainly it's something I heard of a few years ago when I was originally looking into Watchtower origins and it's just reminded me when I read this article on freeminds.
