for me, it was two things:.
a high school teacher asked me, "does it make sense to you that god thinks that the people at your kingdom hall are better christians and more worthy than say....mother theresa?".
Okay, good question. As much as I resent my not-JW-dad-who-neverthless-supported-my-jw-mom-and-forced-us-to-do-all-the-JW-stuff...my husband pointed out to me that, through his ridicule, and constantly challenging JW beliefs during dinner time, etc, he was planting the seeds of descent.
I believe my husband is right. IMO, my father was far to subtle, but, he did force me to think in different ways.

Really? I know Washington used the phrase "under god" liberally, but not the way you think of it today, connected to or referencing our "nation". Do you have citations?
Really, yourself. Do you think that these great leaders did NOT believe in God. Did not think that at some level they were divinely directed. YOU sight some souces on their supposed atheism and shunning of the "one nation, under god" doctrine.

To say that having a street address changed is an inconvenience is stupid. Where I used to live, if items of mail have the pre-MLK street address on it, people still got their items delivered by the postal service(even 20 years after the name change).
Oh, and just totally ignore any information presented here to the contrary. This whole subject is stupid. To suggest that anyone who just doesn't bend over and say "SURE" to any changes made without their vote are in fact "racist" is stupid.

What, flippin' "good ol' days?" I'm fairly young, as are the rest of us. Sorry you're getting flashbacks of civil rights marches...that was way before my time. You cannot seem to comprehend that shoving impractical methods to "honor" people down other's throats is as much a violation of "rights" as was ever done to anyone else. There are FAR better ways to honor people than to insist that street names be change, than to insist that people now must celebrate a particular person's birthday. I highly resent the "racist" implications just because someone doesn't fall in line with your particular belief of what's right and wrong.

Actually, I've been hearing the under the rules of the Geneva Conferences, you are allowed to 1) question the POW while naked; 2) Use sleep deprivation and stress to get POWs to talk; 2) use forms of humiliation to get information from POWs.

The phrase "moral clarity" is a religious right phrase. What it means is: The President is a born again Christian who in his personal deliberations with his conscience gives Christ the top place in his life. This produces a moral clarity which positively influences all his decisions both personal and professional.
Here's a suggestion: get a dictionary. Then you'll find that "moral clarity" has nothing to do with religiousity. You don't seem to understand that ETHICAL, MORAL behavior doesn't have to be wrapped up in some "born again" Christianity.
Translation: Whatever the man does is from God and therefore since it is from God the man cannot make a mistake. Therefore no mistakes in his policy need to be acknowledged because none were made.
You are make such a comical illogical leap. You seem to be suggesting that people cannot determine "right from wrong" outside of the confines of "God's guiding me." Very telling.

Indeed, let's remember that the behavior of a few doesn't reflect the entire nation/culture. Would that people remember that when they try to pontificate about the Iraqi POWs. This supposed "outrage" that somehow represents all Americans doesn't feel so good when the shoe is on the other foot...

for those of you who are x bethelites, why did you choose to go to bethel?.
was it because of you love for jehovah, or to get away from your home town and live in new york, or some other reason?
My Dad used to sit at the dining room table and admonish my sisters not to bother with any man unless they were Bethelites. "Why get a bologna sandwich when you can get steak instead?" He would say.
Oh right. "Steak" equals a man who makes $20 a month, lives in the equivalent of a dorm; is basically a slave to the borg by offering them hard work for board & feed. And if you marry him and they let you stay, YOU'LL be doing household chores for others making pennies....yeah, that's "steak" alright.
I had the "opportunity" of visiting a couple who were related to someone in our congretation while I was back in NY. Nice people. But I remember thinking (even then) "how can they live like this?"
They were really a cute, bubbly couple. (Later they divorced, and both left the JWs).
