"What, then, should we expect to take place? The chief thing to be restored is the human race to life; and since other Scriptures definitely fix the fact that there will be a resurrection of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and other faithful ones of old, and that these will have the first favour, we may expect 1925 to witness the return of these faithful men of Israel from the condition of death , being resurrected and fully restored to perfect humanity and made the visible, legal representatives of the new order of things on earth." "Playing Chess is evil, not for Witnesses" -Awake 1973
by Witness 007 inawake 73 3/22 p.12 "....the spirit of competition between players can lead to unpleasant circumstances, as the new york times reported: most families manage to keep the conflicts that arise in games to the chess board.
but in some homes tensions linger long past checkmate.
chess has been a game of war since it was originated 1,400 years ago....the games connections with war are obvious...a play-substitute for the art of war.

Wow, just about any kind of recreation is bad "
What principles can help us to avoid letting recreation crowd out spiritual activities?
For instance, some allow a desire for food, clothing, and shelter to crowd out their love for God.
Most people today have allowed the normal pursuits of life to crowd out spiritual pursuits: Add secular education and employment.
Let us take to heart the lesson that even family-matters, such as marriage and the raising of children, should not be allowed to crowd out our sense of urgency as to Jehovah’s day.

Fancy dress up parties were banned by Elders after our 2nd one
by Witness 007 inso i grew up in a small town with lots of witnesses so being bored we had two fancy dress up parties now some brothers came with swords and fake guns as pirates or cowboys one brother who was a pioneer came dressed as a woman!

You say PO-tah-to and I say po-Tay-to.
The word "potato" can be pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable (PO-tah-to) or the second syllable (po-TAY-to).

Few JW leader have children
by slimboyfat init’s been discussed before that few jw leaders, past and present, have had children.
this is in contrast with other groups, such as the mormons, whose leaders have had a lot of children.
i wonder if this has impacted jw growth.

Journeyman, I really enjoy the info you added. My husband also had elders saying they could not be scheduled for parts during the week because they would be gone on the road for work. Then when the weekend came, they would beg off because they were too tired! My husband was an elder and he had 4 separate assignments as an elder to fill in on those parts. He finally walked away when I did. 25 years later we are both glad. Chore Boy was what he was called behind his back.

Why "Removed" instead of "Disfellowshipped or Shunning"
by blondie ini was mulling this over last night...too much free time, i know.
both disfellowshipping and shunning indicate the action of avoiding someone, taking them out of your sphere of associates.
probably is a better sound bite to say "removed.

What was your deconstruction process from being a jw?
by Touchofgrey ini became aware of jws and the un ,so i checked the internet and found it was true that they were a member, and that led me down the rabbits hole and started to look into the history of the bible students and the behaviour of russell and rutherford etc ,and how much the teaching changed and the internal politics and the failed end of the world teachings etc.. i then found myself in a no man's land regarding god and the bible, i then began to use critical thinking regarding the bible and if there was a god , looking into the origins of the bible and it's stories eg adam and eve story, flood legends, exodus from egypt and if the jesus story was historical or not etc .. looking at the origin of our universe and the planet earth led me to the conclusion that no god exists.
.
the purpose of this topic is just to understand your deconstruction purpose from the jws and not to get into arguments about our now held beliefs or lack of.

It was a process for me, brick by brick...finally I was at a circuit assembly and heard this in 3 different talks. 1) We should be trained like baby elephants, tied to a stake with a chain, taught they could only go so far...when elephant was big, even though stake was gone, the elephant still thought it could only go so far 2) Audience invited to look at non-jw spouse and realize that they were walking corpses (yes some non-jw husbands were there) 3) And that if Jesus saw a dirty quarter and a shiny penny, he would pick up the shiny penny ignoring the "dirty" quarter...not quite what Jesus taught! I was out the door that moment, picked up my stuff and told my jw husband I was going out to the car and home, he could come with me or find a ride home, he came with me. Last time I ever had any contact...no explanation to the elders...25 years later still out.

WingCommander, I hope you didn't think I said you were lying, far from it. I was just looking for a direct correlation to that in the vocabulary of the WTS publications. I found that most current use of "adherent" was aimed at non-jw religions. What I found was the terms "fellow believers" or "fellow worshippers" are used now, and agree that the word "member" has fallen by the wayside. Do you have somewhere the WTS has interacted with the legal system and "adjusted" the term "member" in the WTS comments to the legal system? Not for proof for me, but other people who are not familiar with the WTS legal tactics. I don't doubt that the WTS is using careful word choice to establish a so-called "legal" premise in their own mind (the WTS). Like "removed" rather than "disfellowshipping." Or saying that the WTS doens't have a clergy class in past WT publications, but now have "adjusted" it to "paid clergy" to qualify under the "clergy-penitent" exemption that the Catholic Church and others are using to say they are not required to report child abuse. But the idea/meaning is the same.

The only time I saw the WTS mention a specific movie/book and that it was not appropriate for Christians was E.T. Awake 1983 7/8 p.27 "Christ or E.T.?
E.T.—The Extra-Terrestrial burst on the scene in the United States this past summer, attracting theater audiences in record numbers….Interestingly, many have noted parallels in the story to that of the life of Jesus Christ. Said Professor Albert E. Millar, Jr.: “I think the thing that struck me most was the idea of the capacity to heal, and then when E.T. died and was resurrected.” We have in E.T., then, an enchanting Messiahlike figure that gives momentary emotional release to our need for a true friend with powers greater than ours. Therein lies the movie’s great appeal...Later on, when E.T. gets drunk sampling beer, and Elliott in telepathic sympathy feels the effects, it is all portrayed as something cute. Further, some of the language used by these children is gross profanity. This, along with the supernatural aspects of the movie, has bothered many Christians...E.T. may be a skillfully constructed and highly entertaining movie. But it provides no substitute for our True Friend, Jesus Christ, who saves us from this dying, wicked world. After all, E.T. is make-believe. Christ is reality." The WTS makes this seem to be a personal choice but this article is aimed at non-jws because it is in the Awake magazine. But I'm sure some jws used this to browbeat other jws with it.
