Watchtower Promotes Higher Education
Progress of Spanish Women
THE dean of Madrid University got himself in Dutch with the women of Spain when he came out with the proposition that the women ought not to obtain higher educations, but that their place is at home. They have called his attention to the fact that in the last few years one-fourth of the students at his university have been women, that these girls are taking most of the honors at the university, that there are now ten prominent and successful women lawyers in Spain, and that when it comes to government jobs and stenographic and secretarial positions the women are showing the men that they can take care of themselves in first-class
shape. (1927/Golden Age/August 10/pg.712)
Governments Who Deny Higher Education Are Of The Devil
At the beginning, the socialist influence in the government was powerful. It has gradually become less so. About November, 1928, a new government went into office. It is decidedly conservative and reactionary. It stands for the protection of the church denominations. In Latvia, as in other countries, the financiers, politicians and clergy go hand in hand. This is a combination always against the interests of the common people. It is of the Devil.
In the days of the old Russian Empire, Latvians were not permitted to acquire a higher education or enter any municipal vocation. Only those who could afford to travel abroad could obtain such an education. As a result there was practically no Latvian bourgeoisie in those days. (1929/Golden Age/July 24/pg.688)
