a huge question that i have in the back of my mind regarding the wts is where all of the money ends up.

no one really has a conclusive answer to that.

i think it would reveal a lot if we were able to find out.. i know there have been various threads in the past where it revealed a clue here and a clue there.

MAN Roland Breaks Into The Japanese Web Press Market
Open House To Celebrate The First LITHOMAN Installation
Two years ago MAN Roland strengthened its activities in Japan by acquiring an 80 percent majority interest in its Japanese Sales & Service Partner DIC MANROLAND of Tokyo. The first objective of this joint venture was to concentrate even harder on the sheetfed press business that was already well established in Japan. But the partners also planned to get a foothold in the web press market which they have done in an impressive fashion by selling a LITHOMAN to the Watchtower Society. This press started up in April and an Open House event was held at the customer’s premises in Ebina City in September to celebrate this landmark development.

    Some notable guests
50 guests from 27 Japanese printing companies attended the Open House including representatives from industry giants Toppan Printing, Dai Nippon Printing, and Kyodo Printing, as well as NTT Quaris, a printing company that belongs to Japan’s largest telephone concern.

The first LITHOMAN in Japan has been in operation at the Watchtower Society since April and MAN Roland celebrated this landmark installation at an Open House event in the customer’s premises in September.

    Printing and plate changing demonstrated
During the Open House the 64-page LITHOMAN printed the 32-page "Watchtower" magazine two-up in one pass. This A5 product was printed on 40 g/sqm paper at a production speed of 90 000 copies per hour in top quality with absolutely no creasing. And automated plate changing was also demonstrated to show how different language versions are produced.

MAN Roland Project Manager Stefan Wasserbäch reports: "The Watch-tower executives were very pleased with the performance of their LITHOMAN. Two people changed eight plates in just a little over four minutes and as soon as they were finished the automatic acceleration system had the press back running at full speed almost immediately. The difficult single-web production of 16 black and white pages – eight each at the start and end of the magazine – and 16 four-color pages in the middle also ran trouble-free and in perfect quality."

Discussions underlined the level of interest
Discussions between the Open House visitors, MAN Roland’s representatives and host company Watchtower confirmed the high level of interest that Japanese web offset printers have in the High Volume technology available from MAN Roland.

    LITHOMAN performance unique in Japan
Just like their colleagues in many other parts of the world, Japan’s printers are facing the challenge to produce more flexibly, in better quality, and at the same time less expensively. Therefore MAN Roland is convinced that the global trend towards High Volume commercial printing will be unstoppable in Japan as well.

Günter Grass, Managing Director of DIC MANROLAND, sees this LITHOMAN installation as the prelude to more success in the web press market: "There is no other web press at the present time in Japan that is comparable to the LITHOMAN. And we believe that its productivity, flexibility and quality in High Volume printing on an industrial scale will definitely be of interest to other Japanese printing companies. After all, MAN Roland has installed 196 LITHOMAN presslines worldwide since 1996 and can thus prove it has more experience than any other manufacturer."

Visitors to the Open House came from all notable Japanese printing companies and they showed a great deal of interest in the High-Volume technology of the LITHOMAN.

Watchtower LITHOMAN in production since April
The order placed by the internationally active Watchtower Society of the religious group Jehovah’s Witnesses covered a total of seven LITHOMAN presslines for their printing plants in England, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Japan, and the United States. Deliveries started in July 2003 and the LITHOMAN for Japan was the third one to be installed.

This large order gave MAN Roland the opportunity once again to show its capabilities in professional project management. MAN Roland Project Manager Stefan Wasserbäch: "We were able to conclude the project according to plan and we were even below the prescribed time and budget limits."

MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AG is the global market leader in web offset printing systems. The LITHOMAN is the flagship for High Volume commercial web offset printing and the one installed in Japan has a maximum output of 45,000 copies per hour which equates to a web speed of 12.3 metres per second. It is a 64-page press with a web width of 1480 mm.

    Religious publications in multi-million runs
The new LITHOMAN presslines will be used to print most issues of the Jehova’s Witnesses’ long-run publications such as "The Watchtower" with a run of almost 25 million copies in 146 languages every two weeks, and "Awake" which currently has run of around 22 million copies in 86 languages. The presslines will also print Bibles and biblical reference works with each of these publications having runs of several million copies.

The LITHOMAN at the Watchtower Society prints religious publications in multi-million runs.

The year 2000 saw dynamic growth in E&I’s Compaq contract, racking up some $35 million in sales, which is up from $23 million in the previous year. As we acknowledge this tremendous growth, it is also important to recognize all of those members whose participation made it possible. One of E&I’s great success stories of 2000 is the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York , which accounts for nearly $1.5 million in Compaq purchases

Watchtower is a legal organization in use by the Jehovah’s Witnesses, whose governing body is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York. Watchtower created and maintains an extensive administrative network for its 109 branch offices, with advanced computing capability built on a strong Compaq platform. In 2000 alone, Watchtower either added or upgraded nearly 50 file servers (Proliant 1600 and ML370 models) and over 1400 desktop systems (Deskpro EP models).

Additional hardware procurement featured the Compaq Professional Series of multi-processor workstations, Smart Arrays and DLT backup tape drives, totaling a staggering one terabyte of storage capacity!

In addition to the aggressive standard discounts provided by the E&I/Compaq Contract — 12% for Desktops, Portables and Workstations, and 15% for Servers and Options — Watchtower has saved thousands of dollars by exercising the optional volume discount. Through strategic planning and product standardization, Watchtower’s knowledgeable purchasing team places "large volume" orders of 100 or more units with either E&I’s Information Technology Specialist, Elie Saade, or Jeff Sloane, Compaq’s Senior Account Manager for the New York Metropolitan Area. These purchase orders are then submitted to Compaq, and reviewed for special discount opportunities. As noted in E&I’s Contract Sourcing Guide, "Large quantity requirements may qualify for greater discounts."

Watchtower’s purchasing team takes advantage of this program whenever possible and demonstrates the effectiveness of a centralized staff of well-informed purchasing professionals. While these volume orders must be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, your dedicated E&I IT Specialist and local Compaq Account Manager are always available to ensure that you receive the best possible prices, maximum savings and prompt delivery.

The Cooperative would like to thank Watchtower for its contribution to the great success and continued reinforcement of the E&I/Compaq partnership.
