Not so sure about that. Some people would say the opposite. For many, the ability of humans to reason, and to understand the world around us, is one of the biggest reasons for believing in a deity who ensured the universe would contain beings able to understand its nature. The most remarkable thing about the universe is not even its nature, as such, or its configuration or laws, although all those things are remarkable. The most remarkable thing is that we humans are able to make sense of it. Or as Einstein said: the eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility. The fact that the world is comprehensible is a miracle.

My grandad was very lucid the day before he died. He also said his dead mother spoke to him and told him not to worry. You just tend to routinely dismiss these things on so-called rational grounds. But if they are so common and so matter of fact, should they be dismissed so easily?

Why the term "waking up?"

to me, it is rather that a jdub realizes that what they have believed for years was a pack of lies and then they have to make a conscious decision if they want to continue to believe in lies or stop being a jdub or just go along for the ride.. it just amazes me how many die-hard jdubs there are despite every failed prophecy about the end coming, the borg being a part of the dreaded wild best united nations, the put down of women in the borg, the massive cover-up of the child abuse in the borg, the willingness to let a child die because they need blood, and the eagerness to shun a child who at the age of 10 got dunked to make mommy and daddy happy only to not want to be a jdub later and have the parents treat them like they are dead because 8 overweight, balding, goofy looking, incoherent men in upper state new york say that are the rules for being a christain.. jehovah's witnesses are a very sad cult that attracts people with emotional, psychological, or medical issues, have very large egos, can't make simple decisions, and believe in the tooth fairy..

You have a classic “yeti or Loch Ness monster theory of God” approach to the question, as described by Terry Eagleton. This is the idea that the existence of God can be approached the same way as the existence of a mythical creature can be proved on the basis of empirical evidence on a case by case basis. This theory doesn’t take into account that many believers do not conceive of God as a “thing” that can be evaluated in this manner. Indeed the approach assumes what it is supposed to prove: that if God exists he should conform to a reductive materialist conception of reality. And since no God can survive in this reductive materialist environment (as Loch Ness cannot sustain a monster or family of monsters) God is implicitly ruled out. But this process proves nothing other than the person’s prior commitment to a reductively material universe.
The problem with eliminating the gods one by one in the simplistic fashion that Dawkins and other atheists recommend, is that it apparently takes no account of the possibility that there may be a God with some basic features common to many faith traditions, but identical to none. Or to put it another way, it doesn’t allow for the possibility that existence is a common feature that religions have correct about God, but that the actual characteristics of God may not be fully apprehended by anyone.
If there is a God then it does not seem unreasonable to suppose that he may exist in a fashion which is not identical to any particular human conception of him. Or indeed in a way that is close to some or one tradition, but differs in some important respect. All of these options seem logically feasible, and entirely untouched by a simplistic process of eliminating human conceptions of God one by one.
All you are doing in this process is eliminating gods you don’t believe in. It is not touching the ultimate question of whether there is a God at all.

this is the first new design kh i've seen in washington state even though i would think by now another one or two have been built.
maybe not with their financial situation being the way it is.

In any survey you get a certain persentage whose answers simply make no sense, such as people who don’t believe in God but think the Bible is inspired by God or some such nonsense. The problem is words can be construed in many ways. For example someone might say God inspired the Bible the way angels inspired Michaelangelo. Or people may simply be careless in how they answer, or have genuine convictions that are inconsistent. All of us are capable of holding beliefs that are inconsistent if pursued to their logical conclusions (my belief I should drive my car and my belief that global warming is a bad thing). Sometimes people are just irrational too.
Having said all that, don’t Buddhists believe in an afterlife without God as such. So it’s not an unknown position, if a little unusual to western conceptions.
Plus you've got people with non traditional conceptions of God, that might fall outside most notions of “God”: such as pantheists, animists, panpsychists and so on.
Plus you get singularitains these days, some of whom seem to espouse a kind of afterlife without God.
So many possibilities in this amazingly unfathomable universe of ours.
