  the tobacco industry held in thrall millions of addicted smokers for decades with an almost endless litany of false claims reinforced by propaganda and bad science.it is informative and eye-opening to examine this brilliant but insidious strategy.1.

  exploiting controversy the tobacco team focused on "conflicts of interest" to create a distraction and exploit mistrust so nicotine addicts own confirmation bias would work in their favor.

  this strategy of producing scientific uncertainty undercut public health efforts and regulatory interventions designed to reduce the harms of smoking.the watchtower easily did the same thing by exploiting the confusing doctrine of the trinity and pointing to the corrupt history of the catholic church.

  Good thread Terry.

  And interesting about Morris, averagejoe. If Morris is personally wealthy it puts an interesting complexion on his 2017 annual meeting speech about WT cutbacks. He basically suggested that magazines and yearbooks were being cut because JWs were not paying enough to keep them going. Would Morris be in a position to dip into his own pocket for the organisation if he wished? Would the recent lack of Watchtower success be offputting for a man who grew up aware of family success? He did come across as almost contemptuous of the situation, either Watchtower failure, or JW lack of contributions.

  Plus I wonder if the forum has ever explored JW tobacco connections in Southern Africa. Apparently JWs were big tobacco growers in the region at one time.

  I don’t even understand the question. A factor in education in terms of what? Whether people get any? How good the education Is? How well the students do?

  Trailer looks good. Only one thing I would criticise. The young elder says, “she likes to voice her own opinions too much”. Although the sentiment is correct, I don’t think JWs usually verbalise the criticism that way, because it’s so obviously controlling. It sounds more like an outsider”s critique of the JW position, than an insider’s free expression. How would a JW express it? Maybe they would say something like, “she is critical of Jehovah’s organisation/faithful slave” or “promoting apostate ideas”. Watchtowers have criticised “independent thinking”, and some JWs pick up and use that language, but I get the feeling that many JWs shy away from condemning thinking and individuality in terms as stark as those. Probably because it’s self-consciously just a bit stupid to condemn thinking and individuality, because if you’ve got neither then why bother saying anything at all?

  1. They changed the announcement so all DFing and DA are the same “this person is no longer one of JWs”.

  2. The announcement is made during the service meeting, don’t know why they would be holding Watchtowers.

  3. Elders are normally transferred with their status intact these days, so they do arrive at new congregations as elders.

  4. Unmarried elders are common, especially if they’ve been through the training school.

  5. If he’s an elder then why not be considered for CO? They need younger COs badly.

  6. I have been to two JW funerals for suicides. It’s up to the elder if he wants to take it.

  7. A lot of JW funerals these days seem more focussed on the person. I think it’s just another indication that Watchtower control is slipping and JWs are asserting their individuality.

  so, this week on the clm there was an interesting comment at our kh.. under the "apply yourself to the field ministry" portion this week, there was the bible study assignment based on the publication: who are doing jehovah’s will today?

  published in 2016. the material was from lesson 28 "what can be found on our website?

  there is a footnote at the bottom that reads: .

  I don’t know. Some JWs believe it so strongly that they can come across as sceptical. In their mind they are like, “I am so strong, I won’t be affected by apostates, bring it on.”

  The urban legends we heard as JWs!

  how often have we heard some sort of sensationalist urban legend as jws?.

  here is an example i was told as a kid:.

  the experience of a sister who knocked on a door and was greeted by a big fierce looking man- intimidating and mean.

  Have these already been mentioned:

  The sister who went to a worldly party and somone infected her with HIV from a needle. So don’t socialise with worldly people because that’s what can happen.

  In various scenarios JWs in conversation with a demonic person. The demonic person says: God killed our children in the flood. (The nephilim) So we are going to turn as many JW children away from the truth and get them killed at Armageddon.

  Sister bought an item second hand from charity shop and was plagued with demons until she got rid of it again.

  I don’t think there’s been any shortage of Watchtower news recently. Frankly it’s coming quicker than I can keep track. Ten or fifteen years ago a single leaked video would have been news of the year.

  I think it’s a number of things.

  First of all young people just don’t seem to use old fashioned forums as much as older people now do. They use Facebook and reddit, so I’m told, and probably other stuff I don’t even know about.

  Plus this forum seems to have drifted to the right, collectively and as individuals. Maybe that’s just because people have got older.

  Plus JWs themselves are older on average, so it makes sense that the people who leave tend to be older too on average.

  Whereas the young ones who leave JWs these days, some of them seem to just walk off without much fuss. No angst about doctrines such as mediator or 1914 or all that. It probably seems quite archane to most young people these days, inside or outside JWs.

  Relative rates of mental illness

  a report produced 50 years ago by a psychiatrist at a west australian mental health facility ("asylum"l reported that the mental illness rate among jws was 3 times the norm of society.

  other similar studies at the time concluded the rate was much higher.. i wrote to the psychiatrist at the time, asking whether the wts attracted people who were already susceptible to mental illness or if the situation was created after the person became a jw.

  he responded that they did not know.. being myopically focused on the wts at the time, but more importantly belonging to an alternative eschatological apocalyptic body at the time, i did not think more broadly.. i think that today i would like to know:.

  Spencer’s study was methodologically problematic, it was biased, and it was rejected by other academics, including James Beckford and James Penton. There are no good data available on the questions you raise, as far as I am aware, which is unfortunate.
