Yeah people conflate the two. Fred Franz lacked the qualifications, but apparently had the ability to perform translation from Hebrew and Greek. It’s notable that scholars who wrote hostile reviews of the NWT tended to criticise Franz’s translation judgements and English grammar, rather than his apparent understanding of the source languages at a basic level.

Fred Franz Former Training in Ancient Greek
by Wild_Thing inhas anyone been able to verify that fred franz received the minimal training in ancient greek that he claimed gave him the expertise to translate the bible?
you would think that would be fairly easy to verify or disprove in this day and age.
what college did he attend?

Universal sovereignty on trial
by Factfulness ini just had a thought of clarity regarding the jw explanation for this doctrine.
they explain that satan challenged god regarding his right to rule.
god failed to prove his right to rule.

shepherdless, if you asserted a financial adviser had used the word “asset” wrongly, or a lawyer had used the word “discovery” wrongly, it would be reasonable to ask what the correct definition is and how they used the word wrongly. If you cannot do this, then on what basis can you say they used the words wrongly?
I’m sorry when you said “I wonder if he even knows what the terms mean”. I really thought you were implying you had some good reason to suppose he was not using the words correctly, and that you could enlighten me about where he had gone wrong. I was ready to learn something.
I didn’t imagine it was an idle statement of innocent wonder about the world. Such as “I wonder if there’s a train somewhere that is three and half minutes late”.
Maybe Hoffmann used the words correctly or maybe he didn’t. But seriously, if there is no good reason for suspecting one way or the other, or we are not in a position to say, then what’s the point of bringing it up?
Like I said, there is circumstantial evidence to suppose he is uses his terminology correctly, in that there is many videos of him discussing his ideas with other smart people from various backgrounds including Dennett and Murray. If he was throwing around quantum theories and string theories Chopra style, you’d think someone would have pointed it out.

The Creator Book was pretty good. I heard it was written by Jack Barr. Or was that Lloyd Barry?

I am well known to the local Quakers by now, I’ve visited them a number of times and am on their mailing list. (They are currently organising involvement in the Pride march next week. I am joining the Unitarian stall.) The Quakers have an impressive library including many books on pacifism. I have also visited other peace churches, or churches with some involvement in conscientious objection, including Christadelphians, Seventh Day Adventists and Unitarians. Only the Quakers and Christadelphians have a longer and more consistent anti-war stance than JWs as I understand it, and they are both far fewer in number. At over 8 million worldwide JWs are by far the biggest peace community in the world.
I don’t know anything about Catholic Workers. Do they actually refuse to fight, or just talk about it?

“Christians” go to war and kill each other.
JWs refuse to go to war.

Thanks dozy for the summary, definitely more succinct and to the point than certain other online reviews of the broadcast.
Interesting that they are reusing video material. Is Watchtower actually producing any new stuff these days?

Proof of God
by MrDantastic ini'm an atheist as i do not see any evidence for the existance of a god.
i encourage critical thinking in everyone and am ready to debate anyone on whether or not there is a god and what that god might be like.

As I understand it rainbows are a result of light refracting through moisture in the lower atmosphere. I have not heard of a serious alternative explanation involving unicorns.
For many people the idea of God explains why there is something rather than nothing, because he is understood to be a being outside of material reality who is the ultimate cause of everything that exists. For many people this makes more sense than simply asserting that reality exists and no further explanation is required or even possible.

Because the existence of God explains the existence of the reality, its configuration for life, and human consciousness, all of which cry out for explanation. The idea of a “pink unicorn” doesn’t seem to help explain anything.
