  Were / Are the Governing Body "Rock Stars"

  in 1976 when i was a young lad of 6, fred franz came to glasgow and gave a talk in govan a suburb on the south side of the city (for those of you who dont know).

  our congregation hired a bus to ferry us all to the hall and it was standing room only.

  being only 6, i have only the vaguest of memories other than an old man shouting and bawling from the stage.

  Number 6 speaks of Jack Barr in his o/p.....I met him once, went "on the work" with him just before he was called to the GB. The Scot was then at the London Bethel.

  Funny thing was that was a most humble and unassuming man , totally unlike the image we have of A Morris 3rd or Steve Left. He was 'old school" .I don't think he would fit the Televangelist GB of today.

  Regarding Hero worship, I recall once in around 1960 Bro Knorr was to be a speaker at a convention in the North . My older sister and her friends travelled up to attend, because HE was there. I remember my non witness dad grumbling about "hero worship".

  Yes.. it is likely that a “sister” will receive evidence from the victim and submit that to the elders.. There may be cases where a trusted sister could be asked to help a traumatised young girl. But would she be involved in the consideration of the abuser or have any say in the outcome? That is strictly a male role and elder committee only.

  They would not shun a child who was seen to be a victim of abuse, but all sorts of circumstances can apply later . There are bound to be cases where adult victims of past abuse feel aggrieved.

  Is it possible to nullify a baptism?

  hope you are all well,.

  i was wondering within the organisation if there are any guidelines or grounds for nullifying a baptism.

  see i grew up a jehovah's witness and was baptised at age 13, i didn't get baptised for the right reasons, i felt pressured to because my friends were getting baptised at the same time.

  “A minor cannot legally enter into a contract....so my personal opinion is that all baptisms prior to age of majority are all null and void.”

  
  That’s being logical and reasonable, but not the way this organisation works. All candidates for baptism answer 80 questions to show they understand what they are doing. The WT view ,in my experience, is to hold to the Bible principle “ what you vow you must pay” . No excuses.

  I liked Simon's expert opinion on computer capabilities and , like others , I cannot see this happening . People love the independence of driving how they want. When out on the road some like to drive fast,others are happy at just a reasonable speed ....that is human nature. How many would be happy just allowing the machine to do it?

  Now an electric car with zero emissions ? That's different.

  The Faithful and Discreet Slave Just "have" The Truth

  in the late 80's when i was in my late teens i used to with my then wife to be attend a monday night pre-watchtower study at a local elders house.. this guy was revered as very knowledgable and he was scholarly and interesting to listen to; so at the time it was a genuinely enjoyable monday evening spent with oftentimes discussion would veer far of the subject at hand and lasting to well after 11pm some evenings.. this particular night, the subject up for discussion was "the faithful and discreet slave" and how we should be obeying them without question.

  right in the middle of the study this elder said as a question not in the wt article; "how do we really know the current fds as lead by the governing body are the real deal.

  i mean what actual proof do we have?".

  I have these discussions with my “mature in years and JWism “ family.

  They happily agree and lead the conversation that

  1) elders hardly ever do their jobs these days and don’t care for the flock

  2) the idea of Spirit appointment is nonsense

  3) material these days seems written for children, and videos? Yuk!

  4) the current GB are not a patch on the old ones

  I could list more complaints.... I say “ why follow it then?” ...They reply

  ” It’s the truth isn’t it “

  As a U K resident I believe that Phizzy paints a distorted view of our homeland and our Government and Mr Johnson, the Prime Minister.It ain't that bad over here, apart from the weather. Too many rainy cold days that sap your spirits.

  I always loved the culture of the USA , especially the South (the home of the music) but could I live there ? Hurricanes, Twisters, forest fires and searing hot summers put me off.

  Canada looks nice...but I'd miss our football, that's soccer to the uninitiated)...

  It's all superfluous anyway since I am not going anywhere. Let's make a cup of tea...
