We are saving money alright, no opportunities to go out and spend it in coffee houses and the events we would have gone to if it were not for the virus. It is a quiet, boring summer, but a cheap one.

Saving Money While Stuck At Home
by Simon inso you're stuck at home, you may be worried about your income, welcome to the world of filling your stuck-in-the-house time with saving some money!.
here in canada, our energy costs are going up because we have a carbon tax.
today, in the middle of the crisis, trudeau is raising it by 50%, probably as some perverse "thank you" to all the truckers delivering vital goods.

The National Anthem
by BluesBrother inrecent controversies in america brought this to mind , although i don’t want this to become a political thread , rather to discuss the wts rules that stop a jw showing respect for the national anthem.. the watchtower says that doing so is an act of idolatry, giving worship to the state or its icon.
as such witnesses remain seated when the anthem is played.
in britain people simply stand quietly to show respect, there is no hand gesture.. when i was a boy, every cinema show and theatre concluded with the anthem, being played .usually it was orchestrally with no words sung.

My reasoning was similar to the post above by 'Desirous of Change' , I went to a football International and saw the crowd standing for both anthems. That showed me it was a simple respect, not submission or worship.
After all 1 Peter 2,17 says " Have honour for the king" . To deliberately sit down as dubs do is disrespectful.

When I was a boy, every cinema show and theatre concluded with the anthem, being played .Usually it was orchestrally with no words sung. Therefore every time we went out we had to skidaddle out quickly or we would be caught in a difficult situation. The alternative was to brave it and sit tight feeling the eyes of everyone glaring at you.....
What about you? Have you suffered difficulties as a dub due to this issue. Is it the same in other countries?

How many of you would actually believe a child abuser would let his crime be watched by minimum two witnesses?
by Thinkforyourself inin many closed religious cults, sects or globally widely spread religions, sexual abuse on big scale is revealed and covered up by the religious authorities.
in the jw, the culture is to deal with these matters within the org itself, and the rule is, "no crime can be proven without the presentation of at least two witnesses".
men made the rules, men commit these crimes and men defend them and even forse these children to meet and talk to their abusers.
-
BluesBrother
Of course not. Nb. I have never seen a claim that abusers won’t lie.
you need one witness if the victim speaks up . Unless the abuser is so careless to be overheard by a sibling, it is not going to happen.

Witnessing Work to Stop?
by Sea Breeze inmy 87 year old dad called me for the first time in 16 years the other day .... just to chat.
i was floored to say the least since he didn't even bother to call me when my mom died several years ago.
he called again today to inquire how i felt about jehovah's witnesses.

I have no doubt that the Field Ministry will start again whenever it considered safe ,and legal to do so. The Governing Body have said nothing to suggest that it is all over.
Some Witnesses may tell you that the end is here, but that is speculation and wishful thinking

Why did they have to HANG MARY?
by Terry inthey hanged mary!
(the townsfolk did)i'll tell you about it - but .... the facts will turn readers against her.
i mean, after all, she did kill a man.sympathy instantly dries up; making her agonizing death--as awful as it was--much less empathetic.

All along I thought she was human ! You had me there , Terry.
A shocking story nontheless . It goes to show what people can do, at their worst.
Her story is on Wikipedia.

Breaking: Beards in The Watchtower
by neat blue dog inthe latest issue of the watchtower shows a man with a beard praying.. .
i fully expected to see him 'progress' to clean-shaven in the following pictures, but instead he is still bearded when 'applying bible principles'.. .
i then realized that he was already featured on the cover itself.. .
-
BluesBrother
Come on,...... we have to stop living in the past. True, the WTS used to have an issue with beards. I saw enough of that in my home congregation in the 70s and 80s . But things have moved on .
Nowadays a neat beard is perfectly acceptable and it is time we gave this matter a rest.

Meet George Floyd
by cofty inhis murder was a crime and justice must be done, but it's sobering to learn more about the man who is being lionised by millions.
thanks as always to the courageous candace owens.. ....

As a Brit, I try and keep out of American issue threads , but this is one that has affected the whole world, we have had demos too.
Only a naive person would believe wholeheartedly all the eulogies about him, but it is wrong to blacken his name with insults. What would it matter anyway? If he was the worst person on earth, does that justify police brutality and homicide?
I thought USA was a country ruled by law.
The protesters have an issue that needs solving ....the looters want locking up.

Why couldn't I stop laughing?

I don't know... I thought he was genuine in what he said , not funny.
He did not talk about any of the common doctrinal issues that we have , just his experiences with the local dubs , and the pressue he felt with study and meeting preparation. .. He must have taken that admonition very literally . Most of them don't do that much.
Perhaps he will come on here in a bit?

JWs want to preach right now so very badly, they feel the fish are biting
by BourneIdentity inthey know many people are fearful and feeling vulnerable due to world events.. but something i’ve always considered is how will they be better off by becoming a jw.
they can be a jw, but the world events still are happening causing everyone anxiety.
and no, jws are not immune from this, jws are more anxious and paranoid as ever right now.

What evidence is there that the ordinary JW “wants to preach so badly”?
I don’t see it. The ones I know in family are loving the break and seem to have forgotten their former routine. I hear nothing about the ministry, except cynical laughter when an elder dared to ask if they had a report.
Anyway , what benefits would a convert get? I have hardly seen a new one for years unless you count the lonely foreigner who was distinctly, ahem, mentally challenged.
Still, he would get , community, a sense of belonging, perhaps a faith, some Bible knowledge, perhaps a hope for a better future... Even though we can see that to be false.
