Ruin those Ruining th Earth

it has been mentioned before but since we have been discussing environmental issues on another thread, i thought it might be timely to discuss rev 11:18 which has recently become a popular text for those christians concerned about environmental threats of pollution and climate change.

is this passage being interpreted correctly?

did the writer somehow anticipate the modern environmental situation, or did he intend something more in keeping with the bible's general concerns of morality and sin?.

Thank you Pete, that is most interesting I have enjoyed your posts for years.I can dispute other "signs of the times" but it has always been hard to deny that we live in a time when men seem to be ruining the Earth.

I am no scholar but I would only comment :

The NWT is not alone in its rendering , I have compared KJV, NIV and NEB .

The verse uses the Greek word twice. If we were consistent in using it, would it make sense to read, "[He] will corrupt those corrupting the earth" ?

Just my laymans thoughts....

Recently Disfellowshipped

hi i’m getting disfellowshipped on thursday and was wondering what advice those that have left have for me.

What do you want to happen?

If you will lose family or have other goodvreason not to be shunned by them, did you appeal? if not and it is still within 7 days, do so... right now . Any old reason will do. At the appeal committee, grovel , beg plead newfound repentence , make them see that the first decision was wrong. It might work . The first committee will hate you but no matter.

If you don't mind being outside , follow the good advice given above. It is not easy starting over , the world seems scary but little by little it will get easier.

hi there i am not a jw but i am having bible study.

i came to christianity a few months before and i was searching for the right path.

one of the things god spoke to me about and directed me in was to do away with all the vanity that was in me and now i wear the head covering and the modest dresses.

Good advice in the other replies, check out this religion from all sources , dont be afraid to ask difficult questions. Dont confuse the warmth and friendliness of decent people around you with the overall teaching and conduct of the global organization.

There is nothing to stop you covering your head if you wish, and dressing as you like. JW's require a female head to be covered only when praying before others or teaching, as a Christian man would do.

If you wish to cover always, some would find a hat or scarf that did not look like " a Muslim or an Israelite " yet would perform the same function. But that is just a suggestion. ...... you do as you like .

District convention to be held in assembly hall instead of stadium

last night they announced that this summers district convention will be held at an assembly hall.. this is the first time i've seen this happen.

there are a couple of congregations in the same hall here and they aren't going to the same ones.

they are having multiple dates.. the hall they are going to use can only hold 1500 people max.. just wondering if maybe they just couldnt get anything bigger this year or if the falling numbers are playing a part in this decision.

Why book a 40 thousand seater for half that number of JW delegates?

because there is a big difference in sitting for 90 minutes for a football game and sitting for three days for a convention. Once the dubs are in, with family groups , kids, grandma and all their food and bags, it would be a nightmare if the stands were full to capacity.

Nb. If they downsize the summer convention to ass. halls , it takes away the buzz, the atmosphere......I say that attendance would plummet.

Does Today’s Comedy Offend You?

there was a time we could laugh about mindless silly things.

someone using an ethnic accent, making fun of their own race, making fun of someone’s intelligent, etc.

we could laugh without feeling constantly offended , upset or disturbed.

Sure, but what if a non Muslim comic told those jokes or a straight person did about gay people ?

There is a fine line between prejudice and humour but subjects should not be taboo.

To me, modern comedies are just not funny.

look closely at he picture of “russian” police breaking in to what appears to be a utility shed.. first, you’d have to be a complete moron to believe anything you see.. the “police” are shown using a garden pic to open a door.

the photo did indeed appear on JW.org a year or so ago. then it accompanied reports of a litany of raids and abuse by the Russian authorities. If you look carefully at the pic , right side, it has a credit to a Russian State website.

So these are certainly not "elders playacting"... please check carefully before rushing to print with false assumptions. ... I am for fair criticism, but it has to be accurate.

Motivations for Watchtower leadership

i’ve struggled for some time with this question.

why would the elders, cos, branch committee, helpers to gb and the gb themselves devote their lives to progressing in the organization, if the whole thing is one big sham?

i have 3 ideas so far.. 1) money.

when i was an elder back in the day, I was certainly a sincere believer . So were the honourable, if misguided , men that I served with. How can we judge the motives of others without evidence.

Personally, I go along with Ray Franz and his "victim of victims" comment.

But they are still wrong, sincere or not.

Anyone have someone move in and take over the congergation?

i have been in two congregations where someone moved in from the big city and took over with the attitude of the northerners when they go south, i come from where they do it right.

like bulls in china shops they remove people and do the house cleaning like the political org cult it is.

Over here it would elders moving from South to North who might be thinking they knew best.

I did that once.... but not , I hope with an attitude.

what I found was that the locals kind of resented me as a newcomer .... not one of them .

In the end it was a good thing , an unhappy B of E helped me to open my eyes to the falsehood of it all.
