And this is the non-denominational church of christ right? Not the International church of christ or church of christ, scientist? I'm just asking because it seems there are a ton of churches called church of christ. My God, who knew!

Church of Christ
by TheListener in.
is anyone here associated with a non-denominational church of christ congregation?.
i read the fairly detailed write-up on wikipedia and found it somewhat, key being somewhat, similar to the jws except for the rules and regulations and the strong focus on end times.. it seems like an intriguing religious group.

non-denom bible study groups
by TheListener inis there any such thing as a church or group that gathers together to study the bible and share information without ramming it down everyone's throad and trying to disfellowship anyone who doesn't agree?.
i'd love to eventually attend a bible study group where an exchange of ideas can be had without everyone getting offended or defensive.
sort of like here, but different.

oooooooohhhh.
It didn't appear as a high control group when I looked at wikipedia. Although I did wonder about the information on disfellowshipping. duh.
nothing to see here, move along, move along.

Did Your Congregation Ever Get Away With Doing Things Until The CO's Visit?
by minimus ini remember knowing that we could have a "large gathering" in the circuit before the new circuit overseer came on the scene and this was during the beginning of the "no large gatherings" edict.
when the co had his meeting with the elders in the circuit, he chastised more than a few and even made an example ot of one somewhat "prominent" elder by demoting his duties in the circuit to send a message not to play around and try to get away with things because "mothr" is always watching......anything that you got away with?

We never bothered chasing down territory cards and such. We'd just check them out to ourselves and various family members. For some territories you could write in a publishers first name with last initial and for another their last name with first initial. This way the CO didn't see the same name(s) all over the book.
Literature, dump the old and pass out the special request crap before he comes, yeehaaa!

The food was pretty good.
I hated Oleo.
I loved pizza day. I loved it when they left out cold cuts and you could make your own sandwiches.

Great job hamsterbait. Isn't it funny how we forget to turn on "theocratese" at times. You did really well. I never do that well in situations like that.

Yes.
It would take a couple of days to get all the records "accurate" for the COs scrutiny.
The "accurate" records were just enough to make us look really good but not too much so as to stand out and have too much expected.

If Jesus gave only two commandments.......
by Gill in.
if jesus gave only two new commandments, to love god and love your neighbour, why do religions, and especially the jws, who claim to be the only true religion, have so many other laws, rules, and regulations?.
didn't apostasy therefore start with paul, and the original elders who started lording it over others and giving lots of silly rules to follow?
-
TheListener
PP,
Never thought of it that way.
Do you have some examples of other Hebrew Rabbi's that summed up the Torah with similar expressions? That is a really new thought to me. I, ignorantly, thought Jesus was the first to do so.
Also, you're right about the assumption that Jesus was saying that you didn't have to obey the law but only the two "new" commandments. I never thought about it from the perspective you mentioned.
Perhaps Paul was apostate to Jesus message or perhaps in his private revelation to Paul, Jesus got more specific with things and Paul had the onerous task of shifting the gears of the first century christians?
