It's hard for me to believe how much double think JW's do. They can be scientifically proven wrong, logically proven wrong, or even spiritually proven wrong and yet they'll still believe with all the fervor in the world (unless they have some form of intelligence locked in them). It's just amazing, makes 1984 seem all too possible.

Why do/don't you believe in God
by LouBelle innow for all the scientists out there this is not a question of proof or anything along those lines.
for my part i choose to believe in a god because i honestly believe there is one (though i did start doubting for a little while) i've always felt that there was more to our existance on earth - and that doesn't stem from me wanting to live forever or as a spirit, as i don't even know if that will happen.
i also believe in him because many many times when i could not carry on, on my own strength, i managed to pulled through.

Religion has also been the blockade of science and art for many years. Art is more opinionated than science but there has been obvious holds on science many times. Just put aside Galileo and individuals like him, just the main concept of fundamentalist religion (Which most of history has been under) shuns anything that could possible explain it to be wrong about a belief. And yes many of the great thinkers of the past were under some form of religion, but they challenged that religion. That's the attitude of liberalism and not the attitude of scrict obiedence which the bible teaches and praises and which the leaders enforce. Me personally I do not like to credit atheism for advancement. Advancement can come whether your atheist or not. I believe that rational sketicism and the willingness to search for change is the major driving force for these things.

Extinguishing evil and pain
by greendawn insupposing that you were in god's position how would you deal with the basic issue of good and evil in the world, how would you deal with that part of mankind that refuse to stop hurting and harming their fellow humans and how would you finally extinguish evil and suffering?.
remember some people accuse god of being too soft and tolerent with evil doers while others accuse him of being too harsh and merciless.
a delicate balance is called for.

That was a very good post jaffacake, you got me thinking also. You have every right to believe in your interpretation of God and quite frankly it sounds a crapload better than all of the christian denominations I've heard. However, there's too much could. There really isn't nothing but words holding all this together. God could have started evolution to spark human free will and whatnot, he could have not. He could exist he could not. Many people hold this could be or could not be God higher than scientific evidence and from looking at the JW's or looking across at the terrorists we can see that this is an unstable way of doing things. It is could be and could not be made into absolute truth that everybody should follow. Just from my experience alone, this formula mixed in with forced servitude causes many problems, yet it's based on could be and could not be. But it all comes down to faith again, really it's hard to debate faith. I can't make an experiment and prove faith wrong or right. So I usually just let the person be if they have faith yet are still sensible.

I've had plenty of experiences that can not be explained scientifically (Usually dealing with possibility). Weird shit happens, if we start thinking about it too much we'll start making up stories about why it happened which wont get us anywhere.

You've made good points jaffacake, however there's too many assumptions when you use god in such a subjective way as that. The process of evolution is "God" then, but most people's idea of God overshadows your claim that god is whatever started free will. And me personally, I don't care much for a God that makes mistakes and blames other entities that he created. Me saying he is omnipotent comes mainly from the people i associate with (JWs) so sorry if it's a little skewed.

I agree, anarchy with an intelligent race is the best form of living. But most folks will need to be reasonable and intelligent to do that eh. and Jaffacake, I do not consider choosing god's side or being wrong all that free. That's presupposed outcomes that has no evidence to support it.e In your reality our free will is limited because everything we do is either for God or against God. That's two variables, but in reality there are an endless amount of variables. This free will by God is hogwash. God wouldn't be benevolent and omnipotent if he couldn't do everything, he isn't much of a God imo. And if we don't think of God as a being or with human aspects, why did the bible do so?

Running Man's Book
by startingover ini find it interesting now that quite a few chapters of runningman's book are now posted that they are so avoided by the christians on this board.
at least it sure seems that way as few if any comments are made by them.. if there is a christian apologists thread started, the athiests are usually there posting because they have a reasonable argument and can debate it.
apparently for the christians there is no way to do that with runningman's writings.

Usually civilized debates are for searching for a command solution to a problem. However, many folks are too resistent to give up what they know in a debate, that's where the name calling comes from. I haven't seen any instance where a person resorted to curse words and name calling to get to their point, unless it's mild name-calling. But I wish there was more reasonable arguments about faith and religion and whatnot, always good to hear somebodies else opinion.
And just because somebody has made up their mind doesn't mean a debate is meaningless. In reality many debates aren't about who thinks they're right or whatnot, it's using the facts and logic reasoning to come to a concrete conclusion. Putting a person's opinion as fact only muddies up the debate, and not to be mean but one side does it more than others. Well the few that get into the debate, so it's immpossible for me to judge all christians by a few people's posts. -

I feel that the courts dislike stepping on the toes of religious expression. This is a free liscence to commit crimes. $500,000 dollars? They're the freakin mob.
