Sorry to be off topic, but I am fascinated by this! Sounds like Portugal has a good idea there--you must attend a 1-day presentation about the military or you can't ever have a government job. Seems fair.

I feel frustrated
by BlackWolf inhello all, things for the most part have been somewhat better for me because my parents haven't talked about baptism or anything recently.
i got a scholarship to go to art camp for a few weeks which has been fun (since its free, my parents didn't refuse) but it has also been very nervewracking for me.
i haven't been around any non jws for more than a year and its like being in a different world, a world where people are actually real and genuine and not mindless drones.

Yeah, just be yourself and let them like you for who you are. When things get awkward, explain it in a matter-of-fact way and move on. "My parents are super religious and don't allow me to see movies. I don't agree with them and I don't plan to be like them once I move out of their house, but for now, I have to do what they say. Tell me more about Harry Potter!"

Congratulations for leaving that blasted cult.
Question--isn't attendance compulsory and jws are not exempt? From <<that link, I see nothing objectionable to jw beliefs. You just show up and they tell you all about being in the military? What am I missing?
Attendance to the DDN is a military duty for all Portuguese citizens over 18 years old.

I knew some who used to skulk around large parking lots and stick literature on the windshields. They avoided being seen doing this and talking to people directly.
One person I remember doing this barely attended meetings but felt it was jehocker's command to preach, so she had to. Sad.

EXPOSED: JWS TRAWL DEATH NOTICES TO TARGET GRIEVING RELATIVES
by steve2 inthe leading metropolitan newspaper in new zealand, the dominion-post, yesterday front-paged confirmation that jws target grieving persons by trawling through obituaries for names of relatives and - unbelievably - even visiting cemeteries to approach persons tending graves (the article cites a recent watchtower that presented the experience of a sister who did just that).. an ex-jw elder and his wife (both unknown to me) were featured in the article after approaching the newspaper in response to a local elder's denial last week that witnesses deliberately obtain relatives' names from obituaries.. this is the third featured article in just over one week - and, to date, the most prominent.. of interest a "senior" elder from the sydney, australia bethel (which now has oversight over jws in new zealand) is quoted as not denying it happens - but tried to put a less damning spin on it by stating it was something that was up to individual witnesses and is not expected.

This was a thing in the wts home state.
I think it was taught to us in pioneer school, and isn't it one of those books from the 90s that tell you how to get your time in? Not the Reasoning book, but something along those lines, IIRC.

Of course you don't have outside friends. The organization engineers your life to exclude all others so you don't leave.
Using rewards and punishments, efforts are made to establish considerable control over a person's social environment, time, and sources of social support. Social isolation is promoted. Contact with family and friends is abridged, as is contact with persons who do not share group-approved attitudes. Economic and other dependence on the group is fostered. (In the forerunner to coercive persuasion, brainwashing, this was rather easy to achieve through simple imprisonment.) source
You can rebuild a life worth living, a truer one at that.

If Jehovah hates magic, why is it ok to go to Magic theme parks such as Disneyland the Magic Kingdom and not be disfellowshipped for it?
by Greybeard inif jehovah hates magic, why is it ok to go to magic theme parks such as disney land the magic kingdom?
i grew up a jw and we all went to disney land and magic mountain.
if jehovah hates magic then why are these places not forbidden?

Next up, Caleb's friend invites him to Disney and his mom helps him realize it would make jehoover sad.
They assumed us kids were smart enough to know "pretend magic" from "real magic" or spiritism (demonic things).
There were times when I saw it like that. Now I see it all as pretend. There has never been any evidence that magic or supernatural beings exist, despite the major advances in camera and recording technology.
