I may be so bold to offer just one book and one book only to read "Crisis of Coscience "
I second this one. He also presents some interesting alternatives to 'organized' religion that we tend to feel is necessary
i was raised roman catholic but stopped going about 25 years ago.
i was talking with someone i work with who is a jw and suggested i might look into it.
so here i am.............

"we'd like to excuse those that have talks in the second school, and those that would like to listen.".
alright, so i am sitting at the meeting last week and i hear that very typical repetitive announcement.
i start to look around and i realize that it is the same people every week who go to the back to sit in the second school.
I've found it helpful to cut a few pages out of IN SEARCH OF CHRISTIAN FREEDOM & read them during the meeting.

Captives of a Concept that addresses the hold the WTS? FDS doctrine has on JWs. I have read the book and believe it to be, in its? own way, as enlightening as the book Crisis of Conscience
Thanks Fairmind.
That is a pretty tall order (wouldn't it be great if all would read COC).
I'll give it a look

Cutting off from the Christian congregation does not involve immediate death, so family ties continue. Thus, a man who is disfellowshipped or who disassociates himself may still live at home with his Christian wife and faithful children. -----Yet, since his being disfellowshipped does not end their blood ties or marriage relationship, normal family affections and dealings can continue.14
The situation is different if the disfellowshipped or disassociated one is a relative living outside the immediate family circle and home. It might be possible to have almost no contact at all with the relative. Even if there were some family matters requiring contact, this certainly would be kept to a minimum, in line with the divine principle: "Quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person [or guilty of another gross sin], . . . not even eating with such a man."?1 Corinthians 5:11.15
Understandably, this may be difficult because of emotions and family ties, such as grandparents? love for their grandchildren. Yet, this is a test of loyalty to God,
Don't you just love 'em?
***km 8/02 p. 3 Display Christian Loyalty When a Relative Is Disfellowshipped Hence, we also avoid social fellowship with an expelled person. This would rule out joining him in a picnic, party, ball game, or trip to the mall or theater or sitting down to a meal with him either in the home or at a restaurant. 4 What about speaking with a disfellowshipped person? While the Bible does not cover every possible situation, 2 John 10 helps us to get Jehovah?s view of matters: "If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, never receive him into your homes or say a greeting to him." Commenting on this, The Watchtower of September 15, 1981, page 25, says: "A simple ?Hello? to someone can be the first step that develops into a conversation and maybe even a friendship. Would we want to take that first step with a disfellowshiped person?" 13 After hearing a talk at a circuit assembly, a brother and his fleshly sister realized that they needed to make adjustments in the way they treated their mother, who lived elsewhere and who had been disfellowshipped for six years. Immediately after the assembly, the man called his mother, and after assuring her of their love, he explained that they could no longer talk to her unless there were important family matters requiring contact. 14 Loyally upholding the disfellowshipping arrangement outlined in the Scriptures demonstrates our love for Jehovah
As with many things, this goes way beyond the scriptures

When answering the apostles? question concerning his future presence and the conclusion of the existing system of things, Jesus Christ included a parable, or illustration, dealing with a "faithful and discreet slave" and an "evil slave.
Does a parable or illustration require a fulfillment? Even if it does, what about the timing? *** w87 8/1 p. 16 Christ?s Active Leadership Today ***5 The modern history of God?s people shows that this time of accounting came in 1918-19
They were collectively found to be the "slave
Note this application of Jesus' coming:"*** w97 3/1 p. 13 Are You Ready for Jehovah?s Day? ***
On this account you too prove yourselves ready, because at an hour that you do not think to be it, the Son of man is coming." (Matthew 24:40-44;-----) Not knowing the exact time of Jesus? coming to execute God?s vengeance tends to keep us vigilant and gives us daily opportunity to prove that we serve Jehovah with unselfish motives.
Then the context of the illustration:
(Matthew 24:36-47) 36 "Concerning that day and hour (Jesus? coming to execute God?s vengeance) nobody knows, ------------------42 Keep on the watch, therefore, because YOU do not know on what day YOUR Lord is coming.(Jesus? coming to execute God?s vengeance) -----------------------44 On this account YOU too prove yourselves ready, because at an hour that YOU do not think to be it, the Son of man is coming. (Jesus? coming to execute God?s vengeance) 45 "Who really is the faithful and discreet slave whom his master appointed over his domestics, to give them their food at the proper time? 46 Happy is that slave if his master on arriving finds him doing so. 47 Truly I say to YOU, He will appoint him over all his belongings.
How can verse 46 step out of the context & apply to 1914 / 1919If this has been covered somewhere else, please accept my apologies.
ladies and gents, how are you all?
great...now thats out of the way, i need you guys to do me a favour, i have been reading up on jws for the past three/four years, the people are pleasent enough and live fairly ordinary lives....some could say boring....(lets call up susie for a game of cards!!!!!
i come here with a problem....my problem is simple and clear cut, it could even be summed up in one word..."hope".
Others have said it much better than I can. I'll just mention that COC did it for me after 40 yrs. Also the unloving attitude in spite of preaching love.

I've noted that some see problems in the Society but fall back on the reasoning that the organization/community of JWs closely resembles the early Christian community. I was wondering if anyone has read this book and whether or not it gives insights on the validity of this assertion.
Just received the book in the mail. Looking forward to seeing if it sheds any significant light on the question under discussion. It certainly would seem scriptural to accept some degree of organization in the 1st century, but not to the extent that a few men would be 'masters over our faith'. It is almost laughable how we are told 'not to go beyond the things that are written' then procede directly to do just that. I guess Paul meant 'written in the WT'.
