WHY are you here ? (on the board)

ok ... to me it's not totally related to jw life actually, i'm here because i'm used now to chat with people (you know like you go into a cafe and share wathever you want with whoever as this board is very rich and full for immediat interaction), support them, get some support ... i just like that ... also of course it's very interesting at the same time to follow some news and get information that i might spit back to my familly in time to wake them up .... what about you ?

i came to find out what an 'apostate' was! well i'd had the jw point of view but i thought 'is this really so'?! so decided to check it out.

i love the topics of discussion on the board, not just about religion, but all sorts of things. i like the way i can ask a question or ask for help and always get it. that is so fabulous in itself. my computor skills arent up to much, but in the space of a week they are vastly improved.

i was studying with the jws for 18months and recently that study stopped. now heres a twist.........some of the things ive seen on here have actually convinced me the jws must be right, at least in their interpretation of the bible. and some of the people who have convinced me the most have been the ones that are against the jws, the org and their theories.

however, many of the things ive seen have made me nervous of the organisation.

apart from that, love my time here on the board and looking forward to being Senior member!

I know just about every verse to every christmas carol. one that i still have stuck in my head and i sing all the time, isnt a christmas carol, its a church song.

'oh oh oh oh oh, heaven is in my heart.........'. its not actually true, heaven isnt in my heart! but the song is stuck in my head.

Sick Nostalgia...

lately i've been feeling overwhelming nostalgia for my time as a jw.

i know it's foolish and stupid, but it keeps happening.

today i was at starbucks and i saw a family come in after meeting.

hey you arent loosing it. i was really really upset about something recently. was on my hands and knees scrubbing the kitchen floor singing, 'jesus loves me this i know, cus the bible tells me so, little ones to him belong, jesus loves me this i know'. was full of self pity at the time and it made me feel suitably consoled, even though i was taught that song as a child at church, and have awful memories of being scared by some of the doctrine.

which proves that even in the midst of a bad experience, theres sometimes something good to remember

The King James Version is Perfect

i don't know about anybody else,but i love the beautiful king james version.it contains no error and is perfect.there are no mistranslations in it,and none can be proven.i don't read or study anything else for spirituality.im like a tree that is planted by the water,i shall not be moved,amen,amen,hallelujah,praise jesus!!!!

not so sure i agree with that. i dont think you can have a perfect translation from one language to another. sometimes there is no direct translation - no words that match to translate it over into a different language, so we use the 'next best thing' or 'the nearest we can get'. that is where room for error appears.

i find the king james quite difficult to read. maybe bec English is my second language, and its hard going in its Old English format. i have to ask friends what many of the words mean.

my name is jaron, 19 years old, i'm from the netherlands, and in about a month i am going to start joining the jw's meetings and i'm kind of looking forward to become a jw.

i can of course tell ya'll my entire spiritual story, but that would take an entire bookwork.

in a nuttshell: my father is an ex-jw, my half-sis (from an earlier marriage from my dads) is one of those "special pioneers", and i am jewish (my mom is jewish).

maybe friend, you could try taking your own advice, you know, practice what you preach!! so friend, why are YOU here??

WELCOME TO YOU

You will get lots of advice, mine is just to look at things from all perspectives. if you were getting into any religion, it would be wise to look at the background, the pros and cons etc. you need to ask questions to avoid being brainwashed. at least when you are fully informed you can make a choice that suits you.

Anyone vegetarian and why??????????

i'm not vegetarian.

being italian and brought up on the mediterranian diet i tend to eat a lot of fruit, vegetables, cheese, pasta, rice and some meat.. i'm just curious to know who here is vegeterian and why?????.

im a vegetarian. i dont like the tast of meat anymore but i became a veggie because of modern farming methods. i dont like the way we treat our animals - not particularly against killing them for food, but ive seen and heard some pretty horrific things. i used to work near a turkey farm for a short while. they used to pack the turkeys up ready to send of for slaughter. they would pack them live into little boxes, bending their heads down to shove as many in as possible. it made me ill to watch it. it was that and things like that, that stopped me eating meat.

i also buy my eggs from a farm where i can see the chickens running about. it costs a bit more but at least i know im not contributing battery farming of chickens.

yes, the scripture says that they will be "killed" but not thrown into the lake of fire.

but what about the scripture at revelation 17:8?

thank you for your thoughts. im not offended. your post wasnt in any way offensive. as they say, 'its not what you say but the way you say it' and you said it fine - pity friend in need isnt less aggressive.

i understand what you are saying. you may think i was aggressive when i approached the woman i study with. i wasnt. although i did ask her a lot of questions which threw her as the week before id been really keen - so i can see why she was so ataken back. but she decided not to study with me. she decided i had 'too many questions and studying would be a waste of time at the current time'. she did say that if i found all my answers i could get back in touch. and she has since emailed me a couple of times to ask how im getting on. im sure if i asked i could go back to study with her, but that would be awkward. i would still have the desire to ask all these questions and she would tell me again i wasnt ready to study. i just expressed a lot of doubt and as id been studying for so long, i dont think she quite knew how to handle it.

i am a wee bit puzzled though. if you have left yourself, why would you encourage me to go back to a study? you obviously still believe but dont feel the need to be active. cant i just do the same? I was just pondering this last night actually, before I read your post this morning. I do believe what they taught me. it makes more sense than anything i have heard in church (if youve read some of my other stuff you will know i left the church bec i couldnt accept their concept of hell). i also dont buy into this 'believe in jesus and you are saved from your sins' stuff, especially by those who then continue to live exactly how they want, thinking they are saved anyway. dont get me wrong, i know many born again christians who daily exercise their faith and would put me to shame. even though i dont understand how they can reconcile themselves to some of the most unscriptural teachings of the church. but thats another subject.............

if i now believe what the jws believe (and assuming they are right about the bible) but just choose not to get involved in the organisation, am i saved? big question. but handy to ask it of someone who still believes their teachings but has withdrawn from involvement of the org.

interesting! defintely food for thought.....thank you for that article.......ive always doubted this part, that those around in the last days, if they werent jws, would die at armageddon and not be resurrected. unlike those who died before who would have a chance. didnt seem fair somehow.

Going to my first meeting this morning

hi there i'm new here, my name is fiona i am not yet a jw and have not started to study yet.

i am very interested in doing so but since i am still new to all this i thought i should attend some meetings first.

i am going to my first one today at the kelvin hall in glasgow, i am quite nervous as i do not know what to expect but also excited at the same time since it could be the beginning of a huge change in my life.

i think if you look through many of the posts you will find you are just advised to do lots of research. at least that way if you make a choice to become a jw, you can say you looked at it from all angles. we dont know anything about you, so no one would assume you would convert after just one meeting - youd have to wait for months of study anyway before you could be baptised.

many people on here have had negative experiences, so thats what you hear. if i was registered on a board for ex members of the pentecostal church, you would probably hear lots of criticism for me.

people are just looking out for you. most people arent telling you not to do it. just step wisely and slowly, thats all.

i hope you stick around and take a look at what everyone has to say. It has certainly enlightened me. before you do anything you need to look at things from ALL perspectives. I believe that only when youve done that are you able to make a sound choice for yourself.
