  I saw the movie United 93

  as i mentioned in an earlier post, i went to see the movie united 93 with a group of friends who were with me at the wtc on 9/11.. first, i encourage all of you who feel that you are ready to see this reenactment as a movie, to see it.

  because it is on a wide screen and most of the film takes place in the traffic controller's offices and the inside of the plane, you get the feeling of actually being part of the action.. the film tells the story of how the traffic controllers, military, and the passengers of the plane realized that what started out as a few planes missing from radar turned into a delibrate terrorist attack on our government.. filmed in what seemed to be almost real time you see how people went from bewilderment, panic to resolve and of course eventually the actual tradgey.. it is quite heartwenching watching the passengers realize that they were going to die, and how many of them communicated with their loved ones, leaving them with messages of love and resolve.. i hope i haven't given too much away.. it really makes you realize that an unforeseen occurrence can alter your life forever.

  I saw it the day it opened.

  It was obviously designed to make you feel as if you are THERE. It ends looking out the cockpit as they struggle for control of the plane. The ground comes up and then at the moment of impact goes to black. You die with them.

  There has been much talk about this movie being propaganda or speculation or even exploitation.

  I don't think it was. If anything it was completely devoid of commentary.

  Obviously there was some speculation as to the events on the plane in those final minutes. All the info we have (unless you are convinced that everything the "government" tells us is a lie) was from phone conversations with those on the ground and the data from the inflight recorder. All depictions of the individuals were made based on extensive research on these folks with input from their families (probably not the families of the terrorists).

  As far as I know, everything that was depicted was tied to some information. Any events that were speculated on appeared to me to be completely plausible and even likely. Ultimately it was a "best guess" as to what really happened. But anyone who would complain about it would have to provide a better explanation based on some verifiable fact. Quite a challenge indeed.

  And ulitmately what does it matter. The plane went down before it hit the capitol building. Unless you are convinced that the plane was shot down by the "government", you have to acknowledge that however successful they were, these folks are the reason why.

  I'm not sure what happened after that, but the elders were pissed off that she had "brought reproach upon Jehovah's name" by exposing their dirty little secrets. Assholes.

  So let me get this straight. You are saying that elders would rather let someone be abused then to damage the jw reputation by reporting the abuse to authorities.

  This isn't written anywhere obviously.

  How many elders act this way? What percentage would not report the abuse?

  I know this is speculation, but how do so many get the message not to report abuse? I know, unwritten rules and all.

  Like others here, I am inclined not to use the behavior of a single person as a way to discredit an entire group. I have to think any JW I have ever met or known would be completely disgusted by this.

  On the other hand, some of these children were in there teens! Didn't ANYBODY notice all the bruises? The attitudes that would have to be in place to support this level of cruelty surely manifested themselves in other ways for all to see?

  I have a question. If an elder became aware of physical abuse in a home, would it EVER lead to a call to the authorities?

  What kind of safety precautions do dubs take for field service?

  if a jw enters a home for the first time, what kind of safety precautions are taken by the car group to ensure the safety of the jw?.

  for instance i was shocked to find out my jw wife wasn't instructed by the elders as to which homes belonged to registered sex offenders.

  I wonder what kind of support I would get from her real "husband".

  I mean seriously. Say she is out with 3 Sister Super Pioneer's and one of them says "let's do door to door so you can work on that presentation". Like she is really going to say, "No, I can't. My unbelieving husband has forbidden me to do door to door work with my toddler"

  yeah right

  I might get her to agree not to go into houses she doesn't know.

  In one instance my wife told me that she and my daughter entered the home of this "crazy catholic" guy. His wife was home so they went in to talk to him. They were there for 1/2 hour.

  After they left, the lone male in the car group told her, "I was getting worried about you, if you were in there another five minutes I was goin in!"

  Keep in mind, this guy is a total raised-a-dub candy ass. My daughter could probably whip this guys ass.

  I started to realize just how daft, careless, and irresponsible those making my wife (my young children with her) go out in service. From the gb down to the boe. MORONS!!!

  I wonder what kind of safety precautions I could get her to make... at the very friggin least when she is draggin my kids around!

  Would it be to much to ask for her NOT to take them to a new door? Or leave them in the car when she works a new door? I mean seriously!

  I have thought of bringing it up to her, but I figure she would just figure I was persecuting her. What do you guys think?

  Are jw's expected to go to EVERY door?

  For instance, say there is a bunch of empty crack vials on the lawn, maybe a Nazi flag. Is the jw actually expected to knock on that door?

  What if you are in a bad, unfamiliar neighborhood. Are jw's actually expected to approach all these doors with their children?

  Please tell me it wasn't due to a loss of blood!!!

  A 3/4" electrical cord? I couldn't see that breaking bones or causing organ damage?

  It's times like these when I question the founder's wisdom in putting that whole bit about "no cruel and unusual punishment" in the Constitution.

  It is hard to imagine something cruel and unusual enough for these people.

  ESSENTIAL READING - Steven Hassan "Combating Cult Mind Control"

  i have done a lot of reading on the internet about mind control, which often summarised hassan's book, but nothing came close to how interesting his book is.

  i was taking notes until i realised that every page said something that applied to the watchtower society.

  what makes the book effective is that hassan was a moonie, so it does not seem to be an attack on the wts, so can be read by a jw without being offensive to them.. even if you are no longer a jw this is essential reading to help you get over the experience.

  not a suicide cult

  Well I don't know if I agree with you entirely there. The purpose of human sacrifice is that it is the ultimate expression of faith in a life beyond this one. I think that is the psychology and appeal to human sacrifice of all forms throughout all history.

  The simple fact is that the scriptural basis for refusal of blood in life threatening situations is extremely weak when subjected to any analysis beyond superficial.

  So what then makes this such a strong appeal, if the intellectual basis for it is so weak. I would submit that the appeal then is the same as for all human sacrifice, and therefore the jw are in fact a suicide cult.

  They just don't do it all flashy like Jonestown.

  I know onesong. I am always aware of OTHERS reading our threads and comments. I don't want anybody to labor under false ideas such as the suggestion that influence is inescapable and therefore we shouldn't worry about it.
