Does Someone's Religion Matter To You?
by minimus indo you care if tom cruise is a scientologist?
or that mitt romney is a mormon?
or that a person is either a very devout muslim or a card carrying communist?

Only as far as it effects the freedoms and rights of others. I can appreciate religious diversity and am fascinated by other theologies, but can't wrap my brain around people who feel compelled to hurt or kill others in the name of their god, or those than impose their consciences on others.

Did this line of thought ever cross your mind?
by Awakened07 inok - first i should mention that this line of *hypothetical* thought may seem extreme, and it's obviously exaggerated to get a point across.
but it's just one of many, many logical constructs i had in my mind, even when i was still active:.
let's say we have a pioneer sister.

It really does show how twisted the theology is. I've heard many stories on here that directly result from this line of reasoning. "Faithful" JWs telling their family "I wished you had died in a car accident rather than leave Jehovah", and I think I remember someone being told by a close family member it would be better if they killed their own children so then at least they could be resurrected. Sick, disturbed and disgusting without doubt, but they set you up for this mentality with their legalistic views and loopholes.
Great post!

This is a sad thing, and a relief no one was hurt.
The irony for me though, is that I can see my family reading this article and being more disturbed by the fact they keep calling the Kingdom Hall a "Church".

Accepting Destruction To Obtain Life
by choosing life inone of the major premises of most religions is to accept that some must be destroyed in order for others to obtain everlasting life.
of course, there are many platitudes that a person relies on to soothe the conscience and sanitize the mind.. the ones to be destroyed deserve it.
they refuse to do something, worship god, beg for forgiveness, live a clean life, whatever.they are selfish and nobody can change them but themselves.. but underneath the smug acceptance of salvation, while the others suffer destruction is probably the most selfish concept of all.

She sounds a little scary. Have you spoken to the manager/owner of your complex about her? I would wonder what their policy is on tenants harrassing others.
This is a little tounge in cheek, but have you ever thought of turning the tables on her and get *her* to stay away? Call her at all hours of the night to tell her stories of your childhood, knock on the door constantly to borrow things you don't give back. Ask for money. Ask her embarrassing personal questions in a loud voice in front of others. Pretty soon maybe she'll move.

JEALOUSY! Have you ever suffered from it?
by nicolaou indid you ever have a partner who sucked the joy out of your relationship because of their jealousy?
have you ever felt jealous?
surely we can all feel jealousy, it's just that the triggers are set differently for everyone.. i'll admit to having been jealous at times, my own insecurities got the better of me, but jealousy is truly corrosive and anyone who intentionally sets out to make their partner feel jealous needs a good smack on the bum!.

Not really, but I've been on the opposite side of the spectrum. So completely devoid of jealousy and common sense that I became a trusting idiot who let myself be taken advantage of by the man I married. He was stepping out with co-workers... I didn't find out until after I left him.... for other reasons. The signs were all there too. Don't know how I missed them.

Holy cow! I would have never thought Witnesses could have "get-togethers" with dancing! I went to three different halls (a couple others before I was old enought to remember) and we never had anything like that. We had a summer picnic that got nixed after a few years because the Society came out with an article encouraging smaller groups, graduation & anniversary parties, and going away parties. It mostly consisted of eating, maybe some Rummikube, piano playing and singing, and probably my Dad subjecting everyone to his latest slides. Exciting stuff.

in the beginning... When did you realise it was the truth ?
by AlphaOmega insorry to do this... and apologies to minimus for pinching his posting style .
a jw friend of mine was speaking about the moment that witnesses "realise that it's the truth".
they didn't say anymore... so i guess that they feel there is a pattern ??.

I was raised in it... so it was a gradual brainwashing for me.
It always strikes me when the term "The Truth" is used though. It's almost creepy how it's used as a proper name for the religion. My Mom has been out and DFd for over 20 years and still refers to it as "The Truth". This term is almost like a secret handshake I think.
