The Watch Tower Society has been pounding the "deliverance-at-hand" drum since 1880.
(an olde threade possibly of interest to "newbies": continually-pounding-deliverance-hand-drum )
the last time i spoke to my mother, who is a devout jw, she threatened me with typical jw scare tactics telling me how oh so close the end is and how me and my 2 young daughters will be slaughtered by god himself in armageddon.
knowing that this is just a scare tactic, i respectfully listened, then replied that the jw's have wrongfully predicted the end of the world three times and were incorrect, 1914, 1925, 1975. i asked doesn't that make them false prophets?
her response; " no, because the brothers are imperfect and jehovah knew their heart was in a sincere place.

any elder has never asked me that question so far but i want to be prepared to answer that question if any of them ask me that question in the future.
i hope that they will never ask me that question.
any suggestions on how to answer that question would be very much appreciated.
Shortly after I ceased attendance, one of the elders addressing my reservations regarding the Watch Tower Society stated that if I doubted that the Society is who they claim to be, he was certain I would "write a letter" [disassociating myself]. I didn't respond and the matter was dropped. At another interrogation with that Elder and another, the second Elder asked: "But you still believe that the Society is God's Organisation, right?" I told them that my research into the Society's history raised grave doubts and that it devolved on them to address my concerns. They did not do so, of course. But they also did not disfellowship me. That was in 2006.
just been reading this week's study article for the jws:.
imagine that an experienced guide is leading you on a tour of a wondrous and beautiful city.
the city is new to you and to those with you, so you hang on to the guide’s every word.
Would the premature ideas and eager questions of the tourists cast doubt on the reliability of their guide?
Well, since they got their premature ideas from their guide (the Watch Tower Society -- clearly not the Holy Spirit)... YES. It proves the guide to be UNRELIABLE.

IMAGINE that a mentally-diseased would-be guide on LSD is leading you on a tour of a wondrous and beautiful city. The city is new to you and to those with you, so you attempt to interpret the guide’s every incoherent word. At times, you and your fellow tourists wonder excitedly about some of the city’s features that you have not yet seen. When you ask your guide about such things, however, he simply guesses, because he has no idea what he is talking about. In time, you grow ever more disgusted with his incompetence, for he is proves himself an addled-brained twit.

Do mistaken ideas [promulgated as divinely-revealed truth] cast doubt on whether Jesus was guiding those faithful ones by means of holy spirit?
Why, yes; yes, it does!!! And when you find out that the Society has lied about their past...
if you look at the cover of the original 'the watch tower' it says;.
the watch tower .
and herald of christ's presence.

That shitebag had been teaching that Jesus was already invisibly there for over 35 years and now he's going to.... what??? ....teach something new??? What?? Jesus came last night??? Holy cow... and now we see it was an invisible coming... STOP THE PRESSES"
The announcement made on 02. October 1914 was that the Gentile Times had ended. They were not told that the invisible presence had begun the previous evening.

You appear to be confused. CTR claimed since 1876 that the invisible parousia had begun Oktober 1874.
CTR made the claim on 02. Oktober that the Gentile Times had ended. (Yeah; he was still wrong...)
i am just about finished 'out of the cocoon' (great book) and am looking for ex jw books to read.. so far i have read:.
crisis of conscience (brilliant/amazing).
in search of christian freedom (interesting).

Very little commentary; the book is chiefly quotes from Watch Tower literature, arranged in (largely) chronological order (from 1870's forward). By the time you get to the 1940's, you will be tired of hearing how 'Armageddon is at hand!!! The time is short!!! Don't buy green bananas!!!'.
...it looks like a generic, easy to sell barn hall.. https://youtu.be/eqwrfhbbqwy.
nothing like the old hall it's built next to.. the small room in the video is the indoctrination education center.. the building is completed one year ahead of schedule.
my guess: it's either much simpler than they originally planned, and/or they had more volunteers because nothing else is being built.. video is dutch, but nothing interesting is said anyway..
Bedankt.
playing devil's advocate here.... what's the difference between the gb changing bible interpretations compared to parliaments all over the world changing laws?
although the us constitution (=bible) remains untouched, congress passes i don't know how many new laws every year.
and of course people are expected to follow them.
From the "Faithful and Wise Servant":
All truth is in harmony, whether old or new. What was true at any time in the past must be true yet.... and if it is not true now, instead of being advanced light then it was terrible darkness. [...] We have sometimes been accused by unbelievers for teaching that the true way to advance was to displace the truth we learned yesterday by new truth learned today; but we utterly repudiate the absurd charge. To grow in knowledge is to retain the truth we have and add to our stock.
(Zion’s Watch Tower July 1880 WTR p. 119)
If we were following a man undoubtedly it would be different with us; undoubtedly one human idea would contradict another and that which was light one or two or six years ago would be regarded as darkness now: But with God there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and so it is with truth; any knowledge or light coming from God must be like its author. A new view of truth never can contradict a former truth. "New light" never extinguishes older "light," but adds to it. If you were lighting up a building containing seven gas jets you would not extinguish one every time you lighted another, but would add one light to another and they would be in harmony and thus give increase of light: So is it with the light of truth; the true increase is by adding to, not by substituting one for another.
(Zion's Watch Tower February 1881 WTR p. 188)
....it would not be scared of critics.
actually they would naturally take an offensive stance, wouldn't they?
they would welcome debate... even encourage it.
"We need to examine, not only what we personally
believe, but also what is taught by any religious
organization with which we may be associated. Are its
teachings in full harmony with God’s Word, or are they
based on the traditions of men? If we are lovers of the
truth, there is nothing to fear from such an examination."
